  1. Hey look its me holding the guitar...lol

Nice to see you here Dj, haven't seen you at the Asylum in a little while.

And Thanks for the link to the bit site Geo!

I'm Ben and XvX is my friend Jordan. I'm the designer of the guitar and he's the funder...lol I'm poor because I buy cars, guitars, and parts for both....lol :D

If any of you have any advice on how to build a guitar from almost scratch we're willing to listen!!! LOL

    Thanks!

    Ben

yeah i'm back up at school now. you guys should look at all the tutorials on pg.com and use the search here - there is an INSANE amount of info here. you guys are already leaps and bounds ahead of me as far as starting a guitar goes so now all there is to it is to get down to business and do it up.

do you have any plans for the neck?

  2. UPDATE: Shaped and routed the headstock. Need to ease the volute a couple of mm to accommodate the tuner locating screw. The back of the tenon needs easing a couple of mm also as the top is a little too tall compared to the wings. Other than that - good to go!

i think my favorite part of the thunderbird style is the headstock... i always thought the body would make for a great 8 string, but i wouldn't want to f. with the flow of the headstock it's so perfect!

  3. i work for a BC Rich dealer and custom shops are AT THE ABSOLUTE LEAST 2 years out (and they're made like ****!). OH! and they cost about $3000+.

this guy's getting an awesome deal, and before you do anything i would personally just try to make that abundantly clear. just my 2 cents...

Is he?? How can you make a judgement on the POSSIBLE playability of this guitar from a builder with no reputation?? If it doesnt play AT ALL, he has been 'ripped off'. Your comparing a company with decades of history, tens of thousands of quality guitars, a dealer network, and staff, to a guy who was just 'happy' to do a job for 'free' to learn how to build guitars (or at least get a bit more practice).

Personally, i say chalk it up to experience, and dont make the mistake of taking on ANY jobs that arent for you personally, until you are more equipped to handle clients. Prime example of getting involved with something when you arent ready to. The fact he isnt paying you (essentually) means he doesnt value your work (and you dont either).

    point taken.

i just figured i'd throw that in there as the current bc rich custom shop stuff is absolute garbage (for the price). whereas, if the guy paying for this mockingbird paid at most a couple hundred bucks, he's still getting (what appears to be) a pretty awesome guitar.

i'm completely with you, rhoads, when it comes to taking on clients. i've only been on this board a short while (and haven't even built anything for cryin out loud), but this is at least the 3rd time i've seen something like this.

  4. for that guitar, personally i would move the pickup selector switch to in between the volume/tone knobs (personally i prefer it there...but its all down to preference)

and then mount a threeway killswitch on the upper horn (ON/OFF/ON - so if it gets accidentally knocked, it doesnt cut out the sound for more than an unnoticable split-second)

    so then you'd have:

1- only one body modification (a hole between the pots, and there should be room there for the switch in the cavity)

2 - doesn't look like a cheap little switch, as it would *look* exactly the same as the current setup pickup selector.

    anywho, just my $0.02

edit:- my computer should turn itself off when i've been up since 430am :D just realised that my reply has very little to do with the topic.

haha well thanks for the reply! i was thinking that for the positioning myself. which makes me think of that manson guitar with the killswitch built in to the p/u selector. has anyone done that with any sucess?

  5. I've got a miniswitch kicking about from Maplin that is locking one way & momentary the other, eg. ON/OFF/ON (momentary)

I had planned on using it as a kill switch so that it can be locked on when down, locked off when centre & then when held up it would be on but would return to off when released for some Morello stuttering. It could of course work as off/on/momentary off too.

    just a thought.

hey man i was looking through killswitch topics and saw this post

i'm looking to install some sort of killswitch in my fernandes ravelle dave kushner (it should be here tomorrow or thurs!). i was thinking a killswitch would be killer in something with a sustainer and this sounds like an awesome idea, with the momentary switch and the locking. so did you try using that switch and how much sucess did you have?

i used the search and it seems like a lot of people had noise problems installing various types of killswitches, so i was also wondering how to avoid this. i'm also looking for the least intrusive way of installing such a switch (ie. as little body modification as possible). i'm a pretty big electronics n00b so i ask for some patience in dealing with me.

  6. does anyone know where i should go to get some nice bass pickups? i really don't know anything about bass pickups. i'm willing to drop maybe 75 bucks on them. or so. maybe more if i need to. i've been watching ebay, but i don't really know what to be looking for, even. any suggestions?

Here are a couple of options. I have a couple of basses with the P style dimarzio pups and they sound great. I really think the dimarzio bass pups are under rated.

    J/J

    P/J

i agree about the dimarzios i put a pair in a fretless (mexi) j bass and they sound AWESOME. total classic j bass growl. can't speak on the p pickups (yet...) but i would imagine they're great too.

i think i scored my model j's on ebay for like $45-50

  7. iv stained the neck. it doesnt look so great in this picture - its missing all the subtle yellows greens and reds that are in it, and wet (as it will look when finished) it looks pretty damn sexy

    061206_002049.jpg

the only problem is the clean edge on the wave - a lot of stain has seeped under the tape and its a bugger to get off. any tips?

that blue is SO KICKASS. i'm loving this guitar... sorry i don't have any advice, i'm but a lowly newbie

  8. I agree, you will play best on whatever guitar feels best/you enjoy playing, but for the record, Buckethead's guitar is not a standard Les Paul. I read some article on him/it and it has either a 25.5 or 25 inch scale length. It looks normal on him because he is a huge guy, like 6'4" or maybe more.

yeah, i saw him live in march and he's even bigger than that! i'm about 6'4" myself and he was maybe 6'7" or 6'8"... anyway his LP is HUGE they made the body bigger for him and i'm sure they made the scale length longer as well
