Tru-oil Or Tung Oil?

MP63

Recommended Posts

I have a maple neck that I stained with StewMac Amber stain. I used denatured alcohol with it.

I like the feel of Tung Oil on the neck, but have not tried Tru-Oil.

Any recommendations for a top coat for the stained neck?

I like the smooth feel of tung oil or the like.

Thank you,

Mike

Tru oil dries faster, harder, provides more protection.

It's simply the better choice; I would never use a straight up oil as a finish on an instrument, always a polymerised one/varnish like TruOil, Danish Oil or Liberon's Finishing Oil (or Miniwax's oil finish stuff, which I've never used).

Right now the edge is sanded smooth.

I just didn't want there to be a lip after I am done.

I know lacquer finishes go on the binding too, so I wondered if the Tru-oil would stick to it.

If this doesn't work, can lacquer go over Tru-oil?

Thanks for the advise.

Just a thought if I'm not too late, If you stain with an oil base stain or on with denatured alcohol there may be a chance of the oil disolving the stain and pulling it out. Do a test and check the rag. Alternately apply the oil first with a soft brush using light strokes, let that dry then apply a second coat softly with a rag. That works for me.
