  1. so i guess you're saying that i would treat it pretty much like the fabric tutorial? cool beans, that doesn't seem too bad! so what kind of glue should i use on photo paper? and what sort of clear?
  2. So i was thinking about doing another little project... i have an extra black RG7421 body laying around, and i'd like to do something crazy for the finish on it. A few years ago, my S/O did a series of abstract photos using a Holga camera, and they turned out REALLY cool. they're mostly just big washes of bright colors with no discernible "real" objects in them. One of them is a bright red and green splotch/swirl that i use as my decktop background right now. it looks awesome, and i'm thinking if i could have it blown up big enough it would make a sweet top on this guitar! i'd probably just leave the back and sides the gloss black they are now, or just strip them and stain it black with india ink. so has anyone done a finish with a photo underneath? what would i need to have the photo printed on? what type of adhesive would i use to adhere it to the top? also, what types of clear would be okay to put over it? thanks guys!
  3. Hey guys! so i still have my very first guitar (ibanez rg470), and i don't think i ever want to get rid of it for sentimental reasons. but i never play the thing, and its because my taste in guitars has changed and there's things about this guitar that i don't like anymore. namely, the useless middle single coil and the cheap Floyd knockoff trem! I don't like trems at all anymore, so i'm wanting to do a bunch of crazy stuff to this thing. i want to strip it, refinish it, refill the single coil slot, fill the trem routing, and replace it with a regular fixed bridge. i think i'll also throw some scallops on there for the hoot of it (if you're gonna go, go all out, right?). i know some of Paul Gilbert's guitars have refilled trems on them. how would i go about doing this? can of Bondo and a lot of gumption?
  4. Would it be kosher to use Tru Oil over a green stain? I've got my body completely stained green now with Minwax wood finish, and i'm tempted to try this Tru Oil stuff out! i just don't know how it would affect the stain, if at all. Any pointers?
  5. haha awesome, thanks for the advice!!! a few quick questions for you.... what brand of laq did you use, and where did you get it? i live in a tiny little town, so home depot and lowes are my only choices.... also, when wet sanding, do i just basiclly dip the sandpaper in water and then do to town on the body? seems like all that water on the finish could be bad... thanks!!!!
  6. thanks for the link! read through it, and i'm afraid a lot of it is lost on me. Lots of technical jargon that i'm just not that familiar with. what i really need is a clear explanation of how to get a good shiny clear on my guitar in total n00b terms, as this is the first time i've done this. there's lots of dudes on here who have done tons of great work, i just need to know what i need to do. thanks!!
  7. About to start the clearing phase on my unending RG7421 refinish!!! yeah!!! i stained the body green using a minwax color stain. i'm thinking the next step should be to use a Minwax spray gloss poly on top. what are some tips you all could share for getting a strong, durable, and shiny finish?? Or is there some other product i should try? Thanks!
  8. well balls......... i got a lot of the sides cleaned up fine, but the inside of those damn horns are killing me. after much scraping and sanding there, i'm left with a faded, almost pastel green residue. i've already scraped/ lightly sanded into the wood a fair bit. i'm thinking i'll just have to live with it! No biggie, its a lesson learned for next time, i guess
  9. awesome, thanks for the tip!!! so what does this scraper tool look like, and where can i get one?
  10. Hey again! so, in the latest chapter of my neverending rg7421 refinish... i had previously taped up the body edges before staining my guitar green with minwax stain. now that i removed the tape, i've found several spots where the stain leaked through onto the "binding". i've started trying to go through and spot sand with 100 and 220, but i'm having some problems. wherever i sand through the stain, it smudges it across the clean bare wood and makes it greenish, too. this sucks! are there any tips for fixing this up? any way i can use some spirits or something without endangering the rest of the finish?
  11. so yeah, this may be a stupid question. sorry! so my ibanez is now stained green, but it feels a bit coarse/dry in a few spots. should i try and fix this before i put poly on it, or will the poly cover all? thanks in advance... p.s. if anyone has an answer to my poly over india ink question, please check out that thread, too!
  12. Hey again! okay, more on my rg7421 project..... body is now stained bright green (yay! looks great!) with a natural stripe going down the center of the guitar. i was planning on doing the good old 'natural binding' trick, but my tape leaked in a few spots... so now what i'm thinking is i'm going to stain some black "binding" around the edge of the body using india ink! should look pretty sweet with the bright green, i think. so, my question is, will poly be alright on the stain AND the ink? i'm worried it would make it run for some reason. maybe i'm just being paranoid! also, should i go with the minwax wipe-on poly or the spray on? thanks a lot, you guys have made this project easy!
  13. huzzah, thats what i thought... started staining the back today, and it is looking GREEEEEN!!! it will probably turn out **** ugly, i'm actually kinda pumped about it. will post pics when i can get to them! just out of curiosity, what is everyone's preferred stain application method?
  14. hey guys! okay, continuing on with my neverending ibanez rg7421 refinish project.... i've now sanded down the entire body, and have found to my great fortune that the wood doesn't look bad at all! its a 3 piece body, with the center piece being a somewhat dark half inch piece of basswood running dead on down the centrer of the guitar. its much the same way a lot of neck-thrus are. here's my plan... i want to stain that center strip a nice reddish brown, and stain the rest of the body with a green minwax stain that i found at Lowes. i was also planning on doing the old 'natural binding' trick around the edge of the body, using automotive pinstriping tape. here's my questions... will i need to use a sanding sealer first before i start staining? are there any precautions i should take trying to stain that middle strip? If i tape it off either with frog tape or automotive pinstripe tape will the stain bleed through?
  15. Hey there! Been a long time since i've been on this board, but i need some help refinishing and you all are the best place to go! I've decided to do some work on my Ibanez RG7421. I'm installing new pickups, possibly replacing the bridge, and refinishing it, too. I want the guitar to end up looking like that first batch of Meshuggah's Ibanez 8 strings that they got, the ones that were stained a satiny black. I've sanded the body down to the wood, and its not too bad looking of a pice of basswood. It has a somewhat maple-y grain pattern and color to it. Also, its 1 piece, which struck me as a little odd for Ibanez! Anyway, i was planning on using the new line of Minwax color stains (available at Lowe's) to stain the body. They have one called Onyx that appears to be a nice charcoal with black settling in the deeper points of the grain. Has anyone used this? Or is there some other better stain i could use? Keep in mind, i'm going for black, not a super dark brown like many ebony stains. I was probably then going to seal it up with a wipe on poly satin finish. Should i spray the body with sanding sealer before appyling my stain? Also, to what grit should i sand the body to before getting started with the stain/sanding sealer? thanks so much!
  16. Thanks for the response, fellas! I checked out some of the other topics, and call me slow (i was homeschooled)...but they don't make much clear sense to me. If someone could do a clear drawing or diagram of exactly what i need to do, or just spell it out for me like a retard, that would be perfect. I prefer to do the Charleston. 23 skidoo!
  17. Hey guys! I have an Ibanez RG7421 that i want to do a couple things to... 1. remove the tone knob 2. replace it with a kill button, a momentary on/off switch I think i got the right kind of switch... its rated 3A at 125VAC, 1.5A at 150VAC. It has a black button that is spring-loaded, and it has two lugs for soldering at the bottom. If someone could give me some step by step basic instructions, i would dance at their wedding. Thanks!
