  1. Hi all, I got a warmoth body from ther showcase bin a while ago and one thing I didn't notice when I bought it is that the pickup routes (HH) are routed deeper where the adjustment screws would hang - this guitar needs mounting rings...

So, for aesthetics, say I don't want to use mounting rings - is there a way I can mount the pickups to the body directly? I would assume I need some sort of a shim in there, but is that practical?

    Thanks, Dave

  2. Ok, all of my StewMac stuff arrives tomorrow, so I'm going to get started on my flame maple capped basswood body. The questions I have are:

    1. The maple top is relatively thin - only about 1/8 of an inch. I want to do the faux binding thing, but do I extend it down on the side past the maple into the basswood (say, 1/4") or do I just run it down to the end of the maple?

    2. I'm finishing the basswood sides and back with the StewMac Black Gloss Lacquer, but I'm staining the top with the water based TransTint stains. What order should I do everything - I'm thinking this:

    1. Wet & light sand the top with 220 to clean it up

    2. Tape off the faux binding

    3. Stain the top - sand back - restain

    4. Spray the whole guitar with san & seal

    5. Retape the binding & cover the top

    6. Spray the back & sides with the black lacquer

    7. Spray the clear coats

Now, do I sand back the black on the sides and back when it dries?

Thanks for the help, all - I'm trying to piece all of this together from different sites and I just want to make sure I have it right...

  3. Hey all, I just got a body from Warmoth which has a flamed maple top on a basswood body. I was looking at teh reranch site, but their store is down - I need to put together a list of what I'll need to finish it & was wondering if I coul get soe help from the folks here.

What I want to do is the following:

    1. Top - Transparent dye - I was thinking a black or dark brown first and then sanding to being out the flame followed by a tobacco brown or amber.

    2. Basswood body - I think I'm just going to make it black, like an ernie ball

    3. Faux binding - I'll tape the maple on the corners to give it a binding look

So, what I need to figure out is what & how much do I need to buy? I've read that I shouldn't have to get filler for the body since neither maple nor basswood needs it, but how much of the other stuff (dye, clear, finishing compound, etc) should I get?

Also, any recommendations on products which can be purchased from sites other than re-ranch would be helpful - again, since it look sliek their store is down...

    Thanks, Dave
