  1. Hey jaycee, I just noticed your in Wales! Where are you based? I'm up by Bangor.
  2. One that I would build. From what I can see a LP -DC has a neck tenon (I think that's the word for it) running under the neck pickup route. What if you don't want a neck pickup? This is why I'm asking. Thanks for the help.
  3. Since I'm still cluless about a lot of building I thought I'd ask a some questions. 1. If I wanted to build a Les Paul double cut what would be the size of the pieces wood I would need for the body and neck? 2. Am I more likely to have to glue two pieces together than I am of finding a piece large enough to do a one piece body? 3. Does planing a scarf joint at the headstock make it easier or difficuilt to find wood of a proper size? 4. How expensive are different woods compared to each other? Is plain maple expensive? Walnut? 5. Is it hard to put a veneer on a guitar with a glued in neck? I'll stop there for now, five questions is enough for one post! I've just ordered Melvyn Hiscocks book, it seems to get mentioned a lot round here! I'm sure it'll answer a lot of other questions I have.
  4. Awsome guitar! I was thinking of using a veneer on a future project, how did you shape the corners where the veneer meets the side of the body? Router, sandpaper? Any chance of a close up of that part? Seriously nice dude!
  5. Thanks for the link Woodenspoke. The un treated door looks pretty cool! Nice tip about alchohol, I'll definately try that first.
  6. Hi Guys. I'm going to be staining Alder, i was told it mght stain a bit blotchy
  7. If I sell their trailer there might be an issue with borrowing their garage!
  8. I'm working out the logistics of setting up a wood working shop for myself, my problem is I don't have the space for one! My parents are close and have a garage so I could set up in there but I couldn't set up a permanent shop due to the place not being mine and a trailor is stored there most of the time (which I could move outside to the yard when working in the garage). Are any of you in a similar situation? I was thinking that I could use a fold away table to work on and I could just put all the tools away in a small cupbord in the garage. This way I would have a place to work and wouldn't take over thaeir garage!
  9. It's light hitting the body, I never noticed it looked like binding! No, I don't plan on adding binding. It's fingers crossed all the way about the figure in the wood! I guess we'll see soon.
  10. Can anyone recommend a pre stain wood conditioner? Thanks.
  11. The body and neck arrived today, not up to Warmoth standards but for the price I paid I can't complain too much! The body is seriously light, somwhere around 3lbs, is that right? The necks alright, I've seen worse. The fret end are a bit rough though, something to add to the to do list!
  12. Excellent. I do have a good mask I got cheap off ebay when I was planning on painting another guitar (grew to like the original finish so I never did paint it!) but I also have a beard, they don't really mix. The less fumes the better!
  13. Cool, thanks Quarter. How much fumes do these things give off?
  14. Thanks Rick, good news about the oil. Where can I get some small pieces os Alder and Maple to test the stain on? I'm in the UK.
  15. Has anyone used Birchwood Casey Walnut Stain? Any good? Would 3 fl oz be enough to finish a tele body and headstock? Also, is any one familiar with their Tru oil? Thanks.
  16. The bug to build a guitar has hit me again but after doing some maths it seems I'm going to have to wait to build from scratch because I can't afford to buy tools and wood/hardware! At the moment I'm greatfull that I have any money at all! I really want to give it a go but when you factor in space issues as well as money it's going to have to happen another day. At least it's something to work towards. So the plan is build a tele for around £200 without it being awfull! Something like this: I've manged to source an alder tele body for £41 and a maple strat neck for £48. I know the neck poket is slightly different on a tele to a strat but if I understand correctly the overhang of the 22nd fret should hide the small gaps pretty well. Am I right in thinking that the scale length is still ok, that it's not an issue? I want to stain the body a colour similar to walnut and then use some tru oil on it. Any recommendations? It's painted at the moment so I'll need to remove the paint somehow. Also, I was planning on staining the headstock to match the body. How difficult will it be to match the colours considering two different woods will be stained. How deep would the stain go? I only want the stain the face of the headstock, I don't want to see it on the sides. I'm also going to shape the heel of the body to aid with higher fret access, I'm nicking the idea from a Squire showmaster I bought cheap a few years ago. I've got a hacksaw and sand paper, there's not much wood to remove so I hope it'll be ok!!! That sounds so bad! Ideally I wouldn't have a pickup route at the neck but it's there so I had an idea but I'm keeping that a secret for now. I know, I 'm a tease!
  17. Hi Guys. I'm looking for somewhere in the UK that sells unfinished bodys and necks. Something decent without an extortionate price tag. I'm basicaly looking for an alternative to Warmoth closer to home (between the strength of the pound and shipping I just can't afford Warmoth products at the moment - I'm gutted!). Somewhere that can supply custom routing (or maybe no routing if there is no custom routing available). I've had a look around but could do with some help. Thanks.
  18. I'm considering trying to re finish a guitar with the plastikote crackle spraycans. How much fumes do these give off? I would have to dry it in my flat but I don't want to gas myself! I think they are acrylic paints. Thanks.
  19. Coooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Were you nervous? How many people get a chance to jam with their hero!
  20. The 80'sness of it had crossed my mind too ! Maybe the choice of colours would cobat that? I might find a random piece of wood to try it out on first. When I was a kid and learning to play the guitar I loved the crackle / splatter etc finishes! Proper Whitesnake / Def Leppard stadium rock look! Fond memories! Maybe I should add that the guitar I want to re finish is pointy headstock superstrat type from the late 80's!
  21. I'm looking forward to seeing this done. I've got a 1990 Desert Yellow Ibanez RG550, I love the colour and have taken a LOT af abuse from friends over the years about the colour but it's been worth it. Go for it!
  22. I'm aware it's a bit strange question !!!! Just thinking out loud. What I had in mind was a black base coat followed by antique gold (ragged) and then copper (ragged). Why shouldn't I tell Licht ? Was there a nasty decorating incident?
  23. Has any on tried the rag rolling technique for painting a guitar? For some reason I remembered a time when I was a teenager and doing some decorating for my parents and they had me rag rolling a room. I have no idea why this popped into my head! It then occured to me that you could try it on a guitar, maybe 2 or 3 colours? I'm trying to decide what to do a guitar of mine, I'm fighting the urge to go 5150! I'm assuming I'd need a fair bit of clear over the top of it.
