  1. after a while youre gonna get tired of having to deal with an entire body sticking up while youre trying to do stuff like cut a neck angle, headstock angle, pretty much anything having to do with the neck. also imagine how much of an inconvenience it is gonna be when you are trying to do little things like drill the tuner holes and you have to somehow balance an entire guitar in mid air while holding it perfectly in the pillar drill.

  2. i would just settle for going hsh and tapping coils and using a five way and some mini switches to get inbetween sounds. thats just what i would do though. there are many options though as pointed out. i think the best route would be to make it so that you can go from sounding like an lp to a strat by the flip of a few switches. there are just certain things you need the two different sounds for.

  3. try making a grid around the design and drawing out a larger grid on some cardstock and just copy each individual square.

    also i agree with wes, a mockingbird looks best and sounds best neckthru. it looks good, it has great sustaining power, its very sturdy if you get your joints strong, and neckthru gives it that authentic bc rich-ness(for lack of a real word to describe it)

  4. ive built three guitars, and ive set up a danelectro to play slide. i am pretty weirded out by the fact that you automatically assume i have no experience whatsoever, though. i dont see how its that hard. there isnt that much wood shaping involved. im basically going to build a thinline box. its going to have a nut extension to give extendedly high action. im probably going to just use a hardtail bridge.

  5. its a thread that the mods thought was pretty important so it appears at the top of the list so people dont stupidly ask the same question over and over again, or so that we have it as a reference for future usage. tutorials and stuff get pinned because they provide a lot of info to everyone. thats what i always think about when i see them pinned.

  6. i really think you guys should outline this in a tut. or at least have this thread pinned. javacody is most definitly right that this comes up a lot in some form or another. all those times guys ask for cads(im guilty of that), if they had access to this info it would really help them a lot and maybe even solve some of the clutter on the board.

  7. well looking at all my future plans, i noiticed something. all my guitars i want to build are pretty much the same. after high school i want to go to roberto-venn and do a lot more than just guitars. i love old folk instruments, and i can play them too, so why not get some practice?

    so i think im gonna put the seven string warlock and the ml on hold for a while and kill two birds with one stone. i love playing the tenor banjo and guitar and i also have recently fell in love with slide guitar. so why not build myself a tenor and a lap steel? i mean they are both really easy projects and good practice. although my name on the forum would suggest that i openly condone devil worship and full on balls to the wall black metal rocking out, i also really love to play southern folk music and turn of the century type stuff. also you have no clue how much fun it is to be playing a tenor and just start shredding.

    so here it is mapped out:

    1. tenor guitar

    *either tele or sg style.

    *use standard bridge without the outer saddles(ala old gibson tenors)

    *use real pickups but cut my own covers only exposing the middle four polepieces, or on tele just use a standard tele setup with a rail pickup in the bridge

    *tenor scale length(yeah no duh i guess)

    *use a bigsby clone for the wigglestick if its an sg

    *either modeled after the tony iommi sg or the 52 tele butterscotch blonde

    2. lap steel

    *setup to look like an art-deco gretsch electromatic from the 40s.

    *silver finish with metalflake in it.

    *paint the fretboard white with art-deco squares and rectangles for an added look.

    *old style klusons

    *a bridge and peghead cover made out of aluminum

    *made from mahogany with a maple cap on top.

    *use a steel as a bridge angled like a tom for intonation purposes.

    *use black plastic in the fret slots.

    *use a tv'tron bridge p-up

    id really like some feedback. these are going to be miniprojects for me for the most part. im probably buying the wood off my friend shortly.

  8. the glue underneath a veneer is absolutely the biggest tone killer ever,ha?! What about the glue holding the two piece bodies together, and the dye in the wood, and the finish on the wood, and the dyes in the finish, and the subatomic particles left on top of the finish by the polishing compounds. If you want to hear the opposite end of things, then check out www.ctbasses.com  .... carl himself  ridicules the many myths of guitar building in a very odd way,just check out the interview. I am glad I ran across his interview, because that is the way that O often feel about everyones unfounded claims about tone, and what really matters in affecting it. Oh yeah blue tinted instruments sound better than red ones because of the differentiating manner in which they reflect/absorb light waves- thus matter and energy. Not to bash anyone but there are just way to many unscientific, hairsplitting views on topics of tone. Build it tight and good with decent wood, and good pickups, the rest is just icing on the cake.

    i think i missed something. no one gave any of the stupid falsified opinions that ive seen on here, especially about glue and finishes. i think where it was going was that he needed to get good wood and good pickups. im hoping that was mostly sarcasm.

  9. that is one sweet guitar.

    i think ash makes for great strat bodies, its nice and twangy with some bite. but the pickups are where you need to be putting the attention to shape the sound after you get the solidity of the basis that the wood provides. it is possible to get a strat to sound mellow with the right pickups. crafty had a good idea with the alnico II pro's. those are gonna give you a nice warm, mellowed down sound for a strat style setup and an ash body. but do as much research as you can before making any big decisions.

  10. if you have no neck angle then the bridge wont have an angle, it can stand straight up off the body at 90 degrees. it WILL, however, need an angle to intonate correctly, but this is only a placement angle, a different angle then i referred to in the first sentence. look at some tune o matic equipped guitars and you will see the angle that you need. the tailpiece and the tune o matic wont be parallel. please somebody back me up with a better explaination, as i am bad at explaining things.

    and also if you have no neck angle you have to either raise the neck or recess the bridge to compensate for the extremely high action that you would have using a tom on a fender type guitar setup.

  11. first of all, i dont think you need a perpendicular bridge angle if youre not having a neck angle, if thats what you mean by bridge angle. if you have a neck angle then the bridge angle should be perpendicular, or 90 degrees, to the flat plane of youre neck angle. i dont know if it matters though since you have a flattopped body, but im in no way an expert.

    second of all, you will need to angle your bridge as it sits on top of the plane of the body top. i cant think of the angle off the top of my head, but the bass side of the bridge will appear to have a longer scale length than the treble side, but in reality it will intonate properly because the saddles and heights will lock into the scale length. im gonna leave that open to whoever the next pro is who reads this, so daveq i hope you read this.

    third of all, locking nuts are to lock in the tuning on knife edge tremelos so nosedive after nosedive you dont have to worry about the tuning slipping in between the resetting of the knife edges and the tuners and the binding at the nut. i have no idea what youre trying to accomplish by putting it on a tom equipped guitar, nor do i know what pros or cons come with that, so go for it if you want one.

    fourth of all, beautiful work so far, keep the pics coming. especially if you do infact do a swirl.
