  1. I made this for a friend on a tight time schedule so the neck isn't mine and a few features were left out due to lack of time (carved top, binding, sound hole, inlay, etc.)

-Curly Maple top, yellow dye (not my choice but I like how it turned out.)

    -Mahogany back

-ES-335 meets Brian May Red Special body

-Set neck (purchased from soulmate guitars. shaped the heel to the body)

    -Hardtail bridge

-1 master volume, 2 pickup volume controls.

    -2 P90s

    -medium frets

    -Pau Ferro fretborad

    -Curly Maple and Mahogany neck

Oh, and the cavity cover in that picture isn't the final one. I redid it with scraps of the same mahogany I built the guitar with so it looks better than what is shown here.

  2. A friend of mine asked (and paid) me to build a guitar for her husband for Christmas. I was way too pressed for time. That's the last time I agree to something requiring a tight deadline.

The design is a mix of a ES-335 and a Brian May Red Special.

    Curly Maple top.

    Mahogany body.

    Pau Ferro fretboard

I bought the neck from http://www.soulmateguitars.com/ since I was pressed for time. Highly recommend them.

  3. About 3 1/5 years ago I started building 2 guitars. I finished one and the other one only got part of the way and its been in a box since. I got it out the other day to see about getting back to work on it and was horrified to discover that the top had warped significantly.

I have some pictures from back when I first started on it and I can post a picture of how it looks now later on tonight.

What I want to know is, can it be salvaged? Will I still be able to do something to straighten it out and laminate it to the top of the body?

By the way, that is leopard wood.

    Thanks for the help.

  4. I built a semi-hallow with P-90s and it sounds great. Great clean tone and a decent distorted (but it wasn't intended for that type of play). I have another one in the works. My P-90s didn't come with mounting screws and it took me forever to find the right sized screws.

  5. Ty Tabor.

Who? Many of you ask. He is the guitarist for King's X. Who? You might ask again. The best band you have never heard of. But ask most of the guitarists listed here (that are still alive) and they will know who he is.

He is an endless supply of guitar riffs and ideas, great song writer and vocalist. Much more well rounded than many of the "shredders". He's heavily influenced by the Beatles, Black Sabath, and Phil Keaggy (to name a few).

He's been with King's X and several earlier itterations of the same group since the early 80's and they are still cranking out tunes. He's also done a couple solo albums and several side projects:
Platypus (John Myung bass for Dreamtheater, Rod Morganstein - drumer for Dixie Dregs, Derek Sherinian - keyboards, used to be with DT)
Jelly Jam (John Myung, Rod Morganstein)
    Jughead (Matt Bisonnette, Derek Sherinian)

I compiled some clips if you want to hear what he sounds like. The clips aren't the greatest since they don't always play the best parts of the songs, at least from a guitarists perspective, but here you go:

    Now, go listen!

  6. kings_x: That is sad to hear dude. That guitar is built VERY well and it is a hard to build guitar in comparison to a simple solidbody. If you did not do that ugly color I would have voted for it immideately. I am sure the color is the reason for your lack of votes. But if your customer wanted it that way you had no choice. Next time enter something in a more pleasing color and I am sure you'll win or at least get many votes....

I am building its sister but I won't be able to work on it much until after the first of the year. Same wood, construction and body shape (although I think I'm going to add binding to the body and maybe fretboard).

But it will be all natural wood grain, leopardwood and mahogany.

But, the guy I built this one for loves the color and loves the way it plays. He likes it better than his PRS. :D

  7. This is a semi-hallow body designed after an ES-335. It is a mahogany neck thru with a maple fretboard. The body has a mahogany core and back and a leopardwood top. Its green because the guy I built it for wanted it that way. I would have preferred a natural finish.

I captured most of the build process here:

    Building the Guitar

Some of those pictures are of an identical guitar I'm working on. The carved top is for the second guitar.

All comments and constructive criticisms are welcome. This is my second guitar but the first time I did my own neck.

  8. I finally installed these pickups in the guitar I built and they sound great. No microphonics or hum and they have a good P-90 sound. For the price, you can't beat them. The only drawbacks, as I said in a previous post, are the lack of installation screws. They don't come with any and the pickup covers are plastic but they look nice.

I'll try posting a sound file sometime soon.

  9. I dug up this old thread to post progress on the semi-hallow I've been building. I've made a few mistakes along the way but have recovered. I strung it up the other day and was pretty stoked. I still need to have the frets leveled but it sounded good.

    http://easypichost.com/Mike/thumbnails

(the first 2 pic are of the first guitar I built. the "carved" top is the top I'll use on my guitar)

I'm building this one for a friend. He wanted it green which I think is a travesty but it is growing on me. And the peghead shape is his design as well, I don't like it. I have the wood and parts for a second version of this guitar that I will start after this one is done. The wood parts are already cut out and ready to glue. Now all I need is time.

  10. I'll try to post a recording of the (almost) all maple guitar I built. Its a Carvin neck-thru with birdseye maple wings and two small strips of mahogany.

The pickups are Schaller Golden 50's. I get a good "classic rock" sound. Sort of a classic Les Paul sound just slightly brighter. With coil splitting, I can get a decent Strat sound as well. It ended up being a pretty versatile guitar.
