Spruce is a soft wood, and backs and sides are usually made from hard woods. I believe it can be done though. You'll need thick braces, for sure. I suppose my question would be why you might want to do something so experimental for a first build. Mahogany's not that expensive.

You will definately need thick braces which could make it loose its volume a little. Are you using a spruce top with it? I would also run some small bracing strips up the sides too. You may also need to make them thicker than normal sides and backs but I agree with dpm99, you might want to start with mahogany.
