  1. Thanks for the reply. I probably sprayed a total of 12 coats on each body in one day, 1/2 hour apart. After thinking about it I believe I mixed it 3 poly and 1 thinner. Thanks for the naphtha tip as well, I would never have known....in fact I wonder if the surface may have been compromised with some body oils owing to the locations of the sand throughs, near the edge on both. I used a flat piece of tumbled marble as a sanding block.and never even got into the 1/8" round over. On my first build I used Minwax poly shake cans, same procedure, maybe a couple of more coats, and wet sanded from 400 to 1200 one step at a time and it turned out pretty nice for a first time IMHO. I never went through the paint so I think I'll be alright. What would the best ratio be to thin this poly using a cheap 1 stage turbine. Thanks for any information. Steve
  2. I have two tele bodies I've painted and sprayed with minwax poly. Multiple coats with the color (rattle cans) , with two weeks of dry time, after that I sprayed with the minwax. Four parts poly to one part thinner. I recoated lightly in never less than 30 minutes, and made sure it was dry to the touch. Three weeks dry time for the poly. Not optimum conditions, but better than average for spraying. I started wet sanding with 400 and knocked the big stuff down, then went to 600 and that's when I saw I had sanded through and stopped. I would like to know what I did to cause this. I suspect i did not wait long enough between coats, or perhaps not enough product (poly). Could I scuff the finish and apply more poly and still have a decent looking finish on these bodies? Any suggestions or advice is greatly appreciated. Steve
  3. My own opinion would be for you to take a basic woodworking class through your local community college or university or whatever you have available in your area. Power tools associated with woodworking can do significant damage to soft tissue in a nanosecond. Since you say you are pretty much new to woodworking this is where I would suggest you start. Just my $.02 Steve
  4. Wood magazine reviewed band saws under $550 in the current issue. I got a bench top delta and it's been a PITA to use. Get a 14 if you have the money, you'll be glad you did later. Steve
  5. Maybe try this place http://www.guitarforbeginners.com/forum/ Steve
  6. We answered his question, the answer was "no, that neck won't work either." I'm sorry.....maybe you could just point me to that post in this thread....I just don't see it. Steve
  7. I'm interested anderekel......but I still would like to where i could get a bolt on 24.5 over the counter for a tele. no one has really answered the op's oq. Steve
  8. Hi Andrew, I used minwax poly on my first build and it turned out pretty nice. follow the directions on the can. I used 7 cans and waited 30 mins. between coats it ended up with 16 coats. Light coats is the key imho. I suspect you meant light when you said "if the coats are thin enough". And yes you do want the body smooth. All the prep work will pay off when you sand the clear coat. Don't rush. Hope this helps some. Steve
  9. Especially #3. I'm wanting to build my first neck, and I've read that section six or eight times trying to get my head around it. Now I'm about to the point to begin. It is a great book anyone wanting to build a guitar should read. My $0.02 Steve
  10. +1 on what orqmorq says, the grain looks quite nice to me. Steve
  11. It's hard for me to tell. Can you get a shot of the edge, or the end grain? Steve
  12. You can achieve the desired result by drilling a .250" hole from the neck pocket through the neck pup route to the control cavity. You'll need a long bit and a little bit of angle on the bit. That's how I did mine. Steve
  13. Hello all, I have one build behind me that turned out pretty nice. I used TransTint amber dye in denatured alcohol to color the wood, it was pretty yellow and I sanded it back to achieve the color I was looking for. Now I want to know if I can add the dye to the lacquer or polly. I am trying to achieve a deep transparent colored finish. any help or information is greatly appreciated. Steve
  14. I built this one, it's pretty nice http://woodstore.net/benrouttab1.html I bought a Jessem plate for it In hindsight I wish I had made it a little bit larger. Steve
  15. Hi crash6882, I don't really have an answer to your question but would like to tell you that on my first build I used six cans of Minwax spray poly and ended up with 18 coats in one day waiting 30 minutes between coats. These were light coats, and the end result turned out pretty nice I think. The finish is prolly the very last place I would want to rush things IMHO. Steve
  16. you can find a tele plan here; http://www.tdpri.com/forum/telecaster-disc...-blueprint.html It has all the dimensions on it. Get the most recent one though. When I built my tele I got a set of templates from Ron Kirn for $57.00 Plus 12 shipping Hope this helps you out. Steve

  18. Isn't there bushings available for that problem? Or am I wrong...I thought there were. Steve
  19. It looks really nice. Do you just cut a taper on the TS or use a router with a template?
  20. I'd like to see some pics too...I'm very close to taking the leap to making a neck and am looking for any information. Steve
  21. Yeah it did. That looks very nice!! Steve
  22. Hi pschile, I'm not getting anything with that addy. You need to LEFT click on the image code and a small yellow box will appear that says "copied" then just paste it into your post. Here's a link for the full tutorial at photobucket; http://tutorials.photobucket.com/tutorial_150.html Steve

  24. New guy here, my name is Steve, I'm in DeKalb IL. I've been woodworking for quite a few years. I just finished my first guitar build(a tele) and think I'm totally hooked. I've been hanging here a little and it looks like a great place to learn more. I just wanted to introduce myself and say hi. Steve
