Padouk Fingerboard

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I'm going to build this fretless bass, I have some padouk which my friend, to whom I am building this bass, fell in love with. I also have some brown ebony. We both are concerned about the enduran"e of the wood though, especially on a fretless bass. What do you think? Could I use it without any problems, or would I have to switch to ebony? Do you know any processes that may strenghted the wood whatsoever?

I think the paduak would be fine if you put a coat of clear epoxy over the board. I am not certain on the hardness of Paduak, so I don't know if the epoxy would be absolutely necessary or not, but I would do it for good measure, especially if the bass is going to be played with roundwounds. With flatwound strings, I think it would be less of an issue. Good luck! I am curious to see what a padouk fingerboard would look like! :D
