are you going to be posting a layout of the circuit you've created? I've been awaiting one, putting off building a fetzer/ruby because I assume your circuit is better, or is there already one somewhere that i missed somehow?

I was waiting for someone to ask me this...Unfortunately...NO. (I am even exploring ways to encapsulate the circuit so as to prevent it being ripped off and copied, and deliberately obscuring components, etc. I have even got a couple of false traces on the proposed PCB for this purpose and possible tweaking if there are problems after PCB manufacture.

If I am to succeed in making this available and at a reasonable cost, some things, like the coil machine, will have to be kept secret. I have no doubts that the availability of the coil will inspire more knowledgeable people to develop their own designs and post them....so development will continue in an "open source" kind of way as exemplified by this thread.

I have thought about this, and have an alternate design, without the limiting and drive function of my circuit that is likely to be simple, yet an improvement on the fetzer/ruby. The basic ideas were tested and so could be mocked up for the public. This could also be a side project, since I am buying parts in bulk, to make a cost effective "kit of parts" for people to DIY this design.

Good point, and I know Col was thinking of doing something similar with opamps as a DIY standard circuit.

Sorry...that is the state of play there... Given the problems and expense many have run into acquiring the components and getting the circuit running, I think the purchase of my pre-made design will be preferable. I am aware that I need to compete commercially, not only with the other makers, but the DIY'ers too.

I totally understand what you mean. I realize how much work you've put into this, and I understand how pissed off I would be if I did all that work then some little punk makes the same circuit and starts selling them under his own name. I guess I'll build the fetzer/ruby, then tweak it myself. An alternative design would probably be cool as well. And I see that the most prominent part of the diy thing would be designing better drivers. If you were gonna have people test them I'd be more than willing to be a beta tester and give a lot of feedback. Also I think a thread is in order for all the layouts and picture of people's new drivers, sustainer guitars, designs, concepts that have been posted all around this thread. They're all really nice and helpful but hard to find. That's all IMO, but I think it'd be useful (or a table of contents).

hey matt, where do you get 8 string parts? i have been wanting to build one, but i cant find any parts.

kahler and hipshot both have 8 string bridges. EMG makes an 8 string pickup.

I made a cigar box guitar not too long ago...But I made mine a little more traditional with toothpick frets and a poplar board.

How do you do toothpick frets? Just stick them on and cover it with a crap-load of varnish?

I've dubbed it the stratocanster, it's basically a little electronic drum. I just took a guitar pickup, mounted it to the inside, ran it to a jack. it's really fun running it through wah and stuff like that. (I also added a tone control to add to the pointlessness of it.

I think he means actually making one. like all the hand made ones on those old silvertone and teisco guitars.

^what do you mean put the switch under a piece of metal? would i wire it normally and do that? what position would the switch have to be in? and what about "relaying", how would i go about doing that?

i saw the idea for this somewhere and it sparked my interest. would it be possible to hook up a small metal plate as a killswitch so when you touched it it would kill the sound? The idea i heard before was to run the ground lug to the plate, so you touching it would ground it, but i heard that would only work if you didn't have shoes on. Does anyone have any ideas how to do this?

hate to say it, but it looks exactly like the wes borland signature guitar to me...

^sorry, i didn't mean to be rude. but the way i'm setting up the talkbox is that i have a modified combo amp which speaker wires run to a jack instead of the speaker. i'm running a cable from that to the input jack on the talkbox i'll be building. i know this method works because that's how mine's set up now (it's just a ghetto talkbox built out of a crappy computer speaker). This method is working for me with no problems, i just want a higher quality talkbox to get better sound out of it.

^i know all i need to know about talkboxes, for the last time, all i want to know is if i'm running a horn driver (just like a speaker) to an input jack, would a dpst switch be good for it as an on/off switch?

^the wiring they show in that isn't how i want it. their design has two jacks so it goes inbetween a head and cabinet, or in the effects loop, that isn't what i want. I think the switch i need is a DPST, am I right?

I'm going to be making my own talkbox soon but i need some help. all it's going to be is a horn driver going to an on/off switch going to an input 1/4 jack. three things i need to know are, what kind of switch would i need, how would i wire it, and would the input jack have to be mono or stereo. thanks in advance

hey guys i'm back. i just stripped a single coil and have it blocked and ready to rewind. Probably still gonna use the fetzer/ruby, instead of curtis's new design. I was thinking also, I go on the ultimate-guitar.com forum all the time, and it seems like every day there's three new threads asking about diy sustainers, so i'm thinkin it'd be good to open another sustainer thread over there. what do you think? I feel like I should ask permission since you guys have been working so hard on this thread. Also because if i do I'd want to post some of the pics and schematics you guys have made.

if you don't have controls does that mean it's automatically set to like 10 if it did have the controls?

am i just crazy or does col's fetzer/ruby circuit have no controls? don't you need them?

col, you're my hero. The only thing i was worried about on this project was whether or not I could build this circuit, but now I can see it's not too difficult

I have a guitar with a current setup of h/h, and i have an extra humbucker that I want to wire in the middle of them. The guitar has two humbuckers, a three way toggle switch, and a volume. I just want to wire the new pickup in, not add any more pots. (by the way, all three of the pickups have two leads and a stranded ground). Can anyone help me?

PSW, that "tiny e-bow" is exactly what I've been looking for!!! I know it's probably just as difficult as a sustainer, i would love to experiment with somethings like this, but i have some question. So, I would only need a ruby right? (not a fetzer/ruby), and how far away from the string did you put it to get it to sustain? What guage wire did you use to wrap the little magnet? Would i need the amp controls? How many wraps did it take?
