  1. Great work! it's a nice blend of old-school and modern stuff. I like the way you carved the lower and upper horn, it's give to the shape a sculptural look a la art nouveau. Philippe
  2. It's a hand-rubbed paste varnish made by Circa 1850. It's made in canada so i dot know if it's available in Usa. It's a blend of tung oil and urethane. It's seem to resist well and i hope it will pass the test of time. I realy like the result on mahogany. And this is not my last projet in mahogany. It's realy easy to work with this wood. Thank for your comment Jon! Philippe Trépanier
  3. i finaly bought my digital camera. The jazz is my first project (where all began). I took the neck from a MIM jazz and built a replica from soft maple. Stock hardware with DiMarzio pick-up and brass nut. Sound realy punchy and great hi-end for slapping. My second project is the fretless one. Made from african mahogany. The neck is made out of mahogany/hardmaple/purpleheart. I made the bridge, the pick-up cover and the knob from a rosewood piece. This is a deep sounding fretless with a great woody tone. The last one is my "growler" Single EMG Hz pick-up, gotoh keys, schaller bridge, corian nut, passive electronic, white ash body (swap ash is n/a in quebec) hard maple neck w/ purple strigner. I love this bass a lot, it have great low-mid with crisp high sound. more pics to come Philippe For the complete line-up: My Webpage
  4. Mattia: .012 of positive relief. I like the rosewood smell but it's pretty hard to sand. But i think that is the way to go! I want a relief between .030/.040" to lowered the action. Thanks for your advice guys! This forum is realy useful for a hobbyist like me. Philippe
  5. This is my first topics in this forum so i will introduce myself. My name is Philippe and i'm from quebec, canada. I play basse for over 18years and i'm a modelmaker for aerospace industry. I built my first complete basse in april '06. This is a bolt-on 4strings/fretless/mahogany. Here is the problem; i built a 5pcs mahogany neck with a .300" purpleheart centre piece surounded by 2 .100" strip of maple. The truss rod is a martin type with the aluminium channel. The neck is realy stiff, even with the string tension. When i use my string as a straight-edge, there is a .012" gap in the centre of my neck and the trussrod nut is loose. I want a little more bow to prevent string buzz. My neck profile is much more like a warwick than a jazzbass. I like that chunky feel, but will i have a better neck movement if i reshape it much thinner? thanks Philippe
