lining a fretless bass

I want to put fret marker lines on the fretless bass im building.

I only want them to be on the top edge of the fretboard, to maintain the clean look of the blank fretboard.

what way would you recommend i do this?

should i cut the slot with my fret-saw and find some material around the same thicknes, say .020" ?

could these be painted on with careful masking? seeing as the back and sides of the neck will be lacquered, they paint would be protected.

any ideas?

thanks,

John.

I have seen dots inlayed in the actual fret positions (not in between like normal) and also mother of pearl and abalone lines on the top edge only leaving the face of the fret board clean. Dots seem easiest as you only have to drill holes centered in the edge and pop in your material.

Your painting idea seems very feasible. You could even double line on 12 for a "proper" look.

Good luck!
