  1. Thanks Guitarfrenzy & swirlslave , I checked out the Stewmac site and I will follow that when I route the body. Unfortunatly we cant get Robo Sanders down here in Australia (like a lot of things) but I have a couple of spindle sanders that fit into the drill press which I might try to modify to make and fit some kind of guide to it. (What do they use on the Robo Sander as a guide?) My first feeling is this is the way to go. Regards Greg
  2. Yes, I was going to glue the bit back on and in hinesight probably should have. The neck is made of rock maple and a rosewood fretboard and it has really come up well for the first attempt (except the bloody headstock) I am now a bit nervous about routing another one but the headstock on this one looks like s***t so I dont have much choice!!!!. Anyway I might sand the ends of the next one with a spindle sander but I am very concerned about routing the body because the same thing could happen.
  3. Yes ,I was using a template. I was taking it easy and cutting about 1mm.I was feeding against the rotation of the router. Everything was fine till I got to the end grain on the headstock and then it basicaly split the headstock with the grain and tore off about 3/4 inch (16mm)
  4. I started making the neck of my guitar today and all was going great until I went to route the headstock shape. As soon as I got around the end grain the router broke off the top part of it. I think you could call it tear out -big time! I kind if made something out of it but its not what I want. The rest of it looks ok except the headstock. How do I stop this happening again.I am using a router table and the router bit has the bearing on bottom of it (not the collet end) I was thinking about using a sander on the headstock next time but I am a bit concerned about the body. Again thanks in advance Greg
  5. Thanks for all the replies. After shopping around and no luck,I walked into a hardare shop for something else and as I was walking out ,there it was ,a 5.5mm router bit. For anybody in Australia thats having trouble finding these, they are made by Carbatec -T Cut and cost about $25.00 AU. I was told by a lot of expert tool shops that they were not available. I have cut the slot and its a nice neat fit. Thanks Greg
  6. I need to route out a neck for a Stewmac hotrod truss rod but I am having trouble getting hold of a 7/32mm (5.5mm) router bit in Australia It looks as though Stewmac has had these specially made. What are my options apart from getting one from Stewmac ? I can get a 4mm or a 6mm down here. How accurate do these need to be? TIA Greg
  7. Hi, Finally I am about to route the trench for a " Stewmac Hot Rod" truss rod which will have the adjustment at the body end under the PU. Should I make the length of the cut exactly the same as the length of the truss rod blocks so it cant move back and forwards in the trench or should I give it a bit of clearance ? Should I bring the adjusting screw (hex screw) out beyond the end of the neck into the body or leave it flush with the end of the neck? tia Greg
  8. Hi, I have a friend going to the US (from Australia) shortly and I was going to get him to pick up a Fender 50th Aniversary Delux Strat for me if it works out ecomomical. Down here they are about $3500.00 AUD or probably about $2600.00 USD. Could somebody recommend some shops around the (West Coast) LA area where I can get a price from, or if somebody could let me know what is a good price for one? Prices down here are not really negotiable as they are a bit hard to get. Also does anybody have any input to taking guitars on Aircraft. Do they get knocked around or can you specify what they are so they look after them. I know these are broad questions but i would appreciate any help. Regards Greg
  9. Hi. What is the reason for having the neck rounded at the neck pocket. Does it make it stronger of something or is it OK to cut it straight accross. TIA Greg
  10. The info sheet from stewmacs interesting, and is what I was kind of going to build but it looks pretty easy with the drill press too!
  11. How do you drill the headstock for the truss rod adjustment on a strat style neck, I mean what type of jig etc do you use? Any photos or links. I was going to try to make up a kind of small horizontal drill press, but I thought it would help for some input. TIA Greg
  12. Hey Guys, How many of you's stuffed up your first project.I mean completly stuffed up a body or a neck etc? I am just curious. Greg
  13. Did this work OK ? Its a good idea .... How accurate do these templates need to be.? I am going to give this idea a shot as I have just screwed up one routing it out with the Dremel.. I should have never trusted the plastic router base/guides to be accurate. There seems to be a lot of flex in it! Greg
  14. Hi What do you guys usually do first -- Do all your routing before cutting out the body or cut out the body then do the routing? Regards Greg
  15. Thanks, That makes more sense! I should have had a better look at Stewmacs site. Do you route the whole cavity the same depth? or are the "ears" shallower? Thanks Greg
  16. Hi again, In all the books that I have the Humbucker template shape has the 2 "tabs" at either end. I had a look at Stew macs and I see that theirs are just a straight rectangle with no "tabs" on each end. Which is the right one.?I know the "tabs" are for the mountings but why dont Stewmacs have them. How do you guys route these out? Do you route the main part then the mounting cavity or all as one. Thanks Greg
  17. Check out Http:// www.customs.gov.au I made this enquiry to customs some time ago and they told me that anything over $250 by sea or air freight or $1000 by post will incure import duties. They told me 5%+10% GST + fees. Check out their site its pretty informative. Regards Greg
  18. Hi Perry, I am over in (busy) Sydney.
  19. Thanks Guys, Doesn't that make things a bit easier.I could not find Plexiglass down here in Aus, but had no problems with perspex. Next question - Would 6 mm (1/4 inch) be too thin for templates? Regards Greg
  20. Hi Whats the difference between "Perspex" and "Plexiglass" or am I just dumb and they are the same? What thickness would I need for templates? Thanks Greg
  21. Thanks for all your help & info. Looks like I have saved some bucks to buy something else? Gregw
  22. Gee both of the replies make me start thinking I may be wasting some money? I am going to use 009 - 042 strings. Everthing I have read seems to say that the nut slotting is a critical part of the project ,so that is why I was going to spend the money on the files, but the needle files or (feeler guages) would be a lot cheaper if they do the same job! Thanks Greg
  23. G,day all I want to order some tools etc from Stewmac and was wondering what size nut files I should buy? I realize its a very broad question but this is the first project so I dont want to buy the full set. Any other options ? thanks Greg
  24. Thanks guys for all your input. The truss rod I am going to use for my first neck is the Stewmac hot rod and the channel is straight ,but I was interested in how you would rout out the deeper part in the centre with other truss rods. Great info in this forum.I have learnt heaps just from reading the discussions .Its amazing how many people build or are interested in guitars . Thanks again Cheers Greg
  25. Hi When cutting a truss rod channel in a neck,do you use some sort of jig to get it deeper in the centre or just keep adjusting the router as you go. TIA. Greg
