  1. Hi. I want to finish my rg550 with a matted/stain stain. First off, is there any difference between matte and satin? Second, will polycrilic protect the guitar, or should i use some other matte/satin clearcoat to finish it? If so, what would be my best option. Thanks. Neal
  2. Maybe i should explain the problem a little more thoroughly....i got this guitar, and the first 5 frets would not stop buzzing. No matter what i did, id always have major buzz, and the sound would get cut on the bottom string completely if i played any lower than the 3rd fret. I then tried to file down the frets with an ordinary file and compounded my problem. It either needs a really good level or a refret, so does anyone have any ideas on how to get this done cheap? Thanks
  3. Im not sure if i want to sell it just yet......i want to see about how much time, effort, and money would have to be invested in order to make this a decent machine. I will consider selling though, as i did just buy a new guitar. Ill post it on the selling thread if i ever decide to. But it's gonna be a while before i figure it out. Thanks anyway. Neal
  4. I was at a flea market last year and i purchased a cheap harmony les paul copy for 50 bucks because it had a dimarzio in it, and something that could quite possibly be a gibson hum., but probably isn't. It also had grover tuners, and i thought for 50 bucks it would be a summer project. Well now it's almost a year and i decided that i want to get it back in playable condition. However, the frets are really shot. It might just need recrowning, maybe a whole refret. If anyone on this board wants some practice, feel free to email me.....nealgolf88@hotmail.com. If not, does anyone have any suggestions. It's not worth putting any money into, but its a waste to have it sitting there. I dont need any of the parts, and i found out that theyre not in the best shape, but with a refinish and a new fret job, it might be decent. So does anybody have any ideas? I really don't want to get everything needed to level the frets, but maybe someone knows where i can get this kind of thing done dirt cheap? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Neal
  5. Hi. Sorry if I have been pestering you guys. Maybe i should fill you in on my status before i pick your brains for any bit of relevant information. I just bought an rg550 that has a factory black paint job that is scratched and chipped beyond my tolerance. I've decided to refinish. I want to give it a bright red, matted satin stain. Before i do this, i may or may not burn it, depending on the quality of the grain. Anyway, over this matted stain i want to put the original black pickguard, cover the pickups with red bobbin toppers, and replace hte knobs and switch covers to red ones. Anyway, I want to know what putting on a black stain will do to the finish. I have seen lots about putting on a black stain, and I dont know what it would do. Please fill me in on any info. Thanks. Neal
  6. Litchfield Custom.....got any opinion on my post....above his prs? Thanks. Neal
  7. could you do this with satin polycrilic and get a satin finish? Im looking to do a burnt stained red rg550 and was wondering if i could just tint the satin polycrilic and put on a couple coats using only the tinted polycrilic as both a base layer and protective coat. Should i just get some bright red stain and put polycrilic over that? I want the same sort of satin/matte finish like on the jem7bsb, but i want it to be red. Also, with the food coloring, i could make it just the shade i want. Should i just tint some polycrilic red, stain with that, and put some untinted polycrilic over that? Thanks for your help. Neal
  8. I put this on jemsite and someone said that they did it with just a bic lighter with some sucess. Any thoughts on this? I think it would take a while, but it might work pretty well. Neal.
  9. Is there any other way (other than using a heat gun) to get a burnt finish like the one on the jem bsb. I don't have an electric heat gun and dont feel like paying 30 bucks if there is a cheaper way to do it. Has anyone on this board ever done it without the gun. If so, how? Please note that i am a little wary of anything that could go seriously awry and burn up the body. How dangerous would it be to take a flammable liquid and a lighter? Thanks for any help. Neal
  10. Does anybody know anything about the quality of the grain on the rg550's? How would a yellow stain look in you expert's opinions? Thanks. Neal
  11. I am debating doing a burnt stained finish on an rg550 and was wondering if anyone knows where i could get ahold of a good graphic stencil to burn into the guitar. I would need something that is not so detailed that it can't be burnt in. Im pretty much looking for any sort of template that is premade and that i could put onto an rg550. Thank you for any info. Neal
  12. Hi. I am thinking about doing a burnt stained finish on an ibanez rg550 and was wondering if anyone had any tips on colors that would look good. Is there any such thing as a fluorescent stain. The guitar is going to have a black pickguard, and ill get bobbin toppers to match the color of the stain. I like fluorescence.....but ive never seen fluorescent stain. Also, is there any types of wood that would be damaged by a burnt stain finish(particularly burning). Please help out with any sort of information that pertains to this topic that isnt in the tutorial. Thank you.
  13. Hi. I am looking to finish an rg550 with a bright yellow finish, including the hadstock, and then putting the chrome stickers from universaljems on before clearcoating. what is the most durable paint and clearcoat to use. What is the best primer. I need to use spraypaint, and was also wondering how many cans of each to use? Please respond with any info. Thanks. Neal
