  1. I've got a load of these three woods, and me not being able to identify anything other than maple and mahogany, don't know what they are! I'm thinking (hoping) the first one is rosewood of some kind, and the third one maybe alder, but I have no clue to the second one, despite using it for a fingerboard! Any help in enlightening me would be greatly appreciated!
  2. no, sorry you'll just have to make them yourself, Just get a good picture and its not that hard.
  3. Just start building a guitar, and buy the tools as you need them, this way you'll get everything that you need and nothing you don't.
  4. I think that if good pickups and hardware are used they con sound okay, because of course the rest of the guitar plays a vital role in the tone. I've never heard an ampeg, so I couldn't judge them, but I personally dislike the danelectros. I think a plastic guitar would sound all right, just a bit lifeless, but then people seem to love steinbergers, so If thats the sound you are after go for it!
  5. I built a bass out of MDF once, and it sounded okay, admittedly it was a through body, and so had mahogany in it too, but it was better than expected. If you are lucky you might be able to find a piece of MDF thick enough for a body without laminating.
  6. When I first started guitar building I considered making a guitar out of glass, and then out of plastic, but dismissed both ideas because they would sound awful anyway, as well as being difficult to build. I'm not saying don't build one, cos they do look cool, but don't expect amazing tone out of a plastic body.
  7. At the minute I'm using a beltsander with a piece of angle iron, but the results aren't brilliant.
  8. How do you get really good joints for two piece bodies and such? do you use a router? power jointer? jointer plane? just wondering because there must be a better way than what I'm doing.

  10. Try fiddling around with your tone pot, you might find that it goes away. But I expect you've tried that.
  11. Have you used holly before, Southpa? what is it like? Cos I've got some and been thinking of using it for fingerboards, as it is very hard, so I thought it would be pretty good, I've never heard of it being used before though.
  12. I was just looking at the Warmoth site and started to read about their bass necks. It said 'Triple reinforced, so I assumed it used carbon fibre rods, however as I read on I found that they are actually steel. Surely this makes the necks noticably heavier? Has anyone used one of the necks, and if so, can the weight difference be felt?
  13. All right then, thanks for the info.
  14. Does anyone know if a strat pickup will fit in the bridge position of a telecaster? Without extra routing and your standard tele bridge, that is.
  15. I've been trying to figure out the simplest way of cutting radii quickly, and this jig looks to be it. Well done for coming up with the idea! I'm gonna go and make one tomorrow.
  16. http://europa.spaceports.com/~fishbake/fpickup/pickup.htm This site has good information about building a humbucker for electric guitar. The principle is the same for bass, just have more windings. a jazz bass single coil has about 10 000 windings. for a info specifically for basses, try this link: http://members.lycos.nl/ajgp/pickups.html. I hope this helps.
  17. ^ good idea, I'll see if I can find one.
  18. Thanks for the answer, but I know that, I just need some info on the kind of specifations most active pickups have, as I am planning on building my own and designing a preamp for it myself. Obviously this way the pickup can have any specs, however I thought it would be good to follow conventions.
  19. Does anyone know roughly how many turns, (and of what gauge) an active bass guitar pickup (single coil) would usually have in it? Or, alternatively the dc resistance of the coil? thanks.
