  1. Thanks for the advice Quarter, I wasn't sure about the bleach. I think it makes sense to leave some black in the grain as you say, so I will give it a go.
  2. Please can anyone confirm that this is the correct way to go?
  3. I've searched for quite a while now and have answered most of my questions... sorry, being impatient. However, I couldn't find anything specifically on re-dying maple a different colour. I assume I can strip the laquer with paint stripper, and then bleach the maple to get rid of the existing colour, then start the dying process from scratch? Cheers
  4. Sorry to double post, but can anyone offer any advice on how to prepare this top to dye a different colour, or is this generally not the done thing?
  5. Hi all, I am going to re-finish this guitar (probably red) as the finish is starting to yellow and I fancy a change. http://i41.tinypic.com/rbikvr.jpg I've only ever used paint before and was hoping you could give me some advice: 1) What is the best way to remove the laquer and prepare the surface to be dyed? 2) How can I remove the binding? 3) What type of dye should I buy (and can you recommend any good UK stockists)? 4) What kind of clear coat is best? Is there anything I can brush on, or is spray the best? Sorry for all the questions
  6. Thanks for the input, guys. I tried loosening the strings and screws and pushing it back in place and it worked temporarily. I can still move it fairly easily by hand and a couple of the screws just keep turning. I think I will use Swedishluthier's suggestion and fill the holes with dowel and re-drill. Thanks again
  7. Thanks for the responses, guys. Apologies for the lack of details. The neck is a bolt-on and I can actually move it by hand which makes me think the screw holes may be slightly too large. I have loosened and re-tightened before but it keeps happening. Here are some more pics: Full length http://tinypic.com/usermedia.php?uo=4AtXI6...Tt5kIh4l5k2TGxc Bridge http://tinypic.com/usermedia.php?uo=4AtXI6...c2LVIh4l5k2TGxc Gap between neck and body http://tinypic.com/usermedia.php?uo=4AtXI6...%2Fk4h4l5k2TGxc Thanks again for the help!
  8. Hi all, I have had my Palm Bay Cyclone for 10 years now, and decided I need to fix it up and re-finish it. Over the last couple of years the neck seems to have moved and the 6th string often slips off the fretboard. Any ideas how I could fix this?I was thinking I could fill the holes on the neck and re-drill maybe. http://i43.tinypic.com/34ipqpk.jpg It definitely didn't use to be like this! Thanks all
  9. Hi all. I have searched but haven't found the answer. I am completely new to painting and am a bit confused. I have got some Rustins grain filler and was planning to use primer, paint (solid black) and then laquer. What does sanding sealer do and do I need it in this instance? The body is mahogany btw, thanks.
  10. Never mind DJ, like I said, at least I've got some spares. I've got more ideas on the back burners. Thanks for the input Thanks Prostheta, I've ordered these now, but I'll be sure to try Chris out in my future builds. Thanks again guys
  11. Thanks for all the help guys, bought them from guitarheads. Shame I had to buy 2 sets cos I'm building a 7 string. Oh well, at least I'll have some spares.
  12. Thanks for that info, I thought that smaller ones were best for the top. I have just looked at Stewmac and they won't ship ferrules to the UK because they're Non-RoHS Compliant (Whatever that means!). Does anyone know were I can get them in the UK, because I've searched and I can only find the larger ones for the back of the gitar. Cheers
  13. Hi all, sorry if this is a stupid question. I am making a string thru body and was wondering if I use the same string ferrules on the top and back of the body or are they different? Some guitars seem to have smaller ones on the top but I haven't really seen them about. Cheers
  14. I was only after the tuners really. I've been collecting parts for a while and I only need the tuners and the internal electrics. Yeah, I was trying to figure out what makes the tuners hazardous! Bloody Europe!
  15. I just got an email from Stewmac cancelling my order because "they are not compliant with the European Union's RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) Directive" That's me back to square one. I don't suppose anyone knows any UK suppliers that can sell them seperately?
  16. Thanks for the advice guys! I decided to take the plunge this morning and cut it with a hand saw. It didn't come out too badly actually. I had a bit of trouble getting the joint perfectly straight but it's all glued up now. Guess I'll find out in the morning if it's worked!
  17. Thanks a lot Stu,there's a lot of useful info there!
  18. Sorry to be a pain, but that thread link doesn't work. I just get a blank page.
  19. Hi all, I am about to start building my first guitar and was just wondering what is the best way to cut a scarf joint? Should I attempt it with a band saw or a hand saw? Thanks
  20. Thanks guys! I live in England and was having trouble finding any on English sites. I managed to get exactly what I wanted from stewmac for $62 inc. shipping. A set of six in England would cost about £50 ($100). Thanks again!
  21. Hi all, Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I'm in the planning stages of my first build. I will be building a 7 string with 4 x 3 tuners but I can't seem to find sets of 7 tuners anywhere, only 6's. Does anyone know somewhere that sells them? Cheers Nigel
