  1. So the neck rod might be a good idea? I know that it can at least be used for a guitar neck; the EBMM Petrucci Signature has birdseye maple for the neck.
  2. http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Truss_rods/Car...rbon_Fiber.html I bought a nice piece of birdseye maple today, to be used in a neck-through guitar. The piece warped slightly, and I had it planed to fix this a bit. How effective are these rods, what are the downsides, if any, how much heavier will they make the neck, and do I have any need for them? Thanks.
  3. I've got a question for the guitar I'm building. I'm using a Wilkinson tremolo. Should I cut the neck pocket 5/8 in deep? Also, should I just imitate the shape of the neck pocket on my other guitars, that is, is it okay as long as the neck fits snugly? How thick should the fingerboard be, if it is to lay flush with the body? What I'm really saying, is that I've never seen a good explaination of the issue of the neck pocket. Anybody have some good insight?
  4. Okay, I'll go with that; it seems simple enough to wrap my brain around. Thanks a lot for your advice!
  5. So basically freehand the line, then sand it down using a straight sanding block? Okay. Also, you mentioned a miter. I have a miter box as well, would this help?
  6. I'm going to be bandsawing the neck of my guitar tomorrow. How will I cut on a straight line? I've considered using a metal straightedge as a guide, but was wondering if there's a better way which I haven't thought of. Thanks!
  7. Yeah, but that costs money Are there any available online for free, or anybody who has a scanner who wants to scan their template? Also, I need a bit of advice on using a router. Are there any tutorials on using it to cut pickup/bridge cavities? I've read the instructions on Stew Mac for using their template for the Wilkinson, but what I'm having trouble with is the actual use of the router.
  8. I'm going to be using DiMarzio pickups and a Wilkinson (non-gotoh) on my guitar. Are there are to-scale templates available online? Thanks,
  9. I did that all with the bandsaw; I had some trouble with the horns but I'm just sanding that out. The sanding's looking good, I'll have some pictures soon. How much do those cylindrical or belt sanders run? I might get one if they're not too expensive. I'm going to use a non-Gotoh Wilkinson bridge. For all the routing, I'll be, uh, using a router, I was lent one of those that can do both plunge routing and the other kind. As you can see, I'm an expert on the use of a router. I need a bit of help with the pickups and bridge. Any tips?
  10. I finally have all the wood I need save for the fingerboard and a possible veneer for the body (still considering my finish options). The neck will be maple, the body consists of two pieces of basswood which I glued before taking any pictures (the seam is perfect) and the fingerboard will be rosewood. I based the body's design off the JEM777, because I'm going for an RG/JPM/JEM sort of body shape. 25.5" scale length, 24 frets, and I'll have two humbuckers rather than one. Also, I won't be using a Floyd; I'm going to use a Wilkinson with Sperzel locking tuners and a graphite nut. Sixteen inch radius on the fretboard, jumbo fretwire. Here are some pictures of what I've done so far. You might find more here. Tracing out the body: Bandsawing: At the moment I have some sanding work to do on the body, then I'll be routing the pickups and perhaps bridge. Does anybody have a routing template for a non-gotoh Wilkinson? Does anybody know why, on the JEM template, the pickup routing templates have different widths on each side for the screw holes? Thanks!
  11. Hmm, maybe I'll go with a double expanding truss rod. I probably should have done a bit of reading up before ordering my truss rod. Those are the flat-bottomed channels, right? Either way, how do I anchor the nut end? Edit: Actually, if there's no downside to using this single-action truss rod, I'll probably use it. Anyway, my question still stands, how do I anchor it?
  12. http://www.warmoth.com/common/supplies/trussrods.htm I bought the GTR3 and TRN1. I'm having some trouble wrapping my mind around its installation. Yes, I know where it goes, but do both ends need to be anchored? If the nut end isn't held still, turning the nut won't alter the length of the rod whatsoever, it will just cause the nut to move up and down.
  13. If I want to build a neck according to certain measurements (i.e. width/thickness at nut and heel, etc), how do I shape it? I could build a template for the neck, but its width and thickness are not constant. So, what does everybody do to shape a neck properly?
  14. Thanks. One more thing. How do I know where to place the bridge on the body? Do I just measure how far from the nut it is in another guitar, then try to replicate that?
  15. Okay, today I bought a piece of Maple and ordered some fretwire, a nut blank, a truss rod, both side and fretboard inlays, and Make Your Own Electric Guitar by Melvin *snicker* Hiscock. Tomorrow I'm going to get some rosewood and basswood. I'll keep you all posted. Right now my question is how to go about making slots in the nut. Hopefully all my questions are answered by the book. Oh yeah, I'd sorta like to do binding. What sort of material would I use for that, and are there any good texts?
  16. My other question is about cutting the contours (I don't mean the shape of the body, I mean the place for your arm to go and so on). How is it done?
  17. Hey. I'm a beginner looking to build his own guitar. On Tuesday I'm picking up some cheap wood to practice with, so that I don't screw up a nice piece of wood. Ultimately my goal is to build a clone of the Ibanez JPM P1. Is it worth it to shell out $44 for a template or could I rely upon measurements alone? My main concern at the moment is the building of the neck, and fretting it. Does anybody have any tips, clarifications, or sage advice that are the sort of thing beginners should know and don't? I've already read over basically every tutorial available here. Thanks!
  18. This isn't completely guitar-related, but it is electronics related. How would I go about building a midi floorboard, as far as electronics is concerned. Are there chips available to handle the midi?
  19. I'm curious if it's possible to build a piezo pickup along the lines of the L.R. Baggs X-Bridge. If so, how cost effective is it? I already have my own bridge to start with.
