  1. Hey guys, sorry I didn't get back sooner. Tons of great info! The guitar is a semihollow tele that I've been building. The neck is nearly new and made by Larry Karosa of Karosa guitars. In any case, I've been learning a lot as I go. I think I'm going to take everybody's advice and get it checked out by someone who knows better what they are looking at. It's simply not worth me screwing it up due to inexperience. That being said, can anybody recommend a trustworthy yet economical shop in the SF bay area(preferably the east bay) that would be right for the job?
  2. Alright, so I've gotten my truss rod adjusted using the tutorial I linked to fromthis site so as to get the proper bow. The spec on the 7th fret is about .010 inches using the straigt edge and feeler guages. Once I got this far, it started becoming very hard to turn the truss rod so I decided to stop as I don't need a broken neck(how hard is it to turn your truss rod nuts guys? I felt like it required considerable effort). Also, the neck angle was properly set by a pro. In any case, my problem is this. Unless I have the strings set high on the bridge, the string clips the last fret when I'm playing on the last 4 or so(So when I hit the 20th fret, the string hits the 22 fret and I hear the 22 fret note). If I have them high enough to clear the last fret and get the full range of notes, the action is just waaay too high. What are my options at this point?
  3. Title says it all. I've checked all the parts suppliers I can think of. Thanks!
  4. Alright, so I spent some time reading the wiring and shielding sections. It had a lot of good info, but I'm not sure I found anything that applied to my situation(I hope I read the right thing). Anyways, is there a method of process of elimination that I can follow to isolate the problem? After doing some reading, my guess is a grounding issue as well, considering when I(aka a grounded object) touch the bridge, strings, or jack the noise goes away completely.
  5. Ever since I wired up my guitar, I've experienced a very loud buzz/hum(I don't konw the difference). It is quite audible, but goes away when I place my finger on the metal end of my guitar chord(aka where my chord plugs into the jack, the metal part on the actual end of the chord). The sound does not get nearly as quiet if I touch anywhere else. Any ideas? If you guys need more info to help me deduce, please let me know. I'm still new to this.
  6. Hey Everyone! Just wanted to introduce myself. I play a Gibson Nighthawk, and I'm currently working on my first project guitar, a semihollow Tele. Here's where I'm at so far: Semi-Hollow Tele- Body: Hard ash body with Lyptus top Neck: -Padauk with cocobolo fretboard -jackson style jumbo frets -25.5 scale length Pickups: -GFS Mean 90 in the neck -GFS Hot Rails in the bridge Hardware: -GFS Gotoh style tuners -some kind of bridge(don't know where it's from) -2 500k pots, unknon brand -3 way switch, unknown brand -GFS jack -Some sort of cool strap locks, looks like GFS I'm sort of building a jazz guitar. I'm sort of using Mike Stern's setup as an inspiration, although I'm definately putting my own spin on it. So far, it is together and playable, although it needs some work. Work that it needs(and questions I'll be asking in the upcoming weeks after some searching ;-)) 1)I got a little too ambitious when filing the nut to adjust the action. Needs a new nut. Thinking of going graphite to keep all my hardware black. 2)Needs a little soldering cleanup 3)Needs shielding from each pickup grounded. For some reason I left it ungrounded when I soldered everything up at first. 4)The biggest and most noticable flaw is the neck positioning. My neck is 55.5mm wide at the pocket, and my pocket is maybe 57mm wide. There is a gap, mainly near the top that offsets the neck by a bit making the strings sit towards the top of the neck(the low E side). See picture. When I was wanding the neck pocket to adjust the height, I did it by hand <---(would advise against) as I did not have access to a router. The corners of the pocket are rounded so I can't slide the neck all the way to the top of the pocket. I need to eventually find access to a router and make the corners of the pocket square, and then slide the neck upwards. Lastly, I'm going to need to have some sort of shim to fill the gap. I don't think I'll be able to do this myself, so I'll probably have to pay a luthier. Don't want to think about what it will cost. Anyways, just wanted to say hello.
