  1. Yo,

I'm in the middle of the (interesting) process of trying to cut out my neck without the use of a bandsaw. The neck is a one-piece job with an angled headstock. I managed to hog out the profile (?) by chain drilling on a drill press. Time consuming, but when you have lemons... The next challenge is to cut the shape of the neck and head out. I may be able to get my hands on a jig saw but I'm wondering how to handle the angle on the head and still have the head shape square to it's face (make sense?). I'll try to post a pic later on today of the situation.

  2. I finished my first guitar with just some analine dye (water soluble) that was supposed to be blue. It is on maple, etc. The end result on the mahogany I used for the body was kind of green-ish. I first had a real dilluted stain which ended up super green so I dumped in a ton more of powder. In the end I got blue with a hint of green, depending on the angle.

For my next one, I want to have a dark, forest green color but I know that if I get that kind of stain it's gonna turn out wierd. How do I deal with the yellow-orangey undertones of my wood?

  3. Well, I'm not too woried about the big guns knocking on my door, mafia style. "Mr. Burrill, may we have a word with you?" *punch in the stomach*

    :D

I suppose you would have to plead your case, just like PRS is right now. If that fails, what can they do? Tell you to stop? Good gravy, anything but that!! :D

  4. I'm not really talking about the bigger guys (Ibanez, Gibson vs. PRS, etc.), I'm mainly talking about Joe Guitar Builder that builds an accurate Strat copy cause his/her client wants a Strat but with some options not available with the conventional Strats.

For example, if I get someone who wants me to build them a Strat that feels like their other Strats but with some custom wierd paint job. Except for the paint, it's a 100% Strat rip off. What's to stop Fender from nailing me? In all likelihood they're not gonna care because I'm not mass producing them for a major chunk of their market share. Is their anything that gives me permission to copy their design? There's probably some clause about making them for yourself (ie. not profit) vs. making them for a living.

Legal stuff makes my head spin :D

  5. Aren't the top ones mainly just a ring to make it so that the string doesn't gouge the naked wood? They have rolled edges so that there's no sharp metal edge that the string is grinding against (me thinks that the back ferrules have sharp edges where the string would touch it).

MzI: Do you use the flush mount tele ferrules for the top?

I've been wondering where to get some top ferrules as well.

Both kinds seem a little jagged where the string would be bent to head toward the bridge
