Body Neck Pocket Advice

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

I'm a new poster. I was wondering if you could give me some advice on determining if I need to angle the neck pocket on the guitar I'm building. I have included links to the pics of the neck and body. The neck I'm using is one of the few 6 strings made by specter (usually known for basses). The body is ready for the for the neck pocket. I'm using a Ricky 6 string bridge, Ricky toaster pickups and a archtype tail stop.

The neck looks like it has a Fender heel on it but it does have an angled-back neck for 3x3 tuners. Any help on determining if an angle is needed in the neck pocket and any suggestions on how to cut it? I do have a router with the correct bit with a depth/guide bearing. This is my second go at a guitar. The first didn't need an angledd neck pocket but I'm not sure on this one. I would Rather get some advice than goof it up and try to fix it.

Thanks in advance.

I thought part of the angle equation has to do with what bridge you're using?

I have another more general question (don't mean to hijack, I'll start a new topic if need be):

is it common practice to do your finish BEFORE routing? what is the advantage in that?

Thanks everyone for your replies. They will help me greatly. To idch, the finish isn't near final on the guitar. On the other guitar I built (didn't need a neck angle), no dye/stain or paint was applied till after routing. I put a couple of coats of the dye on the body to see how I was going to like the color on the flame top. You're right to put a full finish on it then router it would be pretty dumb of me.

Thanks again for the replies. Maybe I can get it to play and look as nice as my Gibson SG's and Paul.
