Never worked with spalt before so tips would be good..If i'm going to use a splat top and do some carving do I do any stabilizing before, or wait till its shaped and getting near finish sanding? ie if I stabilize with the CA or epoxy does it only sink in a bit, so as soon as you remove some wood it back to being fresh?

Had a Ibanez ZR 7 string trem sitting around waiting to be used, the routes are completely different from the normal so made a rough test piece

Time to try building a neckthru this week.

Had an ash RG blank sitting around so chopped the middle out.

Gave the bandsaw a tune up the other day, new blade & replaced the bearings & blimey it cut straighish on some resawing

Did you use the standard 1.5tbs of borax per gallon principle and temp as well are go by something else?

I used about a packet of borax which was 400g in a 50lt dustbin, then scaled it up for the big tank

Got them cleared, so built a couple up with the 7 string parts I had to test

cheers for the advice guys, appreciate it, makes sense - grinding/ buffing machine running too fast.

Did some some googling & Stewmacs expensive one was running at at 800ish rpm with big mops, other guys running slack drive belts to, so it would slow to a stop at pressure, like in tight horn to neck interface - made sense.

Got some Menzerna pads off ebay, - just stick them on the DA & you only have to worry about holding the guitar down somehow, thanks.

Well had some good practice spraying and polishing recently

What did I learn? Make sure to clean your guns! Ruined my first 2 thinking I had cleaned them properly & left them filled with some thinner, thankfully they were very cheap £30 for the pair.

After sanding from 1000 to 2000 I tried using a grinding machine with soft buffing mops running at 3000 (I think)rpm, didn't use the compounds that came with the kit as they seemed far too corse. Couldn't get any good results, unless it was really light pressure that was too difficult to control it burned through on some test pieces. Looked at some youtube vids & the seemed to be using far more pressure than I was. Ended up using foam pads in the pillar drill running at max speed 2000ish rpm with 3m perfect then finesse, not done any swirl removal yet. Any idea what went wrong using the buffing machine?

Hot stuff Paulie, good to see this one finished. That finish is inspiring me to get on sanding all my swirl bodies. It is purple though isn't it?

Ah just back from holiday & I missed these Wez. Indeed piss poor, but then they look exactly like my first swirl.

The thing I like about swirls is they are so random, some like, some I hate. I remember when they first came out & the only ones I had ever seen were Vai's main guitars that he got photographed with in the guitar mags back in late 80 early 90's. No internet back then & no way to see the hundreds of others Ibanez produced.

Fast forward 15 years & the internet is up and running & I discover Jemsite & find all these amazing swirl guitars. Most of the aftermarket ones at that time were done by Herc Fede who had really perfected the clean style & without realising I saw pics of the original ATD ones & thought a lot of them were horrible messy things, not to mention the Jap MKR Universes that had better swirl patterns (to me) but nasty non neon colours. Whats all this rambling about, don't know really but probably the best advice swirling is - do you like the look of it before you dip your guitar into it, pattern, colour, paint thickness etc

Keep at it, its great fun & incredibly messy, I remember trying to swirl a bike helmet - it looked like crap, but the swirling on the whole of my hand was amazing.

found the pics of an old Herc Fede complete swirl, he must have had a deep swirl tank & a good way to push the whole guitar into the water

Do it, do it. Been meaning to do another, had a bunch of leaf sitting around for ages. Are you going to do colour and clear paint or just the colour & try and get some good gaps?

Have you tried Humbrol paints?

Is there a particular reason why one shot is better than other paints?

I have been trying to get the technique down with Humbrol paints and cant quite get it (I could always send it to you to do )

Neil did one with Humbrol & couldn't believe how easy it was, every colour worked straight from the tin.

The only reason I use Oneshot is they were the only enamels I found that were available in neon colours.

Wez, all white basecoats, makes the neons pop a bit more. I finally got a compressor and some guns so going to be practising my clear coats on these.

I went a bit swirl crazy this week and remembered to do a 'How to' for the video area, cheers

I ruined the original board when trying to oil finish it as black gunk game out from under the frets & stained the sapwood padauk, so had to rip it off & replace

Finially got round to finishing this up.

Stuck a Sustainer in there for a laugh. Wasn't sure what to do on the headstock as the flame maple looked a bit out of place, so did some creative dyeing to try & match the board.

Was going to make plastic covers but had some limba from a uke kit, so tried to make it match up a bit. The trem cover was as wide as the piece was hence the gap. Also made a little sight glass for the Sustainer LED from a toy watch.

The body blank was slightly thinner than standard and right on the limit for a trem, but is very resonant

this has been sitting around doing not a lot. Redid the fretboard as the first finishing attempt using oil left massive black dirty marks under the frets, tried sanding the board down but got too thin so replaced it. Coated it in CA this time, tru oil on the rest of the neck & body, still got a few coats to go but strung it up the other day.

first ever attempt at binding, found a router bit & took a couple a bearings of roundover bits that matched the plastic. Glued in the neck
