  1. Your pots, selector switch, output jack and bridge must all be connected to a common ground wire otherwise you become the earth when the strings etc. are touched by your hand.
  2. Cool Im not getting ripped off. The Maple cost under US $4.00.
  3. I was actually pricing some Mahogany for my student builds at our local specialist timber importer. I asked about American Ash and Maple and they had only one piece of 50mm (2"0) thick x 170mm (7") Ash in stock. It is 2.4mtrs (8'0) long so I grabbed it. Dont tell my wife though as Im not allowed to build any more guitars at this time? Looks nice and clean, slab sawn with one knot right at one end but enough for two strat bodies or the like. They had an off cut of clean Maple that had been planed for flooring and was the right thickness for a Strat neck. It cost me $42.00 US equivalent for both bits which I thought wasn't too bad. I know what to ask for when looking for Maple for necks now.
  4. How thick is the veneer and is it a flat surface its going on to?
  5. You havent given enough detail as to exactly what you are doing? Pics?
  6. Yeah the signal takes longer because it gets dizzy thru those curly things.
  7. I also have a 3 way from Stew Macs that doesn't always work properly on the neck pickup of the first electric guitar I built. By flicking the switch back and forth it usually comes right. I have never got around to fishing it out and running some fine wet/dry paper thru the contacts as I'm sure that would fix it. I tried switch cleaner but it didn't make much difference. I know it is annoying if your gigging and you have switch problems. So far the same type switch on my 2nd electric works perfectly. I wonder if they may have had a bad batch made at some time.
  8. Distortion pedals are a personal preference. What I think is really good, you may not like. I would take your guitar to a music shop and try out some to see what they sound like thru your guitar and the same amp you will be using. Remember that by using an EQ pedal you can change how it can sound as well.
  9. Thanks guys for that info. I can draw it out with those measurements.
  10. I have a student that wants to build an Explorer type guitar. Can someone please give me the the diagonal length across the pointy bits of the body and the waist measurement. I can work out the other dimensions if I have those sizes so I can order the wood for it. Also what is the finished thickness? Thanks.
  11. Hey Samba, Are you going to use the long Brian May special type curly cord. Stops you falling off the stage but it bungies you back and slams you into your amp. LOL
  12. I had that problem on my 335 I built and I think my single acting truss rod was slightly bound up. You could back bow it but had to loosen the rod and bend the neck to get it to go back. I ended up putting 11 gauge strings on my guitar and that put the extra weight on to move the neck.
  13. Hey Perry, Now I know what your making those fancy "nail boxes" for. I will be interested to see the finished head.
  14. I have asked this question on other forums and some people swear XYZ brand cable sounds so much better. I use Planet Waves cables which are nice and flexible plus have the little ridge on the jack plug so they sit in really tight and don't fall out. I have other cables I have made myself and I don't think I can distinguish between them and the PW cables myself. There are cables out there that are made specifically for guitar or bass etc. so they must color the sound and not be transparent so to speak.
  15. Fret the strings at the 3rd fret and make sure they just clear the first fret. If they don't, they are too low and you will have to raise the slot. The proper way is to shim the nut or replace it. As a quick fix for the treble strings too deep I have super glued a piece of the matching gauge guitar string into the slot and filed it to suit.
  16. Those are probably the most informative guitar lessons I have watched. Excellent stuff. I must go and practise now.
  17. Yeah who are you talking about? Which amp manufacturer? Anyway I still like my Vox VT. Vox roxs! It is good enough for my intermediate level guitar playing. Now if I could only play like Stevie Ray Vaughn it may well be a different story.
  18. I have sometimes yearned for a tube amp but it seems they need to be matched to the output sound level you require. If you have a 30-50 watt tube amp and drive it to its optimum level then it is too loud for many situations and turned down don't sound as good. Put it through an attenuator and it kills the tone, so yes it is a tricky situation.
  19. Stewart MacDonald have a repair kit, but it is expensive but may give you an idea how to repair it. http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Truss_rods/Spe...Rescue_Kit.html What you need is a Die nut to clean up the thread but it will be to large on the OD. to fit. Firstly you will need to establish the correct diameter and thread it is. I would probably see if I could buy a cheap Die nut or threading die the type that goes in a holder and grind the outside down so it will be small enough to fit the cavity. Once the thread is repaired you will need a long nut (steel) so it has the maximum length of thread to pull on as the thread will not be 100%. Make sure you lube the threads well with petroleum jelly or silicone grease before screwing the nut on.
  20. Why do you need such a big gauge on the guitar. It will only put undue stress on everything and try to tear itself to pieces.
  21. Thanks guys. Ive only heard good things about GFS pickups on several sites Ive been on. When you think of it, what is the difference between a cheap and botique pickup.? After all they use much the same wire, magnets, bobbins, potting etc, so yeah I will leave it to others to argue about why big prices are justified for name brands.
  22. Im pretty sure Stewart MacDonald does a 12 string Strat type and Tuneomatic. They will have nuts too.
  23. That is a strange combination of pickups. You really need a neck only and a bridge only in my book. Why not just use a 5 way switch as that gives plenty of combinations and wiring schematics are easy to find. Fender.com go to resources and wiring and switching diagrams has all the info needed.
  24. Even easier just get a longer screw about the same gauge and it will have some fresh wood to bite into.
  25. Ive always been a bit weary about buying real cheap pickups as I think you probably get what you pay for. I guess these would be the sort of thing a Squire strat would have. Those single coil premium alnico pickup set for $60.00 sound awesome on the sound clips. Has anyone used them?
