    There's no excuse for insulting someone.  ESPECIALLY if you're a moderator and have the ability to ban someone because you see fit.

    In fact, you were rude to Sobot as well when he posted a poll in the in progress section.  All you had to do was tell him you were moving it to a proper place.  You didn't have to add that it was a useless poll and tell him to make up his own mind.

    I also don't buy into letting people be rude because "that's just the way he is".  Everyone is entitled to common courtesy.  If you can't be, you should give up your moderator status.

    You should just apologize for what you did and be done with it.

    Just in case you missed it the first time.

    Sign up and you'll only get one email from me (ever) when Tremol-No units are ready to be purchased by the public. The email will only have a link to the AllParts page where they can be ordered online, and their 800 number.

    Those signing up will be first in line (so to speak) for Tremol-No units. They'll know of availability before the main site is even updated!

    And I swear the email list will get archived on CD, far away from any spammers. :D

    It's at least nice to see you guys know the pic posting rules. :D

    Sorry, but I don't think I have any pics from the show. I don't cruise around with a camera at the NAMM shows (someone might confuse me with Rich Harris. LOL) There are PLENTY of other people running around taking shots though. I'm sure there are some online already.

    I know there's a funny one coming of Ed DeGenaro (THD) and I, but I don't think it's up yet. It's a spoof on how tall Ed really is. I'll put up a link as soon as I get one from the guy who took the pic.

    Well folks, I just got back from Indy. Nice town. Not exactly known as a "music mecca", but....we certainly heard some crazy playing. :-)

    Some highlights of the show for me were:

    - The new Thermion amp from Ibanez.

    Yes, I know. I just used a technical term regarding tubes and the name "Ibanez" in the same sentence. They did their homework on this one. If you're looking for another option besides the typical Mesa or Marshall head & cab setups, this one is really worth a look. It's MSRP is about $1500 for the head (I don't remember the price on the cabs, but it was comparable). DO NOT expect Bogner/Dumble/Komet-type sound from this amp. It's a fifteen HUNDRED dollar amp (not fifteen THOUSAND). I would call it "simple tone transportation". BTW- the light on the front of the amp can be turned on & off, and you can change the color of the LED's as well. Cosmetic, but a nice touch.

    - The Crate "Monoblock".

    Tiny, tiny amp thingy, good tone, VERY nice pricetag- around $250-300. I would call this a "pocket amp". It's basic and straightforward, but can produce some nice tones. One guy said that he'd buy one and keep it in the emergency kit of his car. :-)

    - Digitech "JamMan" delay/sampling pedal.

    I only read about this in the daily NAMM magazine, but the specs looked kinda cool. 6.5 *hours* of phrase capabilities (with the optional big memory card). Yes- I said hours. For jamming or practice, this might be neat to work with. A short-term recorder.

    - THD Electronics new 4x12 cab.

    THD didn't want to do the same old 4x12; there's enough of those out there for folks to choose from. They took the basic 4x12 shape, and did some tweaking to it. There are tuned "dispersers" in front of the speaker cones that are tuned specific to the cab. In combination with their tried and true Flexi-50 amp, it made for a nice combination. Yes- I'm friends with the folks at THD, but the new cab really impressed me. It's nice to see folks pushing the envelope.

    - Framus Guitars & Amps.

    I hadn't had a chance to play a Framus guitar, or any of their amps...until now. The Ruby Riot and Dragon amps (super-pricey, starting at about $3200) sure do sound nice. The new Ruby Riot has a tremolo section as well. These are the kind of amps you dream about- simple, 2 or 3 channel, nice power, GREAT tone (from any instrument), and they look cool as hell.

    While at the Framus booth we got to talking gear (really? At a NAMM show? That's odd.). The guys were curious about the Tremol-No, and asked if I would install a unit in one of their new chambered Diablo's with a Wilkinson. Ummm...sure! I didn't do the ground wire, because it's not my $3000 guitar to do that to (LOL), but everything else went in without a hitch. The guys liked that it could become a hardtail and go back to full trem in 2 seconds. I left the unit in the Diablo so they could play around with it more after the show.

    Very nice guys at Framus, and they build VERY nice gear.

    As usual, there was the regular assortment of AMAZING builders- Nik Huber, Warrior, etc., and a guy doing full-body molds and turning them into guitars. I've got a few ideas for that one. LMAO Oh, and for the bass heads out there, Jens Ritter showed off some of his awesome work. Both Nik and Jens had dealers pick up *all* of their guitars the very first day of the show. I think that says it all.

    All the post-show activities will need to be discussed on an adults-only forum (heh heh), but needless to say we had a great time our entire stay in Indy.

    I think what this forums needs more than people attacking the mod crew or regulars, is a dose of real-world forums.

    Next time, ask for a eye. Why? Because neither is going to happen.

    Attacking any member, mod, or admin on this site will result in an immediate suspension without warning. That's right folks- no more PMs. You're just plain gone.

    In all reality, though this is a wonderful forum that does tons for a whole load of people, there are other forums out there that are enormous and have an incredible size when it comes to members. One of the online games I play, Kingdom of Loathing, is an example of a forum that is mighty.

    What, exactly, is your defintion of 'mighty'? The ability to post saying "Your momma's so fat, the back of her neck looks like a pack of franks."? Bad news; that's not mighty. It's 4th grade.

    It's relatively small, but the moderating staff has their work cut out for them. Flaming is not only allowed, but typically praised and laughed at. Post Count ++ is not a bad thing. The forumers have a section just for flaming (The Ring of Flame), and drag everything from there around the rest of the forum. If you think people here are being mean to you, try going there, not searching, posting a topic with impropar grammar/spelling, and actually expecting an answer. More than likely, your thread will be locked after 10-15 posts ridiculing you and your mother.

    Trust me- you don't want this here. The Slam Thread is archived for a reason. The real reason being that I was disgusted by all the amateur action happening in there. If you have doubts as to my ferocity, ask Brian, or any old-school Jemsiter.

    (Does anyone else find it insanely ironic that someone coming from a gamers forum says that a guitar-building forum needs a dose of the 'real world'?)

    I hate to say it, but the way this forum is set up is amazing candy-coated and family friendly when it compares to the rest of the internet. If you feel offended here, you should probably just unplug your computer from the internet and learn how to play RPG's from now on...

    Candy-coated? Hmmm...that's a bit of a stretch.

    Telling people to unplug their computer is just plain bad advice. Not everyone gets online to game or build guitars or check out p0rn.

    It's not that this is a bad thing, though. I love this forum, and have been here for quite some time now. Though I had a brief period of inactivity, I was still here, lurking, reading, and viewing. The people here are very nice, don't flame, and the mod crew runs very easy on newbs and n00bs alike.

    I think there's a compliment in there somewhere, so....thanks!

    The lack of the search button is a thing that very few know an answer to if anyone. That runs along the same lines as the "edit" button. You don't need another post. Especially if it's within 5-10 minutes of when you originally posted something, and isn't some sort of ground-breaking idea that you HAVE to get out RIGHT AWAY in order to tell the whole world, AND you don't want to lose or add to what you originally wrote.

    That's what's called "Flood Control". It's been addressed here before, and hasn't been an issue since.

    The Search problem will continue until people learn exactly what that magic button is for. Thankfully, the more that learn, the more that will pass that wonderful information along to others.

    All in all, though there is this "perfect" forum we all want, we aren't going to get it. There will always be someone here to make us not like them. There will always be spelling mistakes, flames, people asking if they can take down their door and build a guitar out of it, etc. It should be understood and accepted as part of the foruming world, and handled accordingly from case to case.

    And on this forum, it is handled case-by-case. And will continue to be done as such.

    What you're asking for won't happen here. Not because I won't allow it, but because the SITE OWNER won't allow it. He didn't start this to be a sewer. McDonalds didn't start to be a trucking company. That's how the world works. You hang with whomever you desire, and I will do the same. Don't push your stuff on me, and I won't push my stuff on you. Didn't Hannibal cover this about 2500 years ago?

    If you want to run that kind of forum, go for it. There are plenty of names available, free software, and hundreds of hosting companies.

    CerealK is still a Moderator here, and will continue to be one. He's not as visible as the rest of us, but then again...none of us have emigrated to a new country in the last year- let alone a new hemisphere (29C on Christmas day? LOL).

    Simon is also a doctor. Yes- a real, live doctor. As in a buttload of schooling. He's currently working on brain diseases and degerative eye disorders. While working on guitars isn't brain surgery to us, it sort of is for him.

    Eddie- good to see you back here! Your suggestion was a common one among the people I tossed the link to. I have since updated the Players2 page. There is now a single row of text-only at the top, then all the pics, then a single row of text-only at the bottom.

    There's just something so very wrong about putting Steve Blucher at the bottom of *any* list.

    BigD- Right now, those are for the guys testing out the units that have sent me pics and quotes. In the future, I might do a "Gallery Of Owners"...maybe with some weekly/monthly contest for a shirt/hat/something. We'll see.

    Hmmm...for a Bigsby, eh? Maybe after Gibson calls me up. :-)

    Thought I'd let you folks know that Tremol-No.com has been updated with all new CAD pics. These are what the production units will look like. No major changes, but you'll see more arcuation on the claw hooks, and some rounded corners to make it a little sleeker/harder to build. (LOL) The bright, pretty colors are gone from the main pics, but the Parts image has some purple, bronze and red.

    I'm working on the Players page. Let me know what you guys think about this so far:

    The two bannings you see in this thread are accounts setup by a previously banned member. The accounts have since been deleted.

    I might have to redo this poll after the trash has been taken out, so to speak.

    I'm fairly sure that of those 8 votes, most of them come from the UK, and a couple of others are funny-haha jokers having fun.

    I'm with ya, Drak. Though the milk/cookies line is a bit harsh, I'd rather have that as opposed to "blood/guts".

    So you folks know, there are over 4000 members, with about 65% of those being active within the last year. Some folks sign up just to get emailed posts from specific threads, and never post anything. That's not really active, but they do count as a member.

    As far as visitors go, PG.com gets tens of thousands of hits a month (Brian has the exact numbers). Some of that is you and me, some are Google searches, but it's still a good chunk of change/bandwidth.

    Sorry for the delay folks...had a little Jemfest thing to do. :-)

    Let's get some of the questions answered...

    Could the Tremol-no be adapted to work with a bass tremolo?

    Honestly, I'm not sure. I didn't do any testing on any bass trems. If bass tremolo systems utilize the same claw-&-spring setup as normal trems, then I think it would work fine. You might need to change out the thumbscrews to set screws. If I get a chance, I'll try it out on one. Anyone have Randy Coven's email address?

    AllParts is doing the distribution of the Tremol-No. That means that wherever you buy AllParts parts, you can pick up or order a Tremol-No. This includes all the GC and SA stores, regular dealers, and online.

    Yep- they're going to the distributors overseas as well (UK, Japan, etc.). They will be available worldwide.

    Congratulations again Kevan, it's just awsome this worked out for you.  So whats the deal with the ibanez one?  I know the classic is out, do you have any time frame for the release of the other? Or will it depend on the success of the classic?  Which will no doubt be a huge hit!  Built for guitarists by guitarists!  That means we'll all like it. Nice clean up btw.         Jason

    Jason- you're exactly right. The manuf/distro of the Standard depends on the success of the Classic. I also have a few other 'proprietary' tailpieces for some other trem blocks, including some of the kookier ones. I'll keep you guys updated as to what's happening with the alternate tailpieces.

    Ultimately, I feel the important thing here is the design - the engineering and the ultimate simplicity.  It's not a new idea and attempts have been made to crack the problem before.

    The best design will dominate the market.  Given Kev already has AllParts behind him - he'll get some amazing exposure, probably more than he would had Stewmac taken up his idea.

    I've actually had a couple of forum converstaions and emails with Marcel (the inventor). He's a decent guy, and I look forward to meeting him one day.

    We went two different routes when it comes to bringing a product to market: I chose licensing, while he chose to produce them himself and get a simple distro deal. No biggie. Both ways work, but I think licensing opens up a much broader scope initially, esp. when it comes to a brand new product that no one has seen before. It certainly helps that AllParts is #1 or 2 in the world when it comes to parts distro. :D

    Besides, StewMac never returned my call (back in 2003).

    I checked out Marcel's little gadget. It's made VERY nicely- good metals, great machining, but...in the end....it's a glorified TremSetter that requires you to drill into your guitar. Also, Marcel's unit is spring loaded, so it will mess with the feel of your trem.

    I didn't even install mine. The pseudo-English instructions were just too....umm..Dutch for me.

    It's nothing against Marcel. He's a nice guy, and it's cool to see him trying. I personally think he over-complicated the device, thus making it very hard to install (requires a qualified tech because you have to drill into the trem block), and fairly difficult to operate.

    Anybody see this yet?

    Though it's not about licensing, I'll break the rules and get you guys an update:

    Tonight I'm working on a script/layout for the Tremol-No demonstration and instructional videos. They will be available for download in the Support section of the site. For $5, you can get them delivered to your door on a DVD.

    Rob Keeler and I will be shooting the videos the day after SummerNAMM (aka- The Show No One Is Going To, So Let's Drink A Lot!). I'll get them edited and up on the site before units hit the shelves.

  24. Cold Heat

    The Cold Heat is cool, but I still keep my bigboy soldering iron around. Why? Well, for large pools of solder (like those found on trem claws), the Cold Heat just doesn't have enough juice to get them liquid.

    For small soldering jobs, like very fine wires (i.e. piezo leads), and attaching pickup wires to selector switches (i.e. the Ibanez OTAX switch), the Cold Heat is great. No more burned fingertips! WooHoo! The cordless aspect is VERY, VERY cool.

    The tips DO break, but....they can be filed back into shape. Just be real careful when you do that, or they'll just crumble further.

    I think the most important thing to remember is that the Cold Heat works differently than what we're all used to when it comes to soldering technique. You have to learn a new technique when using it. It's not bad; it's just a slight learning curve.

    In more than a year with a couple of ColdHeat irons, I'm pretty content with mine. I'm on my 2nd one now. (I gave one to Cradle Of Filth's tech as a present after watching him struggle with connection after connection and cord after cord with an ancient butane torch that he had to refill every 2 minutes).

    Franks suggestion of having one as an emergency iron is a good idea.

    Just remember: It's a $20 soldering iron. While it's cool (no pun intended), it's not really made for heavy duty jobs.

    With any luck, they'll come out with a Super Cold Heat that *can* do larger wires and pools of solder. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

    (After re-reading the entire thread, it seems that folks before me have pretty much posted exactly what I did. Boy...now I feel silly. Redundancy....ugh....sorry)
