  1. I immediately believe that. They are not even cool today in my opinion. To my eyes it is the ugliest mass produced guitar ever.

OMG! Man, we could never get along ;-) I believe the Les Paul is absolutely without a doubt the sexiest, best all around solid body guitar design ever. It was designed after a womans body, you gotta love it! ;-) bOb

  2. I am debating buying a Carvin neck through and building an Explorer with a flame maple top. Trouble is, I can't seem to find anyplace that carries bookmatched tops that are big enough. Most pieces listed are 7 inches wide for each half, making of course a 14 inch wide top. My Ibanez lawsuit Destroyer (exact copy of 58 Explorer) measures 10 inches wide from the middle of the guitar to the edge of the large bout on the upper side of the guitar. So that means I need a top with 10 inch minimum matched halves...or 20 ich wide total, correct? I just wonder where Hamer and companies like that get wood to top out their Explorers. Any info would be helpful. Thanks, bOb.

OK gents here is an idea for my first project. I have an old Alvarez 12 string acoustic that I haven't played since the 80's because the top started bulging below the bridge and even after I had my luthier shave the bridge down, the action became too high and I stuck it in the closet. After finding this website, I have been itching to have a project to begin. This guitar is useless as is, so it could be my ideal first project, if I scrap it, no big loss.

My question is this, should I try to fix the top as-is, or should I attempt to re-top this thing? There are no cracks or visible anomalies in the top (at least from the outside). I realize re-topping is a big step, so what do you guys do for bulging tops, especially on 12 strings? My luthier said he had ways of correcting the top but wouldn't divulge his secrets. So now I am asking you guys for your secrets and advice :D

I have some pics of this thing I could post if anybody wanted to see it. I will attempt to stick the camera inside to see if I can get a shot of the bracing and maybe spy anything awry there. Thanks for any advice you can give me. bOb

  4. Hello all, my name is Bob and although I have been playing guitar for 40 years, I have never built one. Been sketching idea's for many years though. This really seems like a good place to hang out. I like the fact that there is no foul language allowed, I hope everybody gets along here and don't feel they need to use it. My idea for my first solidbody is to get a neck-through from Carvin or Stew-Mac and to build from there. I am a bit intimidated at building a neck from scratch. I also want to build an acoustic from one of the Martin or Stew-Mac or LMI kits. I could use some ideas on that from people with experience, which kit they would recommend and why. This seems like a really cool place and I hope to be hanging out here for a long time. Thanks to all in advance! bOb :D
