Hello guys. I recently bought a guitar off of a friend of a friend. Its a Fernandez strat style that has been poorly maintained. It was 50 bucks and came with some interesting yet poorly installed upgrades. Let me explain it. First it was probably a 150 dollar guitar. The person recieved it as a gift and tried "upgrading" it. It was originally a cream white, like hendrix's guitar. They put Sperzel locking tuners, seymore duncan active pickups and possibly a dimarzio tremolo (not sure if it came stock or not). They did a poor wiring job on the pickups, seemed to get a new pickguard too. They lost 3 of the back covers for the Sperzel locking tuners and strung the guitar backwards (tuning up would tune it down, ***?). Oh yeah did i also mention they spray painted it BLACK and did a horrible job, and not to mention the random dents, gashes, nicks and runs. It needed help, so thats what I'm here for. I plan to strip it down, fill the nicks and bruises with resin and paint it electric yellow with a nice clear glossy finish. I am going to build a guitar later on and I thought this would be a good starter. I may need some help on the way and thats why I'm posting this. It seemed to be very badly stored and maintained, with rusted screws and the such. I want to replace the pickguard also, and get these pickups working. I think the batteries are dead.

Now heres the questions:

Is stripping the guitar with chemicals a good approach to this? They just went over the original finish with spray paint.

Is resin the right filler to use to fill in the gashes?

What things do i need to paint this? Sanding sealer? Primer?

Can i use a can of spray paint?

Is laquer a good finish?

yeah i had the same problem. i didnt get those responses though. anyways, i have a squier, which is the same shape as a strat, just not as thick, so i took a pencil and filed it in half and traced my squier onto 4 taped-together 8x11 pieces of paper, it came out pretty good. im just not sure about my neck pocket and i have to find the center line.

How bout you go to a local guitar store and ask if you could copy one of their guitars?

if so, which should i get, or should i get them all?

I was looking around lmi for some inexpensive finishes and saw alot of different types. I was wondering whats the best for the buck (im going to be dying beforehand). Also, do i need a sealer for the wood, and do i put it on before or after the dying process?

i went ahead and got a red, light blue, and silver. dirt cheap too

the guy buys them factory direct and sells them for under $50.

it's going to have red lace sensor, power sensor and light blue lace sensor, a white pickguard and silver hardware

i guess ill go for the mimf plans which is pretty much 15 dollars for a photocopied piece of paper! sound like a good deal to me!

how bout you buy a led and hook a resistor up to it, then power it using a cr2032.

I am building a guitar and would like to know if this is a good combination.

lace sensor red - bridge

lace power sensor - mid

lace sensor light blue - neck

will there be any conflicts with the pickups, and what do you think about this combo? any other ideas for alternate pickups and such?

I just recieved my 3piece alder from LMI, it sure is sweet, and cheap. I requested them to find me a good one with matching colors and good grain, and they got it. as for my neck, i bought one off of ebay for about 90 bucks with fender tuners, its a mighty mite. really nice too. im building a guitar as well, as you can tell. i wish you luck

I've seen templates on the internet for 40 dollars or more, and since I plan on making only one guitar, i was wondering if anyone could make me a copy of their templates. Ill pay them $$. Post a reply or PM me if you can, i would be greatly appreciated

i think its too light colored, but in the third picture on the top half (i guess low light) its kinda dark. i like that

so i should test it on a scrap first? if i add more powder or whatever will it make it darker?

or do i have to put more coats on?

i noticed on stewmac that guitar stains are like 14 bucks. I would like to get a nice blue color, not too dark not too light. I have a site that sells stains and was wondering if any of these are good and if they can be used on a guitar. please help

I want to try practicing cutting a neck out of plywood, what tools do i need. I know i need a planer and some sort of saw, what else?

ok ok, bad idea i guess. Now about basswood, is there any way to make it harder. I might end up buying some because its cheaper, but people have said it is too soft
