  1. wes, how much for the invader? what do you have for duncan designed? sjaguar, how much for the 81(edit: you said you have 2, but one might not work, any more details?)? thanks all. Neal
  2. Ok, i know what you guys say are necessary tools, by using the search function. However, i want to know what i should get. I have access to a bandsaw, and i own a drill press and a table saw. I plan on purchasing a router, dremel, sander, and some rasps/files. What type of router should i buy(plunge/standard)? What is the best cheap router i can find? What type of sander is best suited for guitars? I already have a random orbital, and i might have some others. What are some good brands? And what should i get in terms of rasps/files. thanks, and i hope i can enjoy this hobby/profession as much as you guys do. Neal
  3. ok, well i just took another look at the diagram, and it actually appears to be wired correctly(i must have been holding it the wrong way or something), so i will leave it be. But thanks for the suggestions on wire, ill pick some up at radio shack soon. Neal
  4. Hi. I'm building a guitar. I have an old dimarzio neck humbucker, but i also need a bridge pickup. I am also thinking about getting a matched set, or maybe even two seperate pickups, as this one isnt in the best condition. So if you have any pickups for sale at all, please post and ill reply if i'm interested. Thanks. Neal
  5. Oh, and it is the capacitor between two pots (i am assuming they are volume and tone being connected, but i'm not sure) if thats any help. Thanks a lot for your guidance. Neal
  6. Hi. I am building myself a guitar, and want to replace the capacitors and wire on this harness i have, because it is not wired correctly, and i want to get a fresh set of caps in as well. It is a les paul copy harness. First, what type of capacitor will i need? Second, what is the best type of wire to use for guitar electronics? Thanks. Neal
  7. Thanks for the link, but it doesnt really answer my question. Ill try to explain a little mor. I pulled the electronics harness out of a cheap lp copy to put in my custom guitar. The neck pickup has already been replaced with a dimarzio. I now want to replace the bridge pickup. The current wire seems to be eithe single or double stranded, but it is NOT four-conductor. What would i have to do in order to replace the bridge pickup with a four-conductor pickup? Thanks. Neal
  8. Hi. I am a complete and total electronic newbie. I am trying to build a guitar, and need to get a bridge humbucker. What is the difference between 4-conductor pickups and regular pickups? The neck pickup is a very old dimarzio that only has 2 wires, and the harness i am using used to have a pickup that appears to only have a single wire, maybe 2. It is an old harmony les paul copy, and i am transferring the electronics to my built guitar, but i want to switch out the bridge pickup. Any help? Thanks. Neal
  9. Well, i figure i can post in this thread now, feels great. I am building a rip-off of an esp f200. It will be an almost-neck-thru. Instead of having the wings glued to the neck, the body is going to have a channel routed all the way through the front for the neck to drop into, but it will be the full length of the body, and will be the same thickness as the neck itself, so the neck truly runs through the body. The body is going to be made out of lacewood, and the neck and fretboard out of padauk. I ordered the wood from wood-ply lumber in NY, www.woodply.com, but it hasnt come in yet, so ill tell y'all about my level of satisfaction later. I am putting grover tuners on(had em laying around the house), it will have a graphite nut with an lmii truss rod. The bridge is a tuneomatic w/ stop tailpiece. Chrome bell knobs, and les paul wiring, as i already have the harness from an LP ripoff. I'll fill you guys in on the rest later, but it will have an old Dimarzio in the neck, and ill see what i can find on the 'bay for a bridge PU. The body will be dyed blue, and the padauk dyed an even deeper red to get some real contrast. Oh, and i will be putting blue LED's for the front dots(no side dots on this one). This is going to be my first guitar, and i'm jumping in headfirst, so we'll see what happens. I did buy some cheap poplar for a body, cheap ash for a neck, and cheap maple for a fingerboard just to get some practice before i work on the lacewood and padauk. Ill keep you guys informed, maybe ill post some pics along the way. Neal
  10. yeah, i never liked the neck, and it wasn't screaming quality, so i got rid of it, but now i miss the emg-hz(i know they suck, but i liked it) and i really want the sustainer back. Whatever. Neal
  11. ibanez rg120 ibanez rg550 harmony les paul saga strat 1979 fender pbass ibanez sdgr bass used to have a fernandes revolver w/ sustainer that i really miss now, and the 1979 fender bass is walking out the door soon. Neal
  12. am i wrong in saying that the torres kits ARE the saga kits. It appears that way to me, but maybe i'm just mistaken. Neal
  13. Is lacewood smooth enough to make a guitar neck out of, or would it take lots of work and grain-filling? I am making a guitar out of lacewood, and i am choosing between padauk for a neck or making it an all-lacewood guitar. Lacewood is really beautiful, and in order to get some contrast, i would stain the neck and body differently, but my real question is, is lacewood suitable for making a neck? Thanks for your help. Neal
  14. you know you want it......feel the power of the maple.......join the maple side.......the force is with you
  15. well, i just had to cancel the single bid because the buyer was from italy and italian customs do not permit importation of musical instruments......bastards. Well, it's been relisted, please bid if you feel inclined. Neal
  16. thyanks vankirk, but im a step ahead of you, as i read this before i posted. And yes, i do play, i've been playing for 2 years and am slowly starting to catch on. I like acoustics, but mine is giving me problems, and it's not worth the restoration efforts. I was thinking along the lines of a washburn/takamine/alvarez/yamaha, because i can find models that sell new for around 500 for less than 200 on ebay, and they've all recieved fairly good reviews. Any other suggestions? Neal
  17. thing is, i dont really have a price range. If an acoustic is really worth saving up for(500 bucks) i'll do it. If there's a good one for 200, maybe ill buy quicker. Right now there's a washburn that lists for around 500 on ebay B.I.N for 1oo. What do you guys think? Neal
  18. Anyone have an opinion on the best acoustic for the price? Thanks. Neal
  19. ok, after doing lots of looking around and pricing and such, i have decided to totally change what i was going to do in terms of wood, and now i am planning to do a 2 pc. lacewood body with a padauk neck and a lacewood fingerboard and red/orange led's(depending on what the color of the padauk is. My question is, would it be easier, instead of doing a neckthru, to make the neck run through the body an inch deep, almost like a deep tenon routed all the way through the top of the guitar. This way, i figure it will be easier to shape the neck as it will be much closer to final thickness than a 2" thick piece of wood. So, instead of being a true neck-thru, i would have a 1" deep tenon running all the way down the top of the guitar for the neck, which at the joint with the body will be 1" thick. Or would it be easier to do a neck-thru? Thanks for your help. Neal
  20. Hey, you stole my idea I was thinking either mahogany or walnut w/ maple too, but i'll do a little more research and pricing before i make any set plans. The one thing i was worried about is the fact that i'm putting in led's, and it would be good to match it to the color of the body, but maybe i could get white ones. Thanks. Neal
  21. Ok. I have decided to go with the f200, but i have decided not to draw out a full set of plans because i'm lazy. I'm just going to chop wood and see what happens Actually, i just downloaded a cad drawing and printed it out full-size. Either today or tomorrow i will start working with some cherry scraps with the school bandsaw. I have some assistance from a teacher. This weekend i am going out to buy the real wood for the guitar. Going to a local hardwood store, what can i expect to pay for all the wood needed to make a guitar? I want to do a natural finish, so it cant be too bad looking, but i'm not doing any kind of exquisite top on this one. So basically i just need some good quality wood, at a reasonable price. Anyone have a rough estimate/wood suggestion? Also, besides the what mistakes to avoid thread and the tutorials and obvious stuff (time, patience, luck, insane amount of skill/devotion ability to turn wood into guitar), what is some advice to give to a newbie. My plans are as follows: 1.buy wood 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,etc... build guitar 10. choose color to stain guitar 11.buy all necessary supplies 12. finish guitar 13. put led's in guitar (my endeavor) 14. play guitar sound good, beside the fact that i skipped lots of stuff? Thanks for your help, it really is appreciated. Neal
  22. Well, the CAD teacher at my school is letting me use the CNC milling machine after school. Because i need to have all the milling done by the end of the school year, i'm using blueprints from guitarbuild.com. The only two that i found that meet all my needs are an esp f200 and a flying V. I will be deciding which one i will do soon. I like the shape of the f200, but the v seems easier, so i might go with the v. I think they both look pretty cool. Anyway, there are a couple things that might help to know before starting out. First off, are pickup routes always the same height for standard humbuckers, or is there lots of variation. As long as i have the measurements to one piece, i can dimension all the rest using that as a reference point. So, if there is a standard routing depth, can somebody be nice enough to tell me what it is? Or is there any other measurement that is constant on almost all guitars? Thanks for your help. Neal
  23. there we're lots of great ones this month. I liked the workhorse jem and the airbrushing on the sg, and i liked the 31 fret guitar and darren's custom, but the two that i fell for were the sg and the bass. It took me a while, but i finally went with the bass. I just hope my project can come out nearly as nice as any of these entries. Neal
