What's The Point Of A 3/4 Neck?

I'm looking at a photo of a couple of 50s Les Paul with a 3/4 neck...looks like the frets are normal size, it's just the the neck attaches to the body at the 14th fret.

So what's the point of a shorter neck like that?

Fun!! You could argue that it saves wear and tear on your elbow but....no, lets not go there. I don't really like playing one but they are kinda cool. Strings are usually at a lower tension and the "grippers" like that.
