    Hi everyone, I didn't find an answer to this question anywhere so I thought that I should ask before I begin. My guitar body is Basswood, I have Flamed Maple Veneer to put on the top, The body is completely sanded (I have to say that I think that the Heatgun tutorial work perfectly). Is my next step to attach the veneer top, or should I use the grain filler and sanding sealer process on the entire body before I put the top on it? I plan on staining the entire body, including the back, I know that the basswood is not the best looking wood for stain, but it's going to be a dark cherry and I don't think that it will matter as much. I understand that it may not matter which way that I do it, I would just like some opinions, Perhaps someone has experienced some problems in the past that I can avoid! Thx deshibs

    I really like the look of figured maple tops, so I would like to do a nice maple top, that's why I was considering the stain. deshibs

    Great, Thx.... I did a search also on Yahoo and didn't find much, I may have been looking the wrong direction though. I will check through the tutorials, I'm sure that I will need to apply an oil based Grain filler and Sand & Sealer to it before I use any dyes etc. Thx for the info. deshibs

    I have a 1990 Fender HM Strat sitting in my closet that I am thinking about refinishing, but I am not sure of the bodies wood type or how to find out, I have a feeling it's Alder, but I'm not sure. Anyway I can find out? deshibs

    Hi again, I have my Fender body sanded down to the wood, so far so good. I was thinking about the next steps that I want to take with it while sanding and one thought that I had was this; Since I am planning to use a flamed maple veneer on the top, would it be nice to use a binding around the edges ( hope that is the correct terminology ). What do you think Does everyone think it will work well and would it be a good idea to apply my stains to the body before binding it, that way I don't have to worry about the dye bleeding into the binding material. deshibs

    Thanks for the advice and the links for the supplies, I will begin removing the old finish today using the Heat gun method as explained in the tutorial, and I plan on using a Maple veneer on the top with a nice cherry stain, I have'nt decided if I should try to burst it or not, I will worry about that later, what I wanted to know now is what to do first, should I do the whole body before I put the veneer on, or should I put the veneer on first and then the stain. Litchfield mentioned staining the top black and sanding it back abit, I understand the reason for doing that, should I stain the back and sides with the black first also? The advbice is much appreciated and I will try to get pics for this guitar when it is finished to show everyone how I did with it! Thanks Deshibs

    I am new to this forum, but I have a question in regards to the Veneer Top projects, I want to try this on an old Srat body that I have, but what I haven't found is a tutorial on what type of Paint or Stain to use in order to get the PRS type finish, I want the Quilt to show through. I also would like to know if I should reduce the thickness of the body before I put the Veneer on it, I am concerned that with the added thickness, I may change the weight and feel of the body too much. Anyway.... Any help will be apprectiated. Thx deshibs
