made some shavings & fretted

Cheers for the advice on the Paduk, got plenty to test with.
Had the angle grinder out this morning for some shaping. Then stopped for lunch and a jam

Nice piece of black limba off Simo - cheers
Body was just about big enough for a JS, only about 5mm too small for the waist. Routed & a quick round over front and back all the radius carving to do.
flame maple scarfed neck
paduk board

Love it - rustastic, think I'm going to dig out my gold leaf
-
Didn't know about the black sandback thing when I did these -
Both tops from the same bit of wood, dark brown sandback then colour, black sandback then colour
-
J, got my guitarist sub yesterday - good stuff, pages of reviews & even sound clips on the CD - should be out in a few days

Sheena
Basswood body
Maple neck with flame board 25.5"
Chrome hardware
Axerus Lipstick humbucker
Humbrol Enamel swirl & 2K clear
1st guitar I've ever made for someone else - a present for my sisters birthday, so simple and cheap, the only request her fav colour. She been playing longer that me, but only ever strummed chords on a classical, never played an electric.

nearly done, just need to glue the nut & wire

cheers gents, I think I like this one better also..
The clear you bought in a can. Didn't it have hardner in it that you just push the button on the can and that mixes the hardener in? I thought I saw something like that. I forget the name of it.normally the 2k I buy, has the button on the bottom of the can to mix the parts but this one didn't. (didn't know until it arrived) I asked the seller who said it mixes inside the can, ok whatever, fell for it despite loads of sellers offering the same thing on ebay. Anyway, recoated yesterday with the proper stuff so no worries

I like it a lot, really fun
-
Bought a different brand of 2k clear in a can off ebay as I couldn't find my usual, 2 weeks later it still soft - it was like 2k without the hardner, so stripped it all off & just reswirled
& back to the usual 2k

seriously cool stuff. looks better than your ibanez !!.
Iv been meaning to do one of these, but in titanium white, antique ivory & silver or chrome. Cant find a good silver anywhere always crappy lookin kinda grey. Have a nice Korina body all ready to go almost a year now, buggin the crap outa me.
You goin with green pups on this ? like the original below it ?
thanks, I made that one from scratch. I know logos are a contentious issue, but the logo & ibanez tick are so much part of the look along with the grip & claw, that the headstock shape just doesn't look right to me without one. If I had some sort of thermal printer/cutter it might be different though.

I love it great job, must have been tricky on all those contours
you know what would look hot...some lipstick humbuckers
no idea what they sound like though

Nice work Andy.
I seem to recall you posted pics of the swirl process, dustbins and all ... or did I dream that?
I've just been back through your posts and I can't find it?
cheers, you must have dreamt it, but I keep meaning to do a vid
knocked the frets in & did some sanding

my second scarf
Nice flame board from Jaden

How big is the can you are using?
500ml which google says is 0.9 of a pint- don't know if you Aussies are imperial or metric
The only good spare pickup I had lying around was a 20yr old faded pink paf pro & even I though it didn't look right. So with some inspiration from Bare Knuckle did some modding of a chrome cover
-
thats a good looking clear and dye job, how many coats lacquer did you throw on if you don't mind me asking. Also i got that same tremolo and love how it feels like a fixed bridge. good jorb
cheers, about 3/4 of a spray can, that was about 6-7 coats.
-
Made the neck- flame maple blank & board, but forgot to take any pics. Fretboard from Jaden on here, cheers & I'll get round to buying a fretsaw sometime. Strung it up to check alignment.

Many thanks for that Andy, how are you finding the 2k clear in a can for build up ? ie how many coats are you averaging per guitar to get a good flat glossy finish. I found that I'm using about 6-8 coats leaving it a good week and then flatting off and I'm getting good results, then again I'm using a spray gun compressor set up. Just curious as to spray can versus spray gun method
I'm loving the 2k in a can the last 2 swirls finishes were just one can each, & this top was 3/4 of a can, same as you - about 6-8 coats, 5 mins between coats to flash off + being only the top, could lay it down & get some wet coats on without have to worry that it was hung up. Dry in an hour or so, cured in 24hr & ready to polish tomorrow, but might just watch the GP instead

Well,
I bought a bag right after i asked you about this... It diddnt work. I used a shop vac to draw the air out, but it still diddnt compress nearly as tight as I needed it to. There were lumps and unglued spots everywhere. I dont know how you did it, but Kudos for getting it done with that.
sorry to hear that, how thick was the veneer & was it going on a flat top? I was quite surprised when it worked being a 1st attempt. I tested the body in the bag, sucked the air out, left it a day & you couldn't pull the bag off the body, so figured it was good to try.
Hey Andy that is a nice piece of quilt veneer been looking for some myself, whereabouts in the UK did you get that from ?? great build bro and love the colour as well, I tend to use Axminster myself quite a bit and their service is fantastic look forward to seeing that guitar in all its gloryI just had to look at paypal because I forgot to save a bookmark - it was from http://www.originalmarquetry.co.uk
Axminster - first time I ever used them was the start of this build, couldn't believe what great service - ordered some sanding drums, router bits & the dye. Everything turned up the next day, apart from the dye & I'd forgotten where I ordered it from anyway get a call from them next day saying had I received it yet, as ups had tried to deliver & left a card (card tucked in with the rest of the junk mail, so missed it) stuff delivered next day. They included a catalogue which made me drool at all the shop tools...I would like a band saw, drill press, jointer, spindle sander, belt sander, router table...oh well back to the hand tools
-
Wow that looks awesome! Congrats.. So sanding back also works with veneer?
yep, seemed to, veneer is less than a mm thick so dont sand too hard.
Just sprayed the top with 2k rattle can
-
WOW that top looks GREAT! i love it! what options did you use? black stain sandback and used like an amber yellow? or what? cause i want to make a guitar with that color one day
great work!
thanks, I got this sample pack of coloured stains from axeminster in the uk only 10 quid or so, did a little rainbow test piece of all the colours lined up & blending into eachother. It was like oh thats nice & I like that, but decided I wanted something different than the usual. Then it was just trying to follow whatever I stain tutorials I'd read, so black then sand back, then covered the whole thing with the bright yellow, then something called jacobean oak applied neat around the edges then blended in with a cloth inwards almost tried to rub it in following with the quilt pattern.
its got a light clear coat to protect it when I start on the back
-
doh watch the finger
-
looks good - what colour swirl is it getting
ha, thanks wez - it's tempting, but I've got another finished jem body waiting for that. I'm favouring a bengal, but you never know, when I play around with the dyes, it might end up pink.
