  1. Jay - I couldn't tell if you were serious or not - please don't be offended by my emoticon. Just wondering what was up, that's all.

Is there a crack in the joint (in the upper middle) or is that just the way the wood is?

    B) Cool. I'm getting pretty good at misunderstanding people around here. :D

But yeah, I see that "crack" too. What is that?

  2. This thread is SO awesome.

    :D

Litch - what is that top wood you've got there? Maybe you mentioned it back on page 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 or ..., sorry if I missed it. Did you put something on it for the pic - it kinda looks wet or something?

BTW, still looking for that $50, this could take a while...

There's a problem with me saying that this thread is awesome? B) IMO, it's a nice thing to say.

    Jay.

  3. There are fretless guitars that work just fine. Dweezil Zappa uses one ona few songs on one of his albums. It sounds very interesting.

Also, I believe G&L Will do a fretless fingerboard on your custom guitar order.

Anyway, I'm not offering suggestions on how to do it, but I DO know that it CAN be done.

    Jay. :D

  4. CoolJay, that is some kickass contrast. Take a pic of that thing outside with some natural light.

BTW i think I have the exact same carpet.

    Thanks. B)

No problem. Next time I take it outside for sanding, I'll take some pics. This may be later tonight, because I think I'm finally going to drill neck-attachment holes.

That Carpet RULES! No matter how many times your cat throws up on it, it cleans up without leaving a trace. :D

    Jay.

  5. How long did you leave the paint stripper on the guitar before you scraped it off? I had really good results with leaving it on longer than the directions said....and I only had to use the stripper 2 times, but even after the first time, you could see the bare wood.

Maybe you sohuld leave it on there longer??? Or maybe you're right....maybe Ibanez uses an insane amount of clear on their guitars. Who knows. Either way....if you're getting the paint off, then you're doing it right. B):D

  6. lookin good! The very first upward curve on the top (neck side of the top tuners) looks a little uneven, though... is that just because of the light, is is the curve a little off?

    B)

What you're seeing (I think) is the pencil mark from when I drew it on. The final design is a little different than the pencil marks, and in that particular spot, I just left about 2mm of the wood on the outside of the line. I THINK that's what you're seeing. Thanks for pointing it out, because I'm gonna go rub my fingers on it about 400 times to make sure I got it straight. :D

HOWEVER, an error that I can point out is the tuner on the bottom-left. (High E). The distance betweein the first and second tuners is a little less than the distance between the others. :D

You can see BOTH of these issues clearly in this picture...

    Thanks again everybody.

Hi Boggs....I know you from the Carvin furom. :D

  7. Cool guitar man! :D I was thinking about getting a bloodwood neck from Warmoth and making the body, but since I have some birdseye maple neck blanks, I'll use one of them. Rockin guitar! B)

just a note about that.....My friend wanted a get a Bloodwood neck from Warmoth, but they told him that they couldn't do an angled hedadstock neck with bloodwood bnecause the bloodwood scarf joint won't hold the glue or something. They WILL make you a bloodwood non-angled headstock neck. And they will use it as a fingerboard on either one.

Anyway, just figured now was a good time to share this completely random bit of information. :D

Oh, and I'll be putting gold hardware on my guitar. I have gold EVERYTHING. I even have gold pickup hight adjustment screws. :D

    Thanks again everybody.

  8. :D:DB)

    WOW! Thanks everybody. !!! B)

Yes, it is designed after a Caparison. My Switzerland friend showed me that Caparison picture and suggested that we do our headstocks like that. I had never seen that headstock before, and I just fell in love with it. I believe it's called a "Devil's Tail" or something. Mine's not exactly the same shape, but it's close. I actually tried my best to mimic my guitar's lower horn so that it would look good together. When I hold the inside of the headstock against the outside of the bottom horn, the curve matches. :D and on the bottom of my headstock, I kinda indented a little to mimic the beginning of the "waist" :D So anyway, that's what was going on in my head. B)

Thanks for the comments everybody. I'm gonna be drilling the neck holes soon, so wish me luck! :D

Oh, and Litchfield.....That Green DC RULES!!!!!!!! B)B)

    Later,

    Jay.

  9. :D:D

Well, I just got done shaping, driing, and dry-installing my hardware on my neck. It's a Warmoth neck, but I got a paddle-headstock so I could shape it myself. I rough cut it with a jig-saw, and then finished up with 150 sandpaper wrapped around various objects (my finger, a Centrum can, an oatmeal can, and a piece of wood). I think it came out pretty good. Check it out...

    Anyway, here's the scoop...

The neck came from Warmoth. It's a flame maple neck with angled headstock (and scarf joint), with a scalloped bloodwood fingerboard with white side dots. The body (made by Chris Woods) is a a bloodwood core sandwiched between figured maple. Here's a pic of that.... (I've posted this picture before).

    Neck2.jpg

My friend in Switzerland is doing the exact same guitar. (Kind of). We both bought bodies at the same time from this guy, Chris. His has the Vai handle and a bevel cut into the top, and mine is just a regular RG shape with some routing around the edges. My friend's neck is Paduak with a dark fingerboard, but I forget which wood it is. We're calling this collaborative effort our "intercontinental Guitar Project." B)

I will be using Stewmac's aeresol laquer on this thing. I have all the laquer and stuff, and I hope to spray the first coats this weekend. I HOPE to. B) I even have the stewmac finishing video, and I've watched it a few times. I think I'm ready. :D My friend used tung oil because stewmac won't ship aeresol cans to switzerland. B)

Anyway, I'm just a little excited because I finished shaping the headstock tonight. Just thought I'd post it here and see if anyone cares. B)

    Later,

    Jay. :D

  10. What's up.

I'm new too, but I can help a little....

First, without a trem, you DO drill through the guitar and ground to the bridge. It's not as bad as it sounds though....you just have a small hole running from the cavity to the bridge, and run a wire through it. Place the bridge on top of the wire (no solder required), and thaere you go. :D

Abuot the no ferrules on top....I wouldn't do that. After a qhile, I can picture the strings rubbing the finish off the top of each hole, and to me, this is just asking for trouble....especially when ferrules are so easy to get and use.

Now about the TOM bridge....instead of doing all that crazy stuff about lining everything up, you can simply recess the TOM bridge, and then you won't need a neck angle. Check out Carvin's new M bridge....it's exactly what you're describing...recessed TOM bridge with the strings going through the body using ferrules.

    Anyway ,hope this helps. B)

    Jay.

  11. (But then, WHY would you have a 12-string with ONLY a bridge pickup?)

It's hard to tell from that slightly unfocused picture but isn't that a single-coil pickup near the neck?

I was thinking that too, but I also think it could be just another reflection. Who knows. B) I mean, if THAT's a pickup, then there are pickups all over the guitar... :D

Whatever....It's not like I'm gonna buy it. :D
