  1. Resistances/impedances in series simply add, ie Xtotal = X1 + X2 +X3.... In parallel, the sum of the reciprocals is the reciprocal of the total, ie 1/Xtotal = 1/X1 + 1/X2 + 1/X3.... If you remember that, you can figure out any combination of speakers.

The series explanation above is correct. But the parallel explanation is wrong.

For parallel, the formula is R1 * R2 etc. divided by R1 + R2 etc.

So, for 2- 8 ohm speakers in parallel, you would have (8*8)/(8+8) for a total of 4 ohms.

Do a Google on Ohm's Law.

  2. I picked up an '86 LP custom for dirt cheap, $300. The guitar had been knocked off it's stand and the neck broke off at the pocket. That was a piece of cake to fix because it was a lousy glue joint and the break was really clean.

The problem is, because of the fall, the finish cracked like crazy. Imagine shattered glass that didn't come apart.

I need advice on stripping this guitar without ruining the binding. Does anyone know any techniques other than sanding the whole thing? Or should I just use chemicals and re-do the binding.

    Thanks.

  3. OK, maybe I should have said-

I watched the StewMac video "Spray Fininshing Basics" by Dan Erlewine and Don MacRostie. Don did a finish where he painted the colors without masking the binding. Then he scraped the binding and sanded just before the clear coats.

Or, to be more more vague but providing information -

Check out the StewMac video "Spray Fininshing Basics" by Dan Erlewine and Don MacRostie. The video shows a scraping technique that doesn't require taping.

  4. this is plain nonsense, even thought it might be done, you run the chance of scratching the binding... use the 1/4 or 1/8 tape used for pinstripping, the one must custom painters use to make flames or custom grafics, and cover the rest with painter paint, this is what I will do on my LP once I finish with the body work... don't rely on scraping the binding you may run the chance of messing it up... If you ain't got the knowledge don't reply NONSENSE stuff, please... If I was a complete NuB and I had followed that advise and scraped my binding beyond repair I would have been very ....... mad!

Sorry, I should have included more info.

I saw the technique of scraping on the StewMac video "Spray Fininshing Basics" by Dan Erlewine and Don MacRostie.

    So, it's not nonsense.

I've only built 4 guitars and none of them with binding, so maybe I shouldn't have said anything.

Anyway, check out the video, it's pretty good for beginner and intermediate finishing techniques.

  5. My pickup routing templates have the holes in the proper place so I can attach them with screws. Then the mounting rings screw into the existing holes.

As with anything else, PRACTICE ON SCRAP. You can practice a bunch of times on chunks of pine that only cost a few cents each. It's best to get your routing technique down on cheap wood before you mess up a guitar.

  6. I wasn't sure where to post this, so I picked the most active forum.

Feylya turned me on to this site yesterday, on another board.

Looks like a lot of good info here.

Hope I'll be able to contribute. If nothing else, I can pick the brains of people who really know what they're doing. :D
