metal piece on body to improve tone?

hi guys

just a interesting thought.i just read thru about this old kramer 'showster' guitar where they use both internal or external metal pieces to balance the guitar and thus improve sustain and string power.the metal pieces look like a tail fin or a metal strip on the body shape.
