I love it ... Momo posts a guitar that isn't particularly innovative ... and it encourages you guys to start innovating!!
-
This one??
-
Interesting ... but I think the video would have been better with a presenter who was a little more confident and outgoing.
-
Nice work so far Floody. I'll be interested to see how this turns out
-
LMI has them ... don't know how prices compare though.
There's been a few posts on how to radius and/ or make a long radius block. Here's a few ... I recall there's been lots more:
-
That's some nice clean work there Huskey ... tell us a little more about it. And post a couple of the in progress pics.
Have you done a search on the finishing section of the forum?
-
From the look of it ... dowelling the left post and taking it back a mm or so will align the trem and help your intonation issues.
That will also give you a little more clearance from the block.
But from your description and pictures, I'd have thought you'd be having trouble pushing the trem down, not pulling it up? Can you see what it is hitting? The block seems close to okay ... is it the section under the whammy bar itself?

Dadovfor, As WezV rightly say's the pickups are directly mounted. That was really the reason the dragon ended up being laid up that way in the design, as you say, with pickup rings it wouldn't have worked out so well.
I've just learnt something (once again).
Very nice!
-
It's looking very axe-like ... the additional bevel work in your second drawing is my choice.
But I don't think you've got the right balance yet with the headstock.
-
Fantastic work Foggy!! I'll be keen to see what you can produce when you know what you're doing.
How does the placement of the dragon go once you have the pickup rings in place? It looks like you'll lose some of the claws and neck?
-
My immediate impression was of an over-sized guitar pick .
Good job.
It's always good to see builds that explore new directions. There'll be aspects of your build that will encourage some to take a similar path to yours, while for others it might not 'work' and send them off exploring in yet another direction.
... and both of those scenarios are great.
-
+1 on getting all your parts and planning things precisely.
You may not need to angle your neck if you're building along Fender lines or recessing a TOM ... but if you do need to angle, this diagram by Perry Ormsby pretty much says it all.
-
Frankly, this is all for fun, and if anyone takes it so seriously that they would rail on you for building a nicer guitar and going 'over budget' because they so badly want to win, well then they've got other problems. I say you build it to whatever spec you want to, and if you beat me, so be it. I'd rather have you in the competition and building what makes sense for you from a financial/business standpoint than not have you in the competition at all.
This should be like a cage fight ... the only rule is, there are no rules!!
Seriously ... I think that there needs to be some very loose design parameters in order to encourage the spirit of friendly competition, and so that what you each end up with can reasonably be called a Corvus ... but nothing too restrictive.
If someone spends $50 and another spends $1,000 overall ... does that matter? Won't that be something you'd simply note in your wrap-up thread? If someone has $40 pups and someone else has $400 will that win the "competition" for them? If someone uses the finest flamed timbers and someone does a Home Depot plywood build ... aren't we more interested in what they manage to create?
Anyway ... this is becoming an interesting thread and competition ... keep it up.
-
the real question... is it ugly enough to distract from avengers can opener
DANG!!!! I can't even catch a break in someone ELSE'S build thread! Y'all are killin' me.
i like the corvus
Being sarcastic isn't clever Wez ... it's cruel. Stop toying with John's emotions.
The Corvus is the single greatest blasphemy inflicted upon God's great garden and the sooner John accepts thats, the sooner he can start on the path to recovery.
-
Just trying to save the world one post at a time so as to distract you from actually building the thing!
And you know the sad thing Pete ... your efforts will go unrecognised and unrewarded.
Nelson Mandela, Mother Theresa? Sure ... c'mon up and grap yourselves a Nobel Peace Prize.
Kofi Annan, the Dalai Lama?? C'mon up as well ... there's prizes for you too!!!
But Pete ... saving the world from John's Corvus?!? Nothing!!!!!!
Where's the justice?!?
Who is making the bigger contribution here!?!?!?
The world has gone mad I tells ya!!!!
-
metz ... son #3 wants to know, did you spray the pickups and pick-guard? He likes ... a lot!!
pete ... my computer with Paint Shop has died ... but I can't look at this guitar without seeing a map of Australia! If I chop from the neck pickup to the top of the humbucker it will be a stylised Oz guitar.
Although, the scale and frets will be stuffed
-
G'day Chris ... Sydney Australia here ... welcome aboard!!
Now where's Crowella??
-
This was the first build for me and son #3 from a year or so back. It was supposed to be BC Rich inspired build but it ended up a bit Batman ... hence it's become the Batocaster.
It's slightly heavy and a little dangerous on the thighs ... but we were (and remain) pleased with it for a first build.
-
hehehe...OHHHH, THE HORROR!!!
Have you not considered the many design flaws in this thing...like the way it is supposed to hang from a strap, or the supposedly compact design yes the elongated head...sheeeeesh! Quick, put some tape around it....it's a crime scene!
Stop sitting on the fence pete ... tell john whether you like his idea or not!?!?
-
I think I may have a solution for you. I agree with Pete about your image. Along those lines, I suggest you take a picture of yourself facing forward and let people photoshop guitars in front of you. Who knows? We might even be able to make some stage costuming suggestions.
I think this is a stupid and immature idea dpm ... and Britney agrees with me!!
But Britney agrees with everything I say 'cos I tapped her.
Twice.

Hey, I've been trying to decide on a body shape for my guitar ...
My favorite shape and headstock:
You started the "Coolest Body Shapes" thread which attracted a lot of responses ... nothing came from that for you?
How about previous "Guitars of the Month" ... have you been back through those?
If you keep hanging around this place I doubt you're going to limit yourself to one build, so jump in and try building the guitar above. Once you've done that, you'll have a hundred ideas for things you want to do differently or better on your second build!
-
It's not a million miles from the design I did for my daughter's build ... but, there's very little under the sun that is truly new.
-
There’s no good reason at all that I can see. The guitar will no longer be a Peavey … and there’s many on here who would rightly argue that you shouldn’t represent it as such.
If you’re asking whether what you want to do is difficult or whether you’ll affect the structural / tonal qualities of the guitar … no, and no. Again, many here have done it … I’m sure some examples will be posted.
So go for it and come up with your own logo.

This was the iceman model that I always coveted...very short in production. I thought the committee who came up with the design did a very good job overall...the picture doesn't show the original long 3+3 headstck, but that was an important element dropped on later models.[
The reverse iceman is really doing it for me at the moment. It’s a build that I want to have a go at.
Which Router Bit?
in Solidbody Guitar and Bass Chat

You probably won't have much success finding a longer bit ... but see what's around.
You could:
Use the pattern bit with the bearing at the top and let it ride on your template ... which will probably make it half or three quarters of the way through the thickness of your body. Then remove the template and let the pattern bit ride along the freshly routed body. Depending on the length of the shank on the bit, you might be able to adjust the bit so it reaches the final half or quater.
Alternatively you could use a top bearing pattern bit to route half way through the body as above ... and then if you have a pattern bit with the bearing on the bottom, flip the body over and route it from the other side. The bearing will ride neatly on the bit you just routed using the template.
I've used the latter option with perfect results.
