  1. Awesome, I love teardrops... well all italian guitars!

The solid block should mean you get almost no feedback, but I imagine the f hole will weaken its resistance a lot.

As it said in the PDF those plugs work by sealing the body from the outside air, which foam doesn't do.

I can't wait to see more progress. Have you decided on a colour?

  2. I've been far to busy lately!

Here's the pickguards cut to shape, Im going to redo the mandolin side as it wasn't quite right.

At this point Im think I will leave the wood natural. Would tru oil do the trick? This is my first build, my finishing knowledge is limited.

Im still thinking about reducing the size of the mandolin headstock, for practical reasons as much as aesthetic.

  3. Slow progress if anyone's interested.

Cavities and 1/2 inch round over routed. Finished the scroll, I cut it down quite a lot, but im pleased with the overall shape.

Heres an idea of what the pickguard will look like.

I like the shape ! About the pickguard, I can´t see well if it´s one pickguard for all the pickups or a pickguard in two parts.

Thanks for the comments guys! I should get a lot more done next week.

It is a pickguard in two parts; the mandolin side has only its pickup. I drilled a tunnel between that and the guitar neck pickup, I'll just need some long wire to get it down to the controls!

I think I like the thin curl of the pickguard on the scroll, but it will probably be difficult to cut so thin. What im not sure about shape wise is the right hand side of the mando pickgaurd. Any thoughts?

  4. Right now i have a tortoise shell pickguard, but i doubt that will match the black pickups, or with these knobs http://www.axesrus.com/axeknobs_files/SGKNOBS.jpg (black :D

I'll probably get some black pickgaurd material. Im using strat electronics as though the middle pickup has been used as the mandolin. this keeps it simple but if i dont like it once its done i might change it.

Im really deciding all this as i go along! ill probably stain it yellowish/orangish but keeping the grain showing through.

  5. So its been two years since the initial design stage. I finally settled on an original shape.

Its a bit of a mix of parts, in term of cost you might say!

    Anyway here are some pics.

    HPIM3030.jpg

The Body is three piece swamp ash.

Neck is an old squier strat neck (if the guitar turns out good i might buy a fender neck ok!)

Mandolin neck was made for me by 'Jupiter Creek Music' in South Australia. Its Australian oak with a jarrah fretboard shaped like the fender 12s.

Guitar pickups will be these http://cachepe.zzounds.com/media/quality,8...2e40fbb5bd2.jpg

Mandolin pickup is a hand wound single coil (ill find the website if anyone wants it)

Here is an idea of the detail in pencil. any ideas how i can cut that thin scroll out?!

  6. wow. i never would've thought they were that useless.

    thanks for the help anyway.

Im working on a Mandolin Guitar doubleneck.

Im gonna take strat electronics and put the neck pickup on the mandolin and the middle shall become the neck for the guitar.

So in this way the strat tone setup may become handy!

  7. the top is neck tone, and the bottom is middle tone. if you have bridge and middle selected, the middle tone will also affect the bridge, and for neck and middle, which ever one is lower will be the tone control.

right ok... not quite as simple as i hoped!

so what if just the bridge is selected?

  8. does the bass have Preamps inside it ?

it sounds like the electronics are getting hot and then starting to sound a bit crap, i cant be sure though just a guess.

it could be the other active electronics if they are getting too hot.

im not sure about a preamp but the EQ controls have a sticky settling point which is full output, more than that and its adding to the signal, less and its just like a normal passive control.

it is like spaghetti in there... might be getting hot that way.

  9. Hi there i recently bought a 'vintage (thats the make) v940 fretless active bass'

now when this bass works it sounds amazing. but after about 10 mins of playing i get this really loud crackling popping sound which comes and goes. it sounds sort of digital to me (although im not very knowledgeable with electronics) because the sound is very random and not constant.

its there even when the volume pot is all the way off.

ive tried the bass with many different leads and amps so im sure its the bass.

it has 1 volume, 1 bass 1 treble active EQ, and 1 active blend (sort of a fader between the p-bass pickup and the jazz pickup.

also when i opened the back up i found there was no sheilding foil, although the cavity is coated in this heavy black paint.?

i hope i have explained whats happening clear enough. any help or hints in the right direction would be great.

i got this bass for a about £140 second hand so i dont really want to spend £50+ on brand new electronics!

    thanks

  10. beatiful work.

that f hole is damn sexy.

one thing, im not too kean on the arrangement of your switches and knobs.

maybe if you put the pots on a curve from the bridge pickup something like a strat

and moved the top line of switches down, it looks like those might get in the way of your hand.

    just an idea.
