  1. It's looking good but one thing is bugging me.

The back of the neck isint the same thickness all the way down it. What I'm talking about is in this picture. In my opinion the neck will be much more comfterable if you took down the area by the heel so the neck is same thickness along the entire surface.

thanks for the advice..I'll probably do that..

i mean from the nut, to where the neck finishes.

Don't mean to hijack the thread but...

Grommit, it's time to hit the books...have you been to the main Project Guitar site? Start your reading there, lots of tutorials and info for you...and try to pick up a copy of the Melvyn Hickock book. This is a very basic question you're asking. Then start searching the forums using plenty of keywords. Spend a few weeks reading up on this.

Aidlook--I'm really enjoying this thread, great work so far...

Thankx Mickguard...always nice to hear people enjoy what you're posting...

Got some fretwire yesterday..and this is how it turned out.

This is the last post from you that I EDIT!!! You did well on the 1st page, what happened, got picture happy!

  2. hey man, nice guitar your building there.

im thinking of doing something similar. and i have a few questions.

when you routed out the chambers, did you just go around the outside of it, or did you route all the wood?(probably a stupid question)

and secondly, how long does the neck extend from the nut onwards?

With the neck do you mean the fingerboard or the entire neck including tenon and stuff..

You could just rout around the outside obviously..but since it's cut all the way thru you could do it with a jigsaw...

    here's a new progress picture..

  3. wouldn't hollowing out the polepieces change the direction of the magnetic field in some way?

I don't think it would do that, but it would change the characteristics of the fields somehow. Whether that is good bad or indifferent, I have no idea. Since it's a humbucker, I think it can handle a small reduction in the output. If it were a single coil, I would think that it would cause serious problems with dropout on string bending and that sort of thing. :D

Yep that's what I meant..change the caracteristics...Will you lose a lot of output though?..because your not really recucing the size of the actual magnet...

Got the neck joint finished today...it's hanging there without any glue or screws.. :D

Now It's on to getting some fretwire and attaching the fretboard...fixing the headstock shape of wich I'm not yet shute...might go with an old Hagström style headstock...and oh, gotta find some wood for the front and back...

  5. Ahh mate!

mega looking very good! still curious to see what your going to use, i know it sounds odd but have you thought of a jazzmaster / fender jag trem. very similar slightly different.

Could be an option but well done shes looking good! mines nearly finished too!

Yep I've seen those...Was thiniking of the possibilities of modifiyng one of those..but I realized that I never use a trem anyway...I'm gonna make a string thru and put the strings where the rout for the trem cavity would be...so if I change my mind later I can put a trem on it.

  6. Its been a quite since i been here !!

and finally another red special builder THANK GOD!

oh well heres mine the 2nd one!

I will add some links later for you for more pics......

    Sweet...

Where do you get your hardware? I saw a trem + bridge on a site for €800...I could get a Fender USA strat for that price....Is there any cheaper ones or do I have to make them myself?

  7. Looks cool!  Nice work in Solid Works (right?).  I envy your ability, I tried and tried to creat a neck but didn't have much luck.

Yep Solid Works...I'm pretty much self thaught..

Was a long time ago since i did the neck..but I just got the dimensions of the JEM neck from the Ibanez website...

One thing I agree with on a couple of comments - the body of the guitar is fairly symetric, so that symetry ought to be reflected in the headstock as well. Looks to me that the top curve from away from the nut is a less severe than the lower curve going away from the nut, so it just doesn't jibe with my senese of gestalt. Know what I mean, Vern?

Yep...the headstock is just something from another design I threw on there so it looked complete...definately gonna change that....good pointers though... Thanx

  8. The carving near the bottom is quite elegant, but the horns and waist could use some work.  As duo said, the waist could be staggered (offset), and I think the horns could be a bit less symmetrical.. perhaps the lower one should be bigger?  Just a thought.. play around with it until YOU like it the most.  Also, as you asked if anything needed to be changed for it to play well, that usually depends on the neck, nut, and bridge configurations, rather than shape, unless you're talking about how it would balance or play sitting down.  In either case I think it would perform rather well.  Good job.

When I started to design it the first thing I wanted was symmetrical horns and waist, so I don't think I'll change that. The neck dimensions are the ones of a jem neck so I suppose that it would play well. I think the body is quite thin at the moment. Are any specific woods good if you want to make a thinner body?
