  1. Don't be a conformist! Find your own sound! If that means using something other than an Ampeg, so be it! :D I'd love to get my hands on a nice Gallien-Kreuger rig myself. Right now I use a Trace Elliot Commando 100w (200w peak) head into a Behringer 2x10 cab. The Behringer is awesome for its price ($199 or thereabouts). I just wish I had gotten the paper cones instead of the "fancy" aluminum cones.

  2. If I'm not mistaken, you can get EMGs with the wiring kits prea-ssembled.

As for the tools, TomN's list is a bit more than you really need. Here is a very basic list:

    Soldering iron

Wire nippers (which you can also use to strip wires)

Needle nose pliers, although not that necessary unless you are dealing with circuit boards

    Solder (60% tin/40% lead)

Wire strippers, "helping hands", and a hemostat are not needed at all. With the soldering iron, the higher wattage the better, especially if you have to solder to the back of a pot (it takes a lot of energy to heat up all that metal).

  3. To be fair, neither of those diagrams will accurately allow you to figure out the action on the guitar without further information (i.e. the angle of the fretbard in relation to the camera).

Oh, and ask and ye shall receive:

What's the difference between a drummer and a drum machine?

You only have to punch the information into the drum machine once.

  4. I prefer metric over imperial except when it comes to temperature. Not that I don't like degrees celsius, its just that I *know* what 100 degrees F feels like, and thinking that room temperature is somewhere around 25 degrees C is just odd. However, there is no comparison when it comes to science -- SI all the way!

  5. Wrong. I DID look at the closeups, and even as a non-expert I can see some serious flaws. I mean AMATEUR flaws. Sorry, Mick, but I absolutely do NOT have to put him in that same category. If you want to buy that he's the real deal, that's fine. You're allowed to. But I think you've missed some very telling mistakes. Mick, there's a difference between "wrong arguments" and "arguments I don't agree with."

greg, please show us some examples.

Seriously. The only thing I noticed was where he dyed his inset logo on his headstock, the dye bleed into the surrounding grain. Other than that, I couldn't see any obvious flaws.

  6. I guess I will just have to buy that Squier Showmaster neck and hope that it won't be too thick for my liking.

I'm also considering the idea of making the fretboard a bit longer and installing a few more frets. This would suck because I hate to do any neck work.

I also don't know if this is a common practice or if it would work at all.

If you are going to do that, you might as well just build the entire neck. The fretboard/fret work for me is by far the most difficult part of the whole neck building process. Since you can't just "extend" the fretboard, you would have to replace the entire fretboard.

  7. A lot of cheap pickups probably sound not-so-great because they were originally in a cheapo plywood guitar. Put 'em in a solid body, and you might be pleasantly surprised. In my experience, cheap guitar pickups are far better than cheap bass pickups (unfortunately, as I am mostly a bass player).

  8. rammstein is thrash(simplistic though it is)

Hmm... Rammstein is nowhere near thrash. Nowhere near it. I label them as Industrial Metal... Metal for the obvious reason, and industrial for their EXTENSIVE use of keyboard/synthesizers/etc. They just don't have an ounce of a thrash sound to my ears.

  9. In this day in age, I think the most innovation is going to be in the way electronic devices are employed in guitars. I think that in the past 100 years or so we have more or less perfected the balance between ergonomics and aesthetics (anything "new" from here on will be mainly aesthetic trends and fashions, rather than true innovations).

Also, by basing a new instrument on an existing one, you kind of limit your possibilites. One thing that comes to mind is the motograter that the band Motograter (hmm.. wonder where they got the name!) used instead of a bass. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motograter#The_instrument

You could always try some cool things with PVC!

  10. IMO, Tool should never be considered "mainstream." Maybe this is a bit of elitism emerging in me, but if you were to actually look into Tool songs and their meanings, etc, you would see how they are much deeper than "mainstream" music.

As far as my favorite genres: metal, classic rock, jazz, fusion, classical, etc.

Some of my favorite bands: Metallica, Led Zep, Tool, A Perfect Circle, Meshuggah, Opeth, Primus, Deftones, Finger Eleven,

Isis, Jamiroquai, The Mars Volta, NIN, Rammstein, Rage Against the Machine, Rob Zombie, Rush, and Tenacious D.

    no screaming in Opeth?!?

At least Opeth isn't constant screaming, and the singer has one hell of a set of pipes!
