  1. So I got motivated the other day and dissambled my recently bought Dean Firecrackle. :D

I took lots of pictures of the guitar to share B)

I also found quite a few interesting things plus a problem :D ...As I took off the remnants of the locking nut (that was covered with what looked like snot, I might add), the nut came off.....it must have come unglued of its 20-ish years of existence :D I took it to the local repair shop to have it reglued....hopefully it won't cost too much, cuz' im broke.....

The Kahler-ish bridge ways like 2 pounds B) The previous owners did some interesting modifications to it. It has been drilled into twice, in what I believe was the attempt to convert it to a hardtail bridge. The rear springs look quite new, as does the screws.

From the pictures, what type of locking nut do I need to replace to previous one with? Would a Kahler or Floyd-rose do the trick if the string gaps and nut width matched up? What the criteria for replace the locking nut?

There is suprisingly little fret wear for a 20-ish year old instrument.

I plan on replacing the locking nut first, then putting in a set of EMGz(S,S,81) when I save up some money...... then it should be a screamer B)

Here come the pics. I'll link most of them.

Any advice is always appreciated :read

  2. you guys forget that i used to be in love with wood grain as well.but now every cheap ass schecter and bc rich has a nice quilted maple or flame top...i am sick of looking at a great top on a mediocre guitar.

a good custom paint job is just as tough and more pleasing to me.you guys will tire of wood grain as well some day soon.go to guitar center..look at what they have laying around for $400 B)

I can agree...but I must say I love my Schecter Omen 6 (black paint, no flamed maple :D )......great guitar for the money :D

  3. I got the Dean FireCrackle back from the local music store where I had it inspeceted for any serious damage. They gave it a clean bill of health and even managed to get the neck single coil to work. :D

My question is: Should I start the modification process??? An how much should I spend???

Stage 1: replace the fake Kahler with a 7300 Kahler and new locking nut= 240(plus tax)

    Stage 2: replace sucky pickups with EMGz (81, S, S)combo= 230(plus tax)

There goes 500$ into my 107$ guitar.

I like the guitar a lot, its crazy. I just want to know if it'll be worth it. :D

    Your opinions are much appreciated.

  4. B) Im going through that blasted Mel Bay book with my guitar teacher :D It sucks but I can sight-read kinda...but painfully slow for a 10 year old.

I say you teach the boy something to keep him interested and encourage him to get a teacher..... Smoke on the Water, Iron Man, Born to be Wild :D Something that will keep the drive to get better going. I think getting him used to common chords like G,D,A is great, as millions of songs use them. Definitely teach him the the Blues scale and/or pentatonic.... 5th fret A pentatonic is a great basic chops builder, running through it slow and then speeding up.... even throwing in alternate picking eventually B)

My little brother is 6 and has a short attention span...i'll give him a year or two.... :D

  5. :D My First Post!!! Cool site.....I've browsed around from time to time and decided to join.

2 days ago I bought a Dean Firecrackle at the local pawn shop for 107$.... they where asking 225$ :D

Its in decent shape, its got plenty of dings in the red and black crackle finish.

The neck single coil doesn't work, but the humbucker and the middle pickup work fine.

The Kahler style tremolo was made in Korea and is missing the Trem bar. Good look on finding replacement part...LOL

I bought it because its a interesting guitar to say the least....and I want to turn it into a flamethrower :D

Im going to take it to my local music store to get it looked at, hopefully it doesn't have any severe problems(truss rod/intonation).

If it gets a clean bill of health I want to put EMGz in it and replace the faux "Kahler" with a real Kahler. B)

The problem is I can't find any information on this guitar. I know that it was a Dean import in the 80's...

I was hoping that I could find a fellow owner who knows some information....

    Thoughts anyone????
