  1. I think I'll go with the testors idea. As for clearcoating it when you're done, is there any compatibility issues with that nitrocellulose clearcoat spray that Reranch sells? What did you use for clearcoating it? [G]
  2. Do they come pre-slotted? How is that better than simply turning the original around?
  3. Hey guys! I ws wondering about the nut on the lefty neck I'm taking off a lefty MIM Strat. I'm putting it on a right handed body and want to know what to do about the nut. Does it just pop off and I can reverse it? What tools should be used to accomodate this? Or do I even have to reverse the nut? (I haven't looked at it yet, it's on it's way.) Thanks for all your expert opinions!!! [G]
  4. Thanks for all the input, fellas! I was wondering though - is the auto paint (acrylic enamel) compatible with the nitro clearcoat spray that Reranch sells for guitars? Also, I have a shoreline gold guitar right now. Would it be best to sand it down to the wood, then spray it with a white basecoat of something then the metalflake gold? Or just sand off the clearcoat and spray right on top of the shorline gold then clearcoat it? Thanks again for all your help!
  5. I'm doing a guitar project and would like to use some hotrod paints in aerosol cans if possible. Anyone know of a good source online to buy them?
  6. Chunk-out with that extra low "B" string like Korn/The Cure/Steve Vai! There's a couple of blems on the guitar, so I'm selling it really cheap. It sounds really awesome- DeArmond pickups! (very similar to a '58 Gibson SG) It's on eBay now so hurry: DeArmond 7-String "SG"
  7. This is a really cool color you don't see on a Fender. It's a Jay Turser Strat-style guitar. Great sounding, real cheap and AWESOME finish! I have it on eBay right now: Check it out!
  8. I have several guitars for sale on my website
  9. I recently bought two Squiers to take apart and use for parts: One was an Affinity and one was a Squire Standard. The Affinity I think was made in China. It seemed like a "toy" guitar made from plywood. It was thinner and sounded pretty shabby. I would stay away from them. The Squier Standard, which I got in a really cool gold color, played great! Real alinico pickups and everything! I would recommend that one as a first/beginner guitar. the gold one was a closeout, so it's cheaper than the other models... I forget where I got it. Check out Musiciansfriend or Music123.com. Good luck! [G]
  10. Hi guys! I know my scale length on my strats is 25.5". How come when I measure it comes out to 25.25"? Am I measuring from the nut to the exact place where the screws are in the bridge? I have to get this right befoire I start cutting and drilling my body blank. Which leads me to the next set of questions: Having never used a router before, I tried to practice "freehand" on some practice wood. Of course, I couldn't cut a straight line with any templates, but I don't know if I'm cutting too slow or fast or whether I'm supposed to go left to right or up and down. Is there a tutorial on "how to route for dummies"? Also, I have the 1/2" and 3/8" bits, which size bit do I need to round the edges of the guitar? My books don't really specify?! Thanks for all your help! I'll be taking pictures of the progress of my project soon and posting them. George
  11. Actually, I bought the Squires just to use the neck and some of the parts. I bought 2 of them. An Affinity, which is made in China with what I would suspect is plywood. Piece of junk IMO. Then I found a Squier Standard online for cheap and bought that for parts as well. I was shocked at the quality of it! It was made in Indonesia and the tremelo was a modern 2 post type - pretty decent. The paint on the body is metal flake gold, actually pretty nice finish. I should have no trouble selling it on eBay. The neck is even nicer than the Affinity and it's going on my swamp ash custom "Frankenguitar" body. Also, the pickups are Alnico-5. Not too bad. The Affinity ones seemed like toy pu's compared. The Standard came with a nice 2 ply pickguard as well. Overall, I would recommend the Squire Standard for anyone looking for a beginner guitar. (And I would not recommend the Affinity to anyone.) 12. Hey guys!, I have a Fender Squire Standard that I'm taking apart to use for parts. I notice they upgraded the tremelo to a 2- post design. When I unscrew the posts, how do I get the studs that the posts screw into out of the body? Thanks! Coolcat
  13. Yeah, I've palyed with Bigsbies. I love them. I also have a strat with a locking Floyd Rose. It definitely has more tremelo "range". But I love the feel and the retro look of the Bigsby. I guess it's all in the "eye of the beholder", eh? Anyone else out there a Bigsby fan? I'd love to hear some feedback about what bridges work best with them. Thanks for all the help! [G]
  14. Thanks! I actually have a strat that I traced. I wanted plans to know where the holes should be for routing and especially bridge placement. But for now I'm using that strat outline and customizing it from there. My big concern is the bridege. I'm buying a Bigsby B5 and have to figure out what type of bridge will work with that on a strat/jazzmaster type body and strat neck. [G]
  15. Hello guys! I'm using a strat neck and making a custom body. Keeping the strat three single coil set-up. What I want to do is put a Bisby B5 on it. I need a tune-o-matic type bridge, I'm assuming. I'm not sure how to go about figuring out all the measurements. When you say the "distance from the nut to the bridge" what "nut" are you talking about exactly? I'm still in the designing stages right now. Also, I would like to find a diagram of a body plan for a strat and a jazzmaster somewhere online. The CAD files on guitarbuild.com won't open on my macintosh. Anyone have these? Thanks for all your input!!! -George B.
  16. Hello out there in guitar building land! I'm about to embark on my first guitar and have absolutely no idea what I'm doing! but I'm a fast learner and a good listener! Here's my plan: I'm going to design a body based on a strat, but with slight mods - something that looks like a jazzmaster. I've purchased a stratguitar to use the neck and hardware and wiring. I'm not sure what the bst way to start the body. Should I find Strat plans and alter them? Is there a place to find them? Thanks for any tips and I'll be reading throughout this website to learn as much as i can. I look forward to hearing from you guys! -George
