  1. Hi, In Martin Koch's book Building Electric Guitars he suggests (in setting out frets) that if a fret position is more than 1/64" or 0.3m/m out from the calculated position it should be remarked. Questions: 1) I'm assuming this means +/- 1/64"? 2) What, in people's opinion, is the maximum tolerance allowable? My 24" rule has 1/100ths but only at inch 4 which makes it prone to error when trying to align something like 8.231 inches. Any help/advice would be appreciated. Dave
  2. Thanks for the advice, I'll check out the local auto paint factors as you suggest.
  3. Hi, I'm gathering as much information as I can before starting my first guitar project. I'm UK based so if there's anyone out there who knows where to buy good quality finishes (in cans) for guitars in the UK (especially on the high street/retail park), please let me know. Some questions: 1) Can I use an acrylic paint/lacquer such as Plasti-Kote? 2) Are all car spray paints usable? 3) In the forum's experience have any brands (in cans) proved better than others? 4) Any other thoughts ideas that might help a novice builder with finishing? Hope there are some experts out there! Thanks Dave
  4. If you get a chance please let me know how you get on, I'm some weeks (if not months) behind you. All tips and tricks will be gratefully received!
  5. Many thanks for the advice I'll check the forum strings as you suggest.
  6. Hi, I'm a first time guitar builder (but capable woodworker and 30 year guitar player) about to start a solid body guitar project. I've bought a couple of books to help me, Melvyn Hiscock's "Make your own electric guitar" and Martin Koch's "Building electric guitars". Both of which talk about radiusing the guitar neck but don't really explain in any detail how to produce a compound radius neck or even if it's worth the effort (in many other ways I find both books excellent!) Three questions: 1) Should I bother trying to learn how to do it? 2) Where might I find information to help the amateur builder? 3) What are the benefits versus a standard radius neck? Thanks.
