the natural one is the one from earlier in this thread that was vintage violin, when i decided i was going to go back to nitrocellulose lacquer, the customer and i decided that the grain was too nice to put color over, and went for a natural finish... the color in the pickup routes is leftover from the old finish, but will be resolved before this is done. the purple one is getting mated to an RG2077XL neck with all chrome hardware and BKP's.

  2. Because heaven forbid you might want to make a guitar with good tonewood then cover up the wood with a nice color...?

You guys really need to lighten up...I am so sick of butt ugly wood colored guitars..give me a nice paint job any day...black is always good...but anything is better than clear coated walnut...unless it is highly figured claro walnut... :D

i agree mostly, except i'm so sick of black guitars :D

  3. Thanks Wes!

Looks like it's going to turn out nice. Keep us updated on the progress.

I try to update us much I can.

Here are some pics of the parts:

    Tuners

Bridge, 15 6mm MOP dots and nut blanks.

Pots with knobs, ferrules, about 2,5 meters of fretwire and trussrod.

    -Juze aka Ghroath

    none of those pictures work

edit: weird, i got the "moved or deleted" image earlier on all 3, but now they all work :D

  4. That is available from www.hipshotproducts.com . Let Jason know that you saw it here on a RockBeach first!

Thanks for the link, I looked around quite a bit but I found no mention of that piece of hardware. Shouldn't it be in w/ the ferrules? or does it come with the bridge? Anyway, I might consider getting some made at work out of stainless. :D

They don't apparently have it on the product listings apparently. Contact them via the "contact us" link and talk to Jason. Tell him Boggs referred you.

do you know if they make them for 7 and 8 strings?

  5. you can mask, but scraping looks cleaner in the end. I use a blade of some sort, mostly an exacto knife, but a chisel if its there and handy.

Candy can be stain/dye + lacquer, or actual candy paints. It just needs to be suspended over lacquer, and not touching the wood itself. There is a clear coat over the light blue, although I didnt get a photo. If you know what Im talking about with my method, and you use it on your own builds, credit me :D

why? you didn't invent the candy process, maybe you should be crediting whoever did?

  6. If you're into chopping it up a bit, just rout out the pickup behind the soundhole and use the springs on the pickup to adjust height - like using a pickguard, only straight through the guitar top. You don't indicate single coil or hb. Also - where are you going to put the pots? :D Presumably, you could flatten a spot on the top and add a volume pot there, same with an output jack at the bottom (although this would use a bit of wire). May want to also consult with PSW on here who has some rather interesting ideas on pickups of all variety (especially sustainers).

i would not recommend this, if its an X braced guitar, say goodbye to your structural stability, you'll ruin the guitar.

  7. hey

can i see an example of whta you mean when u say super thin?

    like how thin exactly?

Michael, check out BlackMachine guitars for an idea of what Matt is getting at.

    www.blackmachine.net

They average between the high 20 and mid 30mm thick. I would REALLY like to play one!

anywhere from 28-40mm thick, depending on model...

  8. Its bad but the zebra wood is the worst!!! that stuff stinks and my blood wood is the best it smells like cinnamon.

Oh, I LOVE the smell of bloodwood when it's being worked. It makes up for what it does to the tools. I just did some desk clocks with some bocote. It smelled pretty nice too.

The zebra I have wasn't as rank as everyone else says it is. Maybe I just got lucky. It was pretty prone to chip-out, which made planing an adventure.

I was working with a bunch of woods for the desk clocks, so I can't remember which one, either butternut or basswood... DANG! Straight-up dirty underwear. It's just gawd-offal.

i think bocote smells like pickles :D not that bad, but i wouldn't say it smelled nice either :D
