John,
AWESOME. I'm just waiting for the neck building threads..
-
Not being rude... You're new, so you don't know. I've had this discussion many times, and I'm not interested in having it again right now. Do an advanced search with my username and a couple of key words if you're really all that interested.
Actually, I sorta knew that. I've hung around for while without posting..
I always enjoy seeing new projects popping up here and you being a real busy bee makes me green of envy. I dig your projects thoroughly and at the sametime I'd wish you'd get dirty with the neck business too.
All that said with humbleness and respect in mind.. (and hopefully precieved that way too.. )
-
John, you are catching up to Gibson and Fender at the rate you're going..
And my questiong to you is; When are ya gonna give making necks a chance?.. I mean, it obviously cant be impossible to do..
-
ummm, all bolt ons are like that...
No. Look at this picture:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/comm...olt_on_neck.jpg
The shape of the neck goes closer to the heel, whlie on the Retrotron it looks to be about an inch or so off.
-
I guess I'll be the first to ask - why didn't you shape the neck where it meets the heel of the body?..
..also.. it looks kinda funny in a cartoonie-sorta-way..
-
The workers at Gibson used to wear those hats. Every once in a while, someone would accidentally sit on one, then they'd use that as a pattern for a new body design.
.. and that's how the Corvus was born.

Can you veneer the headstock with the formica aswell?
About the back of the guitar, I'd try and match it with a color which is in the formica, preferably the most dominant one. Black on the back like j.pierce says might work, but that is probably gonna go against the white pickguard. Maybe you could try a persplex pickguard? (or a tinted one and match the back to the tint.. )
-
Yea, It looks like your friend is gonna be real happy... and if he aint, I bet someone on the forum would be..

While I understand everything you posted, I'm at a loss to understand -why- you posted it, you're not asking for help, you're not showing pics of a project...why bother posting about it at all then, ...what is the reason for this thread?
+1
Why not post pics of it "before" or even progresspics?
-
Peter - Alright! No worries then. Lookin' forward for more pics and perhaps soundclips!
Edit: Any thoughts on what pickups you're gonna use?
-
Comic Sans? Do you mean a font? PB are my initials, which I signed by hand, digitised, and cut by hand. No fonts used. What font would you recommend. Times New Roman?
I'm sorry man, to me the letters on the "PB" logo looked very similar to the "Comic Sans" font. To clarify; The Tribalesque-flame-thing ( which is really cool ) and the "PB" are not complementing eachother, that's what made me react in the first place. I realize now that I completely douched-up and should've shut up.
Hope that made some sense and.. again, I'm sorry!

That's so awesome, looks like it's from Stewmac almost except that if it were you'd pay a LOT more for it. Would be great if you could post some in-use pics of it.. I'd love that and I'm sure many others are too!

Hey David,
Just got one suggestion, I'd say the string holes should follow the edge of the guitars "crotch".. know how I mean?
Nice work though, gonna follow this one.

Uh wow... what happened to it?

My pups are Gretch, the ones going on consignment are Artec.
For the p/g, it'll be w/b/w. I'm going to do something strat-like in that it'll hold both pups and the electronics. I'm still working on the exact shape, but it'll be retro-styled. It'll cover more real estate than the dano's for no other reason than I'll need to have the whole of both pups surrounded with it.
How bout' some chromed Art-Deco-like pickguard that sorta compensates for the chrome binding (or 50's countertop-thingy)?
-
I did the secont test block yesterday and I have the binding router issues all figured out. Here's the process: Tape the piss out of it, then run it through the router backwards. It's just that easy!
I got the face & back on the other two bodies. I'm currently working on the sides of the neck before I get to the body sides. I'll post some pics of these if you like, but I thought since it's more of what you've already seen, it was fairly pointless.
Hopefully, I'll be able to have the sides all glued on sometime this week and ready for the binding.
.. that guitar is like supreme tackyness but in an awesome way..Thanks. That's part of what I was going for - tastefully horrible. If I were somehow able to put some chrome countertop trim on it, it'd be perfect.
Yeah, some sorta chrome binding all-over would be cool.
.. are you going for a Danelectro clone or doin' somehing "original" (In terms of pickups and pickguard..)
-
Friggin' awesome.
Does the copper-top affect tone?
-
This is truly an awesome build. Keep the updates comin' !

Are you sure the neck will fit that pocket you already made?
-
Poplar neck?.. isn't poplar a very soft wood?..
-
Here's the body cut out. There's still a lip around the bottom because my bit doesn't reach far enough. I'm debating whether to bevel this off with a spokeshave or do binding on the back as well. Any thoughts?

Why not just get a routerbit with the guide bearing on the bottom? ... or a round-over bearing bit?
Cool shape btw!

I cut them on a CNC mill using the cad data that MzI supplied.
Are the curves polylines or a bunch of straight lines?
I made my templates in cad with polylines worked out fine, the NC-program was 16k+ lines.. thank god for CAD..

Howd'ya make them?
