  1. a cabinetry shop is a good idea. I'll look into that. I have access to a planer so that is not big deal. Its the getting it into two pieces that will be harder.
  2. Yeah I am acounting for the wood removed by the saw. Each piece can be a little under and inch or one piece can be an inch and one piece less. As for what I'm doing with it, It will be the front of a guitar. The back will be mahogany. Purpleheart/mahogany body Maple neck Purpleheart fretboard Multi scale length
  3. theoretically could it be run along a table saw on all sides then saw through the middle by hand? Then to make to sawed side flat, run through a planner? This would obviously be an enormous amount of work but I think it could be done. And if worst comes to worst then I suppose half could be planed off to make just one pice 1 inch thck.
  4. Ok say I have a piece of purple heart that is 20X15X2 inches and I want to make it two pieces that are each 20X15X1 inch. What would be the best way to got about doing this?
  5. yep, its purple heart Tyhe neck was sent to me from a guy in New Jersey who this november I will be building a fanned fret guitar for. He bought it off ebay and didn't like it so he gave it to me. The wear marks were on there when he got it. It says fender on the headstock but its obviously handmade, and not ver well at that. Someone went to great lengths to decieve their customers on ebay.
  6. Does anyone have a little test guitar that they try things on? I have this squier, it was my first guitar, which I just try random things on to se how it works and if I can do it. I thought I would post a pic for a good laugh. Its hideous but I love it. 10 points for anyone who can tell me what kind of wood its sitting on. here is a current pic here are links to its various stages. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v282/chr...109/monkey2.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v282/chrisb0109/knobs1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v282/chrisb0109/1white.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v282/chrisb0109/a.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v282/chr...9/Finished1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v282/chrisb0109/First2.jpg
  7. if it is a moisture problem, is that fixable? Could the cloudyness be buffed out?
  8. After putting on my firt coat of nitro which was actually a sanding sealer, it has formed a few cloudy white spots. This same thing happened on the crapo piece I tested it on and came out with a little rubbing from a jewelry polishing cloth. What is causing this so that I can avoid it in the future?
  9. about how much area does one kit of that leafing cover?
  10. Is there any online site besides novax that seel individual string bridges? The novax ones are a little pricy.
  11. I have to say that although I am drawn to beatiful instruments I find it more enjoyable to plau ugly ones. Its kind of like "look what I can make this piece of crap sound like." It seems like more of an accomplishment to make an ugly instrument sound and play very well.
  12. I'm really not trying to argue. I think its as stupid as you do but I simply do not understand how a warmoth bolt on would indicate a strat style bridge. I'm not trying to show off. I am still learning quite a bit but when I explained the neck angle thing he had not yet specified what bridge he wanted.
  13. I'm not arguing with you. I have no doubt that you know how to do it. I am not explaining it to you. I'm explaining it to him. I don't want him to be discouraged from using a TOM because he thinks the neck angle would be too much to handle. I fail to see your point on this one. You can certainly use a warmoth neck for a TOM bridge. the neck itslef has nothing to do with it. Its the neck pocket that is angled.
  14. as said in the above post, headstock angle is simply personal preference. As for building a neck, I found that to be easier than building the body. I don't know why but I felt much more under control while building the neck. If you want a tune o matic bridge then you will need either a neck angle, or you can reccess the bridge into the body. Contrary to what has been said above, a neck nagle can be done just fine on a bolt on and is done all of the time.
  15. I am trying to find a 7 way pickup switch. I have heard that the Dano MOD 6 had one as well as some 3 humbucker guitars. However I haven't even been able to confirm that "fact". Is there any place that sells such a switch?
  16. I searched for turboCAD and it costs money which I don't have. Thanks anyway though. Out of the ones on that list which do you think would be the most useful and user friendly?
  17. I would like to ba able to design guitars on a CAD program. Would any of these free downloads work for ameteur use? http://www.freecad.com/cgi-bin/dcd/html/CA...eneral_Purpose/ If not are there any free downloads that would work? I know nothing about this but would like to learn.
  18. yep ytou either need to angle the neck pocket or recess the tom.
  19. You care more about the shape and looks than the sound? Doesn't that defeat the purpose?
  20. Ok so say this guitar is going to be tunned to C A D G B e. will a scale of 24.5 on the high side and 25 and 21/32 on the low side would this work?
  21. Does anyone know the scale length used for the High and low e of novax fanned fret guitars? Also what would be the best way of cutting the fret slots for such a design?
  22. wow. Just wow. what a lucky kid. Not just because he got a great guitar but because hehad such a great learning experience in making one. I would love to have such an oppurtunity.
  23. so say a piece of wood is saif to be 2 board feet. How do I know the exact dimmensions?
  24. TThis may seem like a stupid question to professionals but what is a board foot? Most of the sites I would like to get wood from sell by board feet. For instance what does 8/4 mean or 4/4?
