  1. Well, the definition of a "business website" is unclear and this rule is NOT noted in the sign up section, as far as I can see. I was specifically refering to the sticky post located at the top of this forum titled, "Your Profile and Signature" Seeing as how my website, and Megadeth's, are more informative than sales oriented, I am adding my links to my signature again. If anyone has a problem with this, and would like to have me self-censored again, please let me know and I will gladly remove direct links. Of course, if you want to attack me, instead of focusing on the rules, I'll tear off the door to get out, while freeing the captives here, instead of letting it smack my booty.
  2. No way. Basswood is EXTREMELY soft. I read that, "There's a good chance a Floyd Rose Tremolo would eventually pull out of a Basswood body." That's the type of wood I learned to carve on in high school. I know for a fact that's a softwood and it is not suitable for my project. Here's a little on that topic from the magazine I'm using as a reference for most of my design. (Guitar Player, February 1991) "...a lot of players -- especially metallists -- have gone in the opposite direction. Ultra light woods such as Swamp Ash and Basswood are happening in a big way. One theory in support of this holds that, instead of maximizing string vibration, an electric body should dampen it, so that the pickups have minimal interaction with the body and can pick up pure string tone." I did not find much information on Cedar, except what I wrote earlier, but if these other Ultra Light woods are used, I think Cedar is an improvement over them. I've been looking into this wood possibility for a while and can't find any information to come right out and say not to use it. I'd like to know if anyone has any solid argument against it. As I said, I could not find much information on Cedar as a body choice. I would still welcome any negative or positive comments about the choice.
  3. I do appretiate the prompt feedback. Thanks. Now, I know Cedar is used more in Acoustics. However, Alder is more dense than Swamp Ash and Basswood, in that order, right? Does Cedar fall inbetween Alder and Swamp Ash, or not? What is it's relation to other wood? Nobody has a problem with Walnut for the neck? If people know good places to purchase wood, I'm looking. ; )
  4. I read that Cedar is very light weight but has a very rigid cell structure and my guitar instructor's advise was to make it as light as possible... if Basswood and Swamp Ash can be used, wouldn't Cedar be an improvement?

  6. I would have started with a neck. Not sure why you were waiting on that. Do you have a routed body? Everyone needs to know Scale Length before making a guitar, or assembling one. The neck you're looking at is for a left-handed guitar player. Is that what you need? If you remove the shark fin inlays you're going to have a lot of space to fill. Bolt-on necks are interchangeable in that that is the whole point of having a bolt-on neck. It's adjustable but it's not really a matter of preference. All 22 fret necks and all 24 fret necks do not have the same scale, unless you are sticking to a specific brand and model mass produced. If you want to know if you can use that neck, I would be asking the seller what the distance is from the nut to the end of the neck, and from nut to the 12th fret, unless he knows the scale length. From there, you can calculate the scale length and possibly figure out where the saddles would fall on the body. If this makes sense to you, then you can figure it out. If not, you need to do some searching on "Scale Length" and what that means to your project. A dinky is small like a shrinky dink.
  7. A Router is basically a Drill which is mounted to a mechanism that guages the depth and adds accuracy and precision to the depth and width of your cut. Find a woodshop or two and ask if they can give you a free lesson... on your project.
  8. Thanks, I found your post after reading this. However, reconstituted stone is not the look I'm going for. I want a natural look.
  9. I picked up some Custom Shop Parts Humbuckers - Classic PAF Style Guitar Pickups in Gold from an eBay auction. No mounting screws with mine either... but they did appear to be in a metal casing. Not height adjustable, since they are soldered into position and the metal casing restricts them. I don't have a jack for my project guitar yet, so the electronics aren't entirely hooked up to the mock-up to see how these sound... Since I can't really adjust the height, I was wondering if the slope of the humbuckers are supposed to slant toward the neck... I'm guessing that the higher end of the pickups should be near the tremolo and the lower end of each would be by the neck. Would that be correct? Usually you can adjust these things right up to the strings. They do certainly look great with the rest of my copper/gold hardware though. This guitar is all about looks anyway and I figured they would work this way when I bid on them.
  10. Are there any reasons I should not use Malachite or Azurite as a fretboard inlay? Is there any truth to these copper minerals being toxic when cut? Can anyone tell me where I can purchase enough for one fretboard, fairly cheap?
  11. Well, this is the forum to test out the board controls and get your feet wet, no? Why jump into the shallow end first? When the Freedom of Speech is challenged, I will be the first in line for a new way. Both Project Guitar Forums that I mentioned would be appropriate for works in progress... the only difference is that one description mentions posting pictures and one does not. Whereas, neither one actually allows a member to "post" pictures. *cough* Megadeth *cough* Forums *cough* Was that wrong? What isn't business oriented on the web? I mean, come on! Can I mention my guitar instructor or the business I take lessons at? Where do you draw the line here? Is my, uh... band... T-shirt offensive here? My "business" website uses a free host. So does my personal one. I don't think I can leech off of them. How many passwords do I need to have to add an image upload site to the list so that I can post images to forums? Should I get a new image host for each forum I post to? Wouldn't that be promoting an image host business, thereby breaking the rules? Do you know how many forums I belong to? I find it a bit remarkable that the sites who promote leeching don't allow it. Thanks for the red carpet though. Hope I haven't muddied it too much.
  12. The stud placement is really dependant upon the scale length. (Distance from nut to the saddle) Strats usually use 25 1/2" scale with Strat Trem bridge mounting holes (6) at 24 13/64" What you really need to do is know the scale length and find the appropriate position for the saddles and then find the stud placement. If you can't make a mock-up, making a template of the Wilkinson Trem and checking scale measurements would be the way to go.
  13. Hi all, I've been working on a guitar project. I've done three sketches, bought hardware, made a plywood mock-up, colored the sketches in photoshop and I'm currently looking at types of wood, inlay, truss rods, and decals. So, I decided to sign up and maybe post some specifics about my project later, in hopes to get more feedback than I've been getting on other forums... which I will decline to comment on since those would be connected to businesses. Odd forum signature rules around here. I've been on many forums but never saw anything that would not allow linking to my own website before... it's basically a portfolio of my artwork, but I am trying to get into selling some. *shrug* Therefore, my normal signature links are censored. Anyway, I was wondering if I should post progress on my guitar in the "solid body" forum or the "work in progress" forum. As I'm browsing, I found that a bit confusing. Especially if we're not allowed to upload photos. We're supposed to leech bandwidth from other sites to post photos here?
