  1. That's a 3rd Gen. J-Custom. They were not brought to the US, but you can order them from some shops in Japan (or contact Rich).

There are a couple of variations of the 'vine' inlay:

    - Regular Vine Inlay: We've seen this one on the JEMs that Vai plays.

    - Tree of Life (new): That's the one pictured above. It's a lot like the Vine, but....updated a little. More high-end Ibanez guitars are coming with this inlay.

    - Tree of Life (old): This one can be seen on some of the old Bob Weir models from Ibanez.

If you guys have questions about J-Customs, let me know. I have the largest collection of 1st. Gen. J-Customs on Earth (unless there's a new guy I haven't heard about. LOL). Be careful about posting J-Custom stuff on Jemsite; that got me suspended a couple of times.

    :D

  2. Hey Dani! Welcome to the Project Guitar.com Forum.

I hope you have a fun time here and learn as we all have. Don't forget to use the Search feature, because a lot of questions are already in threads.

BTW- I'm glad to see someone from Singapore online. I know that with the tsunami things have been tough lately. I hope the rest of the region recovers quickly.

    Enjoy the forum!

  3. I don't know the specifics of the hack job, but from what I gathered, it was a virus targeting PHPBB forums specifically. You'd have to check with someone who dealt directly with it for more info.

I'm not sure of Brian's backup schedule, but I do know that it's fairly regular. Not nightly, but it is backed up.

Don't worry. We've got ya covered as best we can.

    Thanks for your patience, folks.

    Enjoy!

  4. Hey all.

Well, it's been 24 hrs. without power.

    61F in the house.

I've found out our fireplace is pretty much just decorative.

I can hear the guitars screaming even when I sleep.

I'm running the laptop and the cable modem via a power inverter mounted in my truck. It looks kinda funny with big orange extension cords running thru the house, but.....it works. :D

I took some pics about 4AM of Rachel and I trying to save the juniper trees that line our driveway and patio, and then again at about 2PM of some of the rest of the neighborhood, including one of my neighbor, Chris, looking very philosophical. LOL It's been a pretty amazing holiday (I saw BLUE lightning this morning...wow), and it's only gonna get better- the high temp tomorrow is projected to be 10F!

    Here are the pics:

According to the power company website, we should have electricity sometime on Sunday. Good thing the truck's got a full tank of gas.

    B)

I know how you guys love irony, so here's a healthy dose:

I've called the city about a dozen times about street lights being burnt out on the two streets that our house is on. They've replaced them, but they seem to burnout every 2 mos. or so. (There's an obvious power issue here, but that's another rant).

As I look out the front door right now, I see that the street light is on.

    :D

  5. Hey folks.

In the wake of recent events on a few forums around the 'net getting hacked into and tons of info being corrupted on those sites, I contacted Brian and we're going to get the entire forum and site backed up as well perform an update to the latest version of the Invision software for the forum.

This *might* cause the site or forum to be unavailable for an hour or so. We apologize in advance for that time loss, but rest assured, it's for the best. When the backups and updates are complete, we will post here to let you know.

Note: The recent hacks have been against PHPBB boards and NOT Invision boards (like what we run here). While we're confident in the security, it's better to be safe than sorry, esp. with the amount of incredibly useful information here.

Thanks for your patience, and thanks for being a member!

  6. yay, after using the handy handy search function i have found my thread (which was moved without warning)
Because you posted in the wrong topic area.

"Announcments & Test Area" is for test posts and/or introductions.

"Solidbody Guitar & Bass Chat" is for....well, you know....not test posts or introductions.

Post in the appropriate topic area, and things don't have to be moved.

Less work for us, and less work for you. It's win-win.

    Thanks. Enjoy the forum.

  7. Heh heh....I wasn't actually suggesting purchasing a ZX; just letting you know that PARTS of them are kinda cool....and could be incorporated into a project (such as the FX unit section).

    :D

Here's one of the retractable headsets I had in mind:

    http://www.gothandsfree.com/Cellular-Acces...ne-T-Style.html

....and here's one more (a bit more expensive):

    http://www.gothandsfree.com/Cellular-Acces...ne-T-Style.html

If so desired, you could replace the cord/mono bud that comes with those units, with a regular stereo ear bud set. Countersink the entire thing into the top edge of the guitar (up by the top horn?), with a slide-away door for access/storage....could be cool.

  8. As others have pointed out, a drill press is does not make a good router.

It's the same way a router makes a crappy drill press. :D

The Dremel setup is a great one, esp. for fine and detail work. For larger projects (entire bodies, whole necks, etc), you'll be grateful to have a router. Plunge routers are nice, but a fixed base one will get the jobs done as well.

I scored a great setup from Craftsman a while back: Plunge router + router table for $99. There are sales happening all the time. Keep checking and I'm sure you'll find some good deals.

  9. What about using headphones instead? Too much of a hassle with the cords? It would save you some space issues and routing.

Why mess with wires at all?

    Score a Bluetooth setup.

Ok, ok...those can get a little pricey, and wiring it up would probably be zero fun.

How about a retractable headphone set? Just a set of ear buds that 'unroll' out of an edge of the guitar. When you're done, just give them a little tug, and the spring-loaded winder pulls them back in. You could also have a safety catch on the edge/point of entry so when you're movin' your head around, you don't accidentally engage the winder. :-)

Just some ideas. I can't wait to see the progress.

BTW- those Fernandes ZX guitars are supposedly very cool. The built-in FX ones can get some decent tones from what I've heard from people. You probably won't record a Top10 single with one, but....for kickin' around by the couch...

  10. I've seen picture of an electric guitar whose neck was a tube.  The "frets" were metal plates along the tube, radiused on the string side.  It didn't look very comfortable, but, who knows.  Having mostly air between the frets is like an extreme form of scalloping.
    I think you're referring to the Gittler's.

Andy Summers used them in a couple of Police vids way back in the day.

  11. Hey, I'm all for experimenting, but there is one thing to keep in mind, if it was a fantastic idea, why hasn't it been done before? the technology materials and machines have all been around for years.  Metal necks and fretboards have been done in the past but never amounted to anything.
Well, unless you count the Kramer basses with the alum. necks that they sold truckloads of.

Or the very popular, well-reviewed Vigier Surfretter.

    :D

  12. Another quick update:

-Added a pic for Jon Finn.

If you guys get the chance to see him, either with his band or Boston Pops, I *highly* recommend it. Not only is he a top-notch player, but he's one of the nicest players I've ever met. His band does the occassional gig in the Boston area. Definitely worth a cover charge.

    -Licensing:

I've been doing rapid emails with the company in Japan the past few days. We're still working out some details. As soon as I know anything more, I'll let you guys know.

    Thanks everyone!

  13. Drak- I'm with you, man. "This guitar was the one Lennon played XXXXXXXX on? Great. Ever think about tuning it in the last 30 years?".

    :D

I had the fortune of being able to play a '56 Strat this weekend. Sure, it's a very rare piece of nostalgia, and it sounds very 'vintagey', but in all honesty, it plays much like my $150 super-store Strat. It'd be cool to own, but I'd only use it for measurements. LOL Sad, eh?

Moreau- Carl Thompson builds a helluva bass. I first got into his designs after learning of Primus' Les Claypool playing one and mentioning how he liked to masturbate while thinking about his CT bass. So, I guess it's porn to Les as well. LOL

I'm not sure I'd call it "legendary" in the common sense of the word. Guitars like EVH's Frankenstein, Lucille and 'Brownie'/'Blackie' are more mainstream legendary. But from a luthier's standpoint, I think most here would agree that Carl is a deserved legendary luthier.

If you've got the cash, and really really want one, go for it.

To you, it's 'value' will never change.
