  1. Interesting.... I had something that looked similar when using a metallic grey color (Duplicolor). but I noticed mine when I sprayed the 3rd coat. Some other "odd" things happened with one of the cans I used, like a slightly different color. with less or no "flake" to it. There was something odd about that can of paint! It also appeared to be used when I opened it!

    Did you use rattle cans?

  2. I'm about to do some masking on my body... guitar body... and have doing some research via the "search function"... 3M blue and/ or green masking tape has been mentioned a few times and seems like a clear choice. I also did a search on contact paper and it seems that it can be used to do masking. Using the clear seems like it would have some advantages, but a I have a few questions:

    - Has anyone on here tried it? If so, would it be recomended?

    - How "sticky" is the adhesive, will it pull off paint? I would be putting it over Duplicolor Metalcast (enamel?). I would guess that the longer it is on the greater the chance of it pulling the pain off. "Guess" being the key word.

    - Would it be easier to use the 3M tapes mentioned above?

    - I've also seen "pinstripe tape" at a local autoparts store, but it appears to be pretty permanent. I don't remember any brand names.

In my case I'm going to mask off most of the body in order to paint bevelled edges. I will probably cover most of the body with "kraft wrap" (brown paper used in our shipping dept.) and "seal" the edges.

  3. I saw contact paper that looked like brushed metal at a crafts store this weekend and debated lining my similar shaped guitar (Kraner Vangaurd) with it... and possibly painting over it with Duplicolor Metalcast paint.

There are others on the site.

I have no idea how well it would work, but after looking at it again, I"m thinking about trying it!

  4. No, you're right. I am very interested in how he did this, but it made little sense, to me. I understand he painted the guitar, green, first. I THINK he dabbled the black paint on, with the t-shirt, but what's up with the SOCK? I mean, it DOES look like an interesting finish, in fact, one that I had in mind, and was wondering how to DO it, but I think it would be helpful if he took a few seconds, and elaborated. And I agree that it would look better if there was an edge burst. Either THAT, or a faux binding, with the rest of the guitar in black, maybe. Just my 2 cents.

I think it's the texture of a sock turned inside the shirt, lightly dipped in black paint and dabbed on. Just a guess.

  5. I started over.... not because of the stain on the black paint, but because of a more "obvious" problem.

I filled the grain with epoxy and discovered the stain doesn't like epoxy.

I already knew that... or thought I did... but I thought it would be fun.

    It was! :D

but there were places I sanded through to the wood others that I didn't... it looked odd.. not odd in a good way though :D

BUT I finally got to mix acetone and black (minwax) stain with epoxy... I liked the extended drying time and runniness (runny-ness - yeah, I'm making up words)... it was much easier to work with. B)

The stain wiped off of the black paint by the way

Why am I typing all of this?

    Just because.

  6. You can also thin those 2-part epoxies with Acetone to get the consistency a bit more runny so it sinks into the smaller pores, but the more Acetone you add, the longer the cure time, so there is a 'bridgepoint' of Acetone to curing time that you don't want to cross, if you know what I mean. 50/50 is MAX, and I wouldn't recommend even getting that close, but it does help, as those 2-parters are a bit thick. Just a dropperful or two thins it out quite well, and doesn't impede the cure too much.

Mix your 2 parts together well, then mix in the Acetone.

I've also read (some wher on this forum) about adding (Testors?) paint to the mixture above... I've gotta say, I'm excited to try it!

I recently filled my 1st body using epoxy (5 min) and it was a mess! It got sticky a little faster than I would have liked, it was pretty bumpy. I should have focused on smaller areas while doing it

  7. Hello...

I'm working on my first refinishing project and have learned a few "what not to do's" :D

What not to do: Mask the guitar, leaving the bevel (edges) , that will be painted black, before painting (or staining) a lighter base coat. Yep, I did it. I knew it was dumb move, yet I continued "forward". :smart: :D

I should have: Stained the body then masked and painted the bevels. At least that's what "I" think I should have done... and will do next time

Before I learn another one, I'd like to see what you guys think...

The guitar I'm doing is a Kramer Vangaurd (Rhodes V), I've painted the edges black... using acrylic lacquer... but want to stain the front/ inside using a Minwax water based stain. Should I remask OVER the black (to preserve the color) or will the stain wipe off of the acrylic lacquer?

I'm not trying to lazy as much as avoid doing something that isn't really needed... sort of like when I sanded my body really smooth and then applied epoxy as a filler... that's a whole 'nother story though B)

and yes, I've read the tutorials, and millions of threads..

  8. My sealer of choice: Shellac (dewaxed, natch; if you must buy instead of mix your own, Bullseye Seal Coat is the thing you want).

    The End.

    Bullseye Seal coat - NOTED!

McFaddens Vinyl sealer - Also noted!

    Thanks guys.

Maiden - you guitar (in the link post above) come out really nice!

  9. Usualy I say keep searching but here you go.

Check this thread out, most of your answers are there. Also here is a link to the 1st body I made, you might find some info there

Thanks. I've read the first one, but don't recall seeing an explaination of "what sealer is"

I'll check out the 2nd one right now. :D

Oh... I read that a thinned down clear coat can be used as a sealer. Good info?

  10. Hello all!

I've been reading the forum for a few weeks now, and have finally started my first "refinishing" project... and of course question, questions, and more questions.

    The first one:

What is "sanding sealer"? I went to a hardware store and asked for it... they gave me dark grey primer!

I am working with an ash body and would like to do a transparent finish. I'm going to run over to our local Homedepot and buy some epoxy to fill in the grain (hopes for black to be in stock), does anyone has a recommendation for clear sealer that I can buy at Homedepot?

    There will be more...

    p.s. I've searched - really.

    edit 5 minutes later:

    Well, look what I found!!!

I still need info (hand holding?) :D
