  1. It would have been a decent post... but then he started talking about his ideal world...... :D

Any ways, back on topic. As much as I like the sound of Marshals, a good amount of what you are paying for is the name IMO. But if you have the money and don't mind spending, I would say that is the way to go.

  2. Hey guys, just a few questions, I would have searched but my computer is so messed up right now.

1:What is the average oz.'s of MOP used to inlay a fretboard, with inlays about the size of a quarter and enough left to do a 2 quarter sized inlay on the headstock? How thick should I get them (I think the choices are 0.040", 0.050", 0.060").

2: For finishing my guitar, which will have an alder body with a quilted maple top and a maple neck, I plan on ordering the following from ReRanch: Alcohol based Green and Black dyes, 2 cans of clear Nitro, the 3M "Finesse it II" they recomend for polishing, and the 3M wet/dry sand paper kit. I'm going to do the stain black, sand back, stain green with a black burst (which I'll use a can of black Krylon to do). Am I missing anything?

This is my first attempt at finishing a guitar, so even if I know all there is to know I still feel like I'm missing something. Any help is great, thanks.

  3. Thanks for all of the replies. Jefm, I don't understand exactly what the 3-way switch is for, unless it is to put the humbuckers in parallel, but how then would the on/off/on switches effect that? I'm thinking I might just stick with my first plan, but with push-pull pots with phasing for each pickup like on the Red Special.

  4. Thanks guys. I will e-mail Carvin and see what they can do. I liked GM's idea about sanding the nut, so I'll give that a thought. As for the fretwire, I guess the only way to find out what I like is to give it a try (unless someone knows what size PRS uses....?). And of course I had to forget one thing. Gotoh Schaller-Syle tuners, anybody have any experience with these? Sorry for all the questions, but I don't want to buy something that ends up being crap, only to know later on that someone could have told me to get something different.

  5. Thanks, I'm sure when I have the stuff I need in front of me I'll have at least a small idea about what you just said :D . Can you explain to me why you don't think I'll get the best sound choices from this setup? I was looking for a setup that allowed me the most tonal possibilities, and I settled with this one because I thought thats what I would get. I'll look into the switch-less setup you talked about. This is going to be more of a studio guitar, so I don't mind having all of the switches though.

  6. I have searched high and low for the wiring schematic I need, so if someone can help me out here it would greatly appreciated.

    Hum/Single/Hum Setup.

    Vol/Tone for Hums

    Vol/Tone for Single

    On/off/coil tap for each hum

    On/off for the single

I am very unknowledgable when it comes to electronics, but I am very willing to learn. I have not yet found the pickups I want, so suggestions are welcome. Also, when I am looking at pickups is there any special thing I need to make sure it has in order to work for my setup? And this may sound stupid (we all gotta learn somehow) but what does a phase switch do?

  7. I am just about ready to order all my parts for my first guitar, but there are just two things I still need to know. First thing is fretwire - I plan on getting stew-mac's Medium/High fretwire, is this good? Or is there something better? And second thing is the fretboard - I want a 15" radius on my fetboard, so I can use Carvin's graphite nut and TOM bridge. My problem is I cannot seem to find a 15" radius sanding block. Does anyone know where I could get one? Or could I just use stew-mac's 14" or 16"? The "Make your own radius sanding block" tutorial looks like a major pain, but if thats what I gotta end up doing...... Any insults, threats, helpful comments, or answers are welcome :D . Thanks.
