I would say that adding humbuckers (maybe get your tele routed for 'em) would help emensly (sp?). I just find it hard to get a heavy sound from tele pickups...

If it is your first project, go with the fixed radius.

You could always ask him. He might be able to come up with the extra cash for some better pickups...

Interesting idea, but how would you adjust the volume? And how would you keep that volume once it is set so you dont have to keep your hand (or other body part) at the same place the whole time.

I would suggest LMI since they have a larger selection of woods. They will also slot and radius the boards to whatever you want (well, they have a large selection of radii and scales).

I bought a Pau Ferro fretboard for my bass, pre-slotted and radiused, and I am very happy with it.

Active pickups merely have fewer windings (i.e. to reduce noise, etc). Thus, the output on the pickups are much lower. This requires you to have a powered preamp to boost the signal before it gets to the amp.

This is why they are called active pickups, because they require an active preamp. You can also use an active preamp with passive pickups as it lets you boost frequencies as well as cut them, passive preamps can only cut frequencies.

How are bartolinis wired? Are they passive or active? Do they need a preamp? etc...

My Bartolini came with a paper that tells how to wire it (series, parallel, one coil, other coil, etc). My pickups are passive, but I imagine you could get active ones. The place where I got mine (www.bestbassgear.com) only had passives though. As for a preamp, I will be using a simple 3-band preamp that I found on an opamp data sheet.

I bought a Bartolini passive Music Man Pickup for $90...

Since it is a bolt on, just shim the neck until the action is how you like it. I hear than veneer makes great neck shims.

Try LMI <http://www.lmii.com/> for fingerboards and Exotic Woods <http://www.exoticwoods.com/> for body wood. Exotic Woods sells fingerboards but LMI has a larger selection of fret slotting and radius sanding options.

When I was gonna buy that truss rod, I was just going to use a 3/8" bit and then hand-sand 1/16" off the top and bottom to accomodate the nuts.

But then I found the LMI truss rod. Its the same rod, but it only requires a 3/8" slot.
