I have a question: these "wings" are glued, nailed, or they are set-on? you can remove them?

I was thinking in a travel guitar, similar to that silent acoustic guitars, with wings like yours, to make the guitar more compact.

I can post some photos of the build in progress if anyone wants them.

well, I was a little bury, and I passed some weeks without checking this forum...

and now the little baby is born!

we always became a kid when we have a new toy!

The last three days I was sewing the bottom, the sides and the top.

What a difficult task ! The layers to sew were too thick (vinyl leather + push + push + vinyl leather) and were impossible to use a domestic sewing machine !

I was talking with a shoe repairer and he told me talk the only solution was : sew manually using double polyamide linen, a thick needle and tweezers...

Well I tried this way and I have to say that is very difficult and slow, more than I thought.

The result is very ugly as you can see in the pics, but he told me that in this way the joint will be very strong and then I can cover the horrible sewing with a plastic ribbon.

well, it's really interesting... what you call "very ugly" i would have called "my best"...

but usind a ribbon is interesting, it's what's they call "finishing". you cover the ugly parts, and prtoect them, 'cause it's a sensible part.

it works like a pickguard, who protects the wiring of a guitar, and allows fixing the pickups more precisely.

man, it's incredible how the colors of the wood changes with the finish...

it's always an unexpected reaction (for us, not for the professionals...)

it became very dark, but it still beautyful!

and the case is very nice too.

Well, I built a tele in the last year. I'm not a luthier, it was my first try.

Cedro Rosa is called Spanish cedar in english, in spanish is just Cedro, it's science name is Cedrella Odorata, it's a tree of the same family of mahogany, as you already know it looks very similar to mahogany but smells wonderful

not only the smell, but the taste... it's so peculiar, when you're sanding it. you breathe the powder, and feel a taste in the tongue.

the cespanish cedar was really rose (like its name in portuguese, cedro rosa) before the finishing, but after it became really caramel. I didn't expected, but i leked it anyway!

I prefer screws for metal and not for wood because my Gibson S1 uses them and think that are more reliable, specially for an unexperienced guy like me. And choose allen ones because they are very easy to obtain near my home and looks good too.

About the finish you are right, I prefer to see the wood.

Don´t worry about your english or spanish. My english is near to poor and my portuguese don´t exist !

I saw you used that metal pieces to screw the neck (I don't know the name, here in brasil we call "bucha"). it's very goos, when you're making the guitar you have to set the neck many times to check millions of things, and put it off all the time (mainly if you are unexperienced).

I was afraid of overscrewing (this word exists?) my tele neck. i was advised to use one of these pieces, if there was any problem... but there was no problem =]

have you decided the finishing you'll make?

I didn't understand, it's out of the axis because you did it alittle wrong, or the wood has curved after you did it?

if it's the second option, i reccomend you to do another one, with a dryer wood.

if it's the first option, maybe you can use this neck.

well, there's an importante thing to think about: you think you can make another one, better? and all the other parts? it's your fistr try, or have you done another ones?

in my opinion it's not so bad. but I'm not so experienced, I'm only starting in the guitarbuilding...

well, I did a 1 piece neck, but not of maple, it's in pau-marfin, that it's a bit similar. with a skunk stripe of ipe.

It was my first project, so don't take it so seriously, but i believe it can be useful to you.

that in portuguese we call "braço" (arm) inspite neck.

I think in the martin koch's book "building electric guitars" there was something about this kind of neck, I'm not sure.

OK, here's another- I always think of a one piece neck as being the fender style neck with no seperate fingerboard, and a skunk stripe in the trussrod route. So I guess there is no one definition for "one piece neck"

well, I always though like this too...

"I though one piece" was neck and scale toghether... but we may be wrong, I don't know

I only built one guitar, but like you, I started from the very beginning, knowing nothing.

you said you didn't find that book they recommended you. I'll recommend another: "building electric guitars", by martin koch. I saw it on sale at amazon a few months ago.

I used mainly this one, and I think it's great. he's a german, but the book is in english.

the author has a website, www.buildyourguitar.com, with some articles. it's very interesting.

I recommend you to take a look in all building process you found (an there are many in this site). You'll see that there are many ways of doing the same thing, it'll help you taking decisions.

it's very that you have the basic tools and people to help. in my case, I "borrowed" an wood workshop, and I had a great help from the woodworkers.

well, some tips for you:

- try to choose an easy project. an existing guitar, but without complications. do not make curved top, binding, inlays... (i made a telecaster because it's one of the easiest guitars, and 'cause i love it).

- if you're going to make a new project, make it based on an existing project.

- tune-o-matic bridges are easier to get wrong... mainly, fender gears are more flexible, they are designded to have more setup range, you don't need to be so precise.

- make an bolt-on neck (screwed-on? i don't know the name), not the glued neck...

weel, it's my tips for you... possibly someone can give you differente ones, you do what you think it's better

Pau Marfim is the common name, it is also known as that in the states. Although I have personally never come across it. I believe Cedro Rosa is Cedrela fissilis. There may be more than one wood known as Cedro Rosa though.

ok the hyper-sonic is done! finally! here are some pics. it sounds great, but needs a little more tweaking on the frets. There are a couple that need a little more levelling. but I am really happy with how it all came out for my very first scratch build.
