I know that there is a tutorial on this on PG but it doesnt really answer my question. If the a neck has backbow shouldn't I just relieve the tension in the trussrod and it would straighten out?

Correct me if I'm wrong please.

that's correct..unless there's another underlying problem relieving pressure on the truss rod, usually a counter clockwise turn, will correct a backbow.
